Chapter 9 of 10

Looting the Singularity

1.1k words

The universe… reclaims its silence! This realm… shall be undone!” The ripping sound intensified, an astral shredding. Dragoš’s grin faltered, replaced by a look of focused urgency. His gaze, for the first time, held a sliver of genuine alarm as he watched the sky tear open. He gripped the GM Access Token, its cool surface unyielding against his palm. His blue interface, flashing red, presented a grim choice while the Developers’ Room remained agonizingly out of reach. He could use the token now. He knew what it did. He could log out. Save himself. Leave this dying world behind. Or he could attempt the unthinkable, the insane risk that might just… maybe… save everyone. He stared at the entity, at the swirling vortex that was its core, and then at the small, glowing artifact in his hand. Could he plug the GM Access Token directly into the avatar's singularity core? Danica watched him as red flashes from the heavens stained his cheekbones. The shifting titan of impossible geometry flexed its shadowy limbs, its center a churning abyss that bent the air into broken planes. Dragoš scowled at the rift. “No way I’m letting the devs pull an unscheduled hotfix on *my* playtime,” he muttered, more to himself than to them. “Especially not with this much rare loot still on the table.” He made his choice. His eyes gleamed with renewed, manic resolve. “Alright, big fella. Let’s see what happens when you glitch a boss with GM permissions.” He didn't move. Instead, the multiple, vibrating Dragoš models, a shimmering crimson haze around him from the 'Suspicious Red Potion', flickered. One ghost-image detached, then another, and another, until half a dozen identical Dragoš figures, each a fraction of a second out of sync, surrounded the avatar. They didn’t attack with weapons. They attacked with a flurry of rapid-fire, open-handed slaps. *WHAP! WHAP! WHAP-WHAP-WHAP!* The sound echoed like a ludicrous drum solo in the apocalyptic chamber. The duplicates moved with physics-defying speed, each striking a different part of the entity's shadowy form. One slapped its knee. Another, its elbow. A third, its multi-faceted head. The monstrous entity, in the midst of its world-ending chant, faltered. Its arms twitched erratically, its form shuddered. The tearing sky above, for a breath, seemed to pause. [TARGET: MALAKOR (SINGULARITY AVATAR) – STUNNED!] [DEBUFF: HUMILIATED (MAJOR)] [STATUS: APOCALYPTIC ATTACK ANIMATION INTERRUPTED!] The harbinger of astral erasure let out a high-pitched, indignant shriek. It was less a cry of pain and more a profound affront to its very being. The slaps weren't dealing damage; they were disrupting its focus, its *reality*. Dragoš, the original, stood still, watching his glitching army work. “See?” he called out, a triumphant grin splitting his face. “Optimal crowd control! Never underestimate the power of rapid-fire character model collision exploits!” Danica stared, utterly bewildered. The towering horror, which had brought gods to their knees and empires to ash, was flailing like a child caught raiding the cookie jar, baffled by the sheer audacity of being *slapped*. Strahinja, however, understood. A new, terrifying light entered his eyes. “His will… defies the grand order,” he rasped. The grumpy purple squid, hovering beside his temple, throbbed with a dull, violet glow. It was no longer merely a pet; it was a companion in eldritch power. “The core… is vulnerable!” Strahinja roared, stepping forward. His hands, no longer bound by mortal flesh, began to glow with a deep, obsidian luminescence. The squid, mirroring his movements, extended tendrils of shadowy energy, weaving them with Strahinja’s own. The air between them shimmered, distorting, then *fracturing*. A tear opened across the titan's chest, exposing the churning pit within. Tendrils of violet light gripped the edges of the breach, wrenching it apart into an unstable aperture. Dragoš’s eyes lit up. “A direct pathing exploit! Perfect! This is why you always bring your support class!” He clapped Strahinja on the shoulder, a crackle of static passing between them. “Alright, Danica, cover me! And whatever you do, don't let those fake Dragoš models despawn! We need that stun-lock!” Before Danica could even formulate a response, Dragoš sprinted. He vaulted straight into the black aperture in the titan's chest, holding the GM Key high like a stolen torch. The duplicates battered the monster's flanks until the entity emitted a shockwave of dead sound. The glitching Dragoš models flickered, wavered, and then popped out of existence, leaving behind only the lingering echo of their absurd percussive assault. Inside the void, Dragoš felt nothing but a strange, exhilarating rush. It was like clipping through the final wall of a secret level. The miniature event horizon turned slowly before him, drawing in ribbons of stray data. Without a moment’s thought, he slammed the GM Access Token into its very center. [ADMIN_TOKEN DETECTED. ATTEMPTING INTERFACE INTEGRATION…] [ERROR: PROTOCOL MISMATCH. UNEXPECTED BEHAVIOR INITIATED.] Instead of collapsing, instead of exploding, the core… *shifted*. It didn’t break; it *opened*. Like a treasure chest. The entity's mass collapsed inward, streaming into the brass circuitry of the token. Dragoš watched, fascinated, as his UI shimmered. A new item icon appeared, vibrant and chaotic. [NEW ITEM ACQUIRED: THE SINGULARITY CORE (OFF-HAND)] [DESCRIPTION: A condensed, cosmic anomaly capable of manipulating spacetime on a localized scale. Warning: May cause spontaneous reality implosion. Consume with caution.] Dragoš chuckled, a low, satisfied sound. “Sweet! A new off-hand accessory! And it’s… the universe? Huh. Developer’s really getting creative with the loot tables.” He equipped it instantly. The titan shuddered violently. A soundless shriek rattled the flagstones as its limbs dissolved into black soot and were sucked into the talisman in Dragoš’s hand. The breach collapsed. Dragoš stood, alone, where the monster had been. The sky above, which had been a raw, weeping wound, began to mend itself, pulling shut like a rapidly healing scar. The oppressive dread lifted, replaced by an eerie, fragile calm. Danica stumbled toward him, staring at his outstretched fingers. “Dragoš… what… what did you do?” she whispered. The entity was gone, reduced to soot. He had looted a living disaster. Dragoš merely shrugged, a faint hum coming from the off-hand slot where the artifact glowed. “Just optimized the boss fight, Danica. Standard procedure. Always go for the core mechanic.” He looked down at his interface, expecting to see a huge XP gain, or maybe a new quest. Instead, his blue screen, for the first time, began to bleed red. A new, terrifying message flashed, filling his vision, drowning out everything else: [FATAL ERROR. WORLD DELETION IMMINENT. ADMIN INBOUND.]
