Chapter 3 of 10

The Ashen Retaliation

918 words

A moment later, a faint, rhythmic *thump-thump* grew louder, accompanied by an unsettling, phosphorescent glow that pulsed from deeper within. The putrid breeze carried pulverized lime and copper, slick against Danica's tongue. She hesitated at the threshold, the gaping maw of the passage a far more terrifying prospect than the outraged nobles she’d left behind. “My lord, are you certain?” Strahinja’s voice was a low rumble, laced with a tremor of unease. He gripped the hilt of his ceremonial dirk, his gaze darting into the unseen depths. The purple light, which had briefly flared around him earlier, was gone, replaced by a pallor that spoke of genuine fear. Danica glanced back at the chapel. The Silent Zmey, their black robes blending seamlessly with the shadows of the nave, were already melting away from the shocked courtiers, presumably following their 'god' into the abyss. There was no going back. With a sigh that tasted of ash, Danica stepped into the darkness, Strahinja close behind, his boots crunching on newly fallen rubble. Dragoš was already several paces ahead, a faint, blue-tinged light emanating from a small, glowing orb he held aloft. It wasn’t a torch, but some strange, ethereal device. The *thump-thump* intensified, shaking the very stone beneath their feet. The phosphorescence grew brighter, painting grotesque carvings on the damp walls – scenes of blood offerings and writhing, multi-limbed horrors. The humid air thickened, coating Danica's throat like oil. [NEW ZONE: CATHEDRAL CATACOMBS – ELDRITCH MALICE DETECTED] Dragoš ignored the message, mumbling, “Ah, a red zone. Good. More chance for epics.” He squinted ahead. “Hold up, this ‘thump’ effect is getting really aggressive. What’s with the screen filter?” Ahead, the passage opened into a vast, vaulted vault. In its center, a pool of viscous, crimson liquid bubbled and churned. The *thump-thump* originated there, the liquid rising and falling with each beat. As Danica watched, horrified, a dark, skeletal hand, dripping with viscous gore, slowly emerged from the pool. Then an arm, impossibly long, followed by a gaunt, horned head with eyes like chips of obsidian. The crowned brute of the vanguard dragged his bulk from the sanguine depths, his form knit from shadow and curdled blood. [WARNING: VANGUARD LIEGE – AREA-OF-EFFECT FEAR AURA ACTIVATED] Danica cried out as an iron clamp seized her skull, dragging her into dizzying dread. Memories of her family’s curse, of the whispers of the dying, of the suffocating twilight of Zvergrad, all converged, amplified a thousandfold. Her knees buckled, and she fell, gasping, her limbs refusing to obey. Beside her, Strahinja groaned, collapsing to one knee, his face contorted in agony, a faint purple glow once again flickering around his eyes before being violently suppressed. The towering figure surveyed the hall, his obsidian eyes burning. “The sacrifice. You defied the primordial pacts. Now, pay the true price, mortals.” His voice was a guttural rasp, vibrating through their very bones, filling the air with icy dread. He began to stalk forward, a predator savoring the fear of its prey, his form radiating an oppressive, mind-shattering aura. Dragoš, however, remained standing, an expression of mild annoyance on his face. He rubbed his temples vigorously. “Ugh, this red screen filter is seriously giving me a headache. And the stun-lock isn’t even working. Bad design.” He glanced at the approaching giant, then at his inventory. “Right, can’t let him get too close, might trigger a bad aggro chain. Need to block his pathing AI.” To Danica’s horror, Dragoš tore a massive, yellowed wheel of dairy rind from thin air. It measured the width of a carriage wheel, stamped with a faded sigil. He slammed it down before the fiend, then manifested another slab, then a third. Soon, a crude, rind-stacked bulwark blocked the monstrous advance. “What… what are you doing?” Danica managed to croak, her tongue swollen from the phantom chill. “Blocking his pathing,” Dragoš explained, stacking a fourth block. “Enemies usually get stuck on geometry they can’t calculate past. This should buy us time to sequence-break the encounter.” He tapped the greasy yellow rind. “Good old Khazal dairy, broken collision boxes every time.” The fiend ground to a halt, glaring down at the yellow barricade. A low growl rattled his ribcage. “You… you insult me with *curd*? You defile this sacred crypt with rind and brine?!” From high ledges along the rock, the Silent Zmey descended without a whisper. Arrayed along the damp walls, they watched the titan held at bay by a barricade of fermented wheels. Their eyes, visible even in the gloom, burned with a feverish, newfound devotion. Roaring till the arches vibrated, the monstrosity turned toward a winged grotesque jutting from the wall. A crimson whip cracked from his palm, wrapping around the carved percher. Lichen-crusted granite groaned and split as the sentinel’s eye sockets ignited with red fire. The stone beast wrenched itself free, landing with a bone-jarring crash that pulverized the yellow wheels into pungent meal. The automaton lurched toward Dragoš on rigid masonry joints. Dragoš frowned at its jerky stride. “Pathing still wonky. This boss needs a patch.” The construct raised an enormous carved fist and brought it down. Dragoš stepped aside; momentum drove the fist into flagstones. With a sharp crack, the fractured flagstones caved in completely. A gaping chasm, impossibly deep, opened beneath Danica’s feet. She screamed, the sound torn from her lungs as the ground vanished, plunging her into the suffocating, freezing darkness. “Gravity exploit!” Dragoš shouted, his voice filled with manic glee, as he leaped headfirst after her.
