Chapter 2: Provocative Lessons

1.2k words

Rain lashed against the heavy leaded windows of the Bringer estate, blurring the grand London streets into a smudge of charcoal and slate. Lily pressed her trembling fingertips to her bottom lip, still feeling the phantom heat of a touch that never should have happened. Yesterday’s scandalous encounter clung to her like damp wool, suffocating her thoughts. She was an eighteen-year-old debutante, raised to be silent, decorative, and perfectly behaved. Yet, Hunter Allert had shattered her fragile world in a single, breathless afternoon. "He is a fraud," she whispered to her reflection in the gilded vanity mirror. Pale cheeks and wide, panicked blue eyes stared back at her from the glass. How could she possibly sit across from him today? Her mother, Eleanor, had already made it clear that this new tutor was her last chance to avoid social ruin. A sharp knock on the bedroom door made her flinch violently. "Miss Lily," the maid's muffled voice called through the dark mahogany. "Your tutor is waiting in the morning room." Cold sweat broke out across her palms as she stood up. "Thank you, Mary," she called out, trying to steady her trembling voice. "I will be down in a moment." --- Descending the grand staircase felt like marching toward a scaffold. Lily clutched her leather-bound notebook against her chest like a shield. Scent of lemon oil and beeswax usually dominated the hallways, but today, a foreign aroma cut through the air. Rich tobacco and expensive, masculine soap signaled his presence before she even reached the threshold. Hunter stood by the high windows, gazing out at the rain with his hands casually draped in his trousers pockets. His white linen shirt clung perfectly to his broad shoulders, the collar slightly unbuttoned. Slowly, he turned around as the heavy door creaked open. A slow, devastating smile spread across his handsome face. "Good morning, Miss Bringer," he murmured, his voice a low, velvety purr that vibrated in her ears. "Mr. Allert," she replied, keeping her voice as flat as possible. She took a chair at the far end of the long mahogany table, trying to put as much distance between them as the room allowed. "You look tired," he noted, his amber eyes scanning her face with intense, predatory curiosity. "I slept perfectly fine," she lied, desperately opening her notebook to a random page. Hunter chuckled, a deep, teasing sound that made her stomach flutter. He walked over and pulled his own chair right next to her, leaving barely any space between them. "We should begin with the algebra syllabus," she insisted, her eyes glued to the numbers. "Of course," he murmured, leaning over her shoulder to look at her open book. Warm breath fanned the side of her neck, sending a sharp shiver straight down her spine. Lily tried to focus, but her fingers shook so badly she dropped her fountain pen. Before she could reach for it, Hunter’s hand shot out. His long, elegant fingers brushed over hers as he retrieved the pen, lingering just a second too long. "Nervous, Lily?" he whispered, dropping the formal title as soon as he knew the servants were out of earshot. "No," she gasped, pulling her hand back as if burned. "I am simply cold." "Liar," he whispered back. Hunter leaned back in his chair, stretching his arms behind his head. The movement pulled his shirt tight across his chest, drawing her eyes to the hard contours of his torso. Knowing she was watching, Hunter deliberately unbuttoned another button of his waistcoat. He reached up, running a hand through his thick, dark hair, letting a lock fall carelessly over his forehead. He looked less like an academic and more like a rogue who had wandered into a palace. "You aren't looking at the math, Lily," he teased, his voice dripping with amusement. "I am," she insisted, her heart hammering against her ribs. "Then tell me what this formula represents," he said, pointing a finger to a random equation on the page. His hand was mere millimeters from hers. Lily stared at the numbers, but they blurred together. Her mind was entirely consumed by his proximity, by the warmth radiating from his body, by the memories of his lips on hers. She stole a quick glance at him. Hunter caught her immediately. He was smiling, his eyes glittering with a dangerous, playful light. He leaned in, resting his chin on his hand, staring directly into her eyes. "You have very expressive eyes," he whispered. "They tell me you aren't thinking about geometry at all." "Please," she whispered, her voice barely audible. "Do not do this." "Do what?" He tilted his head, his lips parting slightly. "Teach you? I am only doing the job your mother paid me for." --- Two days passed, but the memory of his teasing touch refused to leave her. Lily found herself entirely confused by the kiss Hunter had given her previously, her mind spinning with a chaotic mix of desire and fear. She spent her nights staring at the ceiling, wondering if she was losing her mind. When Hunter arrived for their next session, she was already a bundle of raw nerves. The sound of his boots echoing in the corridor made her pulse spike. He entered the room with an easy, confident grace. He immediately noticed her jumpy, anxious demeanor and decided to torment her for it, leaning in close to whisper teasing remarks. "Still trembling, my little bird?" Hunter asked, closing the door behind him with a soft click. "I am not a bird," she said, her voice shaking despite her attempt at defiance. "You certainly look like one. Ready to take flight at the slightest touch," he said, walking slowly toward her. He didn't even bother to open a textbook this time. "We have a lot of material to cover today," she said, her voice rising in pitch as he drew closer. "Do we?" Hunter stood right in front of her table, leaning down so their faces were level. "I think you are far too distracted to learn anything today." "That is not true," she argued, though her racing pulse betrayed her. "Your cheeks are flushed, Lily. Your breathing is shallow," he pointed out, his voice dropping to a dangerous, seductive whisper. "And you haven't looked me in the eye once since I walked in." "I am trying to be professional," she mumbled, looking down at her lap. "Professional?" He laughed softly, a sound that sent heat pooling in her lower abdomen. "There is nothing professional about the way you look at me when you think I'm not paying attention." He reached out, his warm fingers gently wrapping around her chin, forcing her to look up at him. Lily gasped at the contact, her eyes locked onto his. "Are you afraid of me, Lily?" he asked, his thumb lightly brushing across her lower lip. "Yes," she whispered honestly. "Are you afraid of what I might do? Or what you want me to do?" He leaned closer, his lips almost touching hers. Overwhelmed by her own nervous tension and his relentless, suffocating proximity, the final thread of her control snapped. She didn't pull away. Instead, she leaned into his touch, her eyes closing in surrender. Hunter didn't hesitate. He pulled her up from her chair, his arms wrapping around her waist as he crushed his lips against hers, and they both ended up losing control, their lips colliding as they kissed each other once again.
