Chapter 3: First Blood, Cold Logic
688 words
Cold wind bit at his exposed skin. Kael shivered, but not from fear this time. A strange hum vibrated within his bones, a low thrum of nascent power. He stared at the fallen Dire Wolf, its shaggy fur stained dark. The System's crimson text still floated, a silent promise.
His gaze flickered to the quest log. 'First Hunt: Slay 5 Dire Wolves.' One down. Four to go.
A grim resolve settled over him, displacing the last vestiges of terror. This wasn't about survival anymore. This was about understanding. This was about power. His past humiliation, the years of ridicule, they were fuel now, not chains.
He moved, cautious but determined. The dungeon corridor stretched ahead, damp and reeking of earth and decay. His boots crunched on scattered pebbles. Every shadow seemed to hold a threat, but he sought them out now, rather than shying away.
First, he needed a weapon. The crude club from before was gone, likely dropped in his panic. A broken stalactite, jagged and heavy, lay embedded in the floor nearby. He wrenched it free, the stone scraping against rock. It was unwieldy, but solid. This would do.

A low growl echoed from around a bend. Kael froze. He didn't rush in. His heart rate remained steady, a stark contrast to the pounding terror that usually seized him. This was different. He was different.
He pressed his back against the cold, rough wall, peering cautiously around the corner. Two glowing eyes met his. Another Dire Wolf, larger than the first, emerged from the gloom. Its teeth, long and yellowed, glistened.
Memory flashed: the first wolf's vulnerability. Its blind spot, its slower turn radius when attacking. He had learned from his suffering.
The wolf snarled, lunging forward. Kael didn't panic. He waited, letting the beast close the distance. At the last possible moment, he sidestepped, not away, but slightly *into* its path, aiming to throw off its trajectory.
He swung the jagged stalactite in a wide, arcing motion, bringing it down with all his meager strength. The stone struck the wolf's flank, not a fatal blow, but a jarring one. A yelp of pain erupted from the creature.
Fury flared in its eyes. It spun, faster this time, snapping its jaws. Kael stumbled back, narrowly avoiding a bite that would have torn his arm off. His breath hitched. The old fear tried to creep in, a cold finger tracing his spine.
No. He pushed it back. This wasn't the old Kael.
He watched its movements, its patterns. The wolf favored its right paw, its left moving with less agility. A weakness.
Feinting right, Kael drew its attention, then darted left, circling. The wolf lunged again, but its turn was slightly delayed. He capitalized on it, driving the jagged stalactite into its exposed left side, just behind the ribs. A sickening crunch echoed in the confined space.
The wolf whined, collapsing. It thrashed, blood bubbling from its mouth. Kael didn't hesitate. He brought the heavy stone down again, and again, until the thrashing stopped. His arms burned, but a strange, clinical satisfaction settled within him.
"Dire Wolf Slain. EXP + 5."
"Quest Progress: 2/5 Dire Wolves Slain."

He took a moment, leaning against the damp wall, catching his breath. His hands trembled, not from fear, but from the exertion. He glanced at his status.
'STATUS' Name: Kael Draven Level: 1 EXP: 10/100 Class: None HP: 10/10 MP: 5/5 Strength: 5 Dexterity: 6 Constitution: 5 Intelligence: 7 Wisdom: 6 Luck: 1 Available Points: 0
His HP had dropped to 10/10 again. The system must have fully healed him after the level up. Good to know. He noticed his 'Strength' was still 5. He needed more kills, more experience.
A primal hunger, cold and sharp, began to stir within him. It wasn't for food or warmth. It was for the numbers, for the growth, for the undeniable truth that he was no longer helpless.
He pushed off the wall, his gaze sharper, more focused. The dungeon now felt less like a tomb and more like a training ground. Each fight, a lesson. Each kill, a step.
