Chapter 1: Whispers of the Wyvern's Maw

840 words

Muscles screamed with every clumsy swing of Kael's rusty short sword. The blade, dull and chipped, grated uselessly against the Dire Wolf's matted fur. A guttural snarl vibrated through the damp stone walls of the Wyvern's Maw, echoing the frantic beat of Kael's own heart. His breath hitched, a raw gasp in the stale, musty air. Cold sweat plastered his dark hair to his forehead, stinging his eyes. His worn leather armor, patched countless times, groaned under the strain, its seams threatening to burst. It offered meager protection against the beast's savage assault. Kael stumbled back, his worn boots slipping on slick moss-covered flagstones. Jagged teeth, yellowed and long, snapped inches from his face. A hot, fetid gust of breath washed over him, reeking of carrion and fresh blood. He felt the wind of its passage, a chilling whisper of imminent death. The wolf's eyes, like glowing embers in the dim light, fixed on him with a hunter's cruel intelligence. This was supposed to be easy. Eldermere's local 'dungeon', the Wyvern's Maw, was legendarily decrepit, mostly picked clean by generations of adventurers. Kael had heard whispers of a few stray goblins, maybe a starved kobold or two. Nothing like this. Foolishness. His own overconfidence, a desperate grasp at proving himself, had led him here. To this crumbling, forgotten place, where shadows stretched long and hungry, and ancient damp seeped into his very bones. He had imagined himself returning, a minor hero, with enough pelts to earn a few coppers and silence the village's whispers. Instead, a starving Dire Wolf, gaunt but terrifyingly agile, had cornered him. Its emaciated frame spoke of desperation, yet its ferocity was undiminished. He'd barely landed a scratch. His short sword felt like a toy, heavy and useless in his trembling grip. Again, the wolf lunged. Kael brought up his shield – a dented, second-hand buckler – with a desperate, clumsy parry. The impact rattled his teeth, sending a jolt up his arm that threatened to dislocate his shoulder. He cried out, a pathetic whimper lost in the beast's triumphant growl. Strength failed him. Every muscle screamed in protest, burning with an exhaustion that went beyond physical exertion. This was the same old story. Every sparring match, every 'easy' hunt with the village boys, ended the same way. Kael, flat on his back, winded, defeated. His peers, even the younger ones, already cast minor spells, their hands humming with nascent mana. Or they wielded steel with a practiced grace that made Kael's movements look like a newborn fawn's first steps. He was seventeen, and he was nothing. A burden. A joke. Humiliation burned hotter than the ache in his lungs. He remembered the snickers when he’d tried to lift the smith’s hammer, the pitying looks when his rudimentary magic lessons ended in fizzles and coughs of smoke. Elarion prized strength, valued power above all else. And Kael Draven had neither. He wanted it so badly. Not for glory, not for fame, but for the quiet satisfaction of competence. To never again feel the suffocating weight of inadequacy. To stand tall. To be enough. But here, in the cold, stinking maw of this forgotten dungeon, 'enough' felt miles away. The Dire Wolf circled, its low growl a promise of pain. Its movements were fluid, predatory, a stark contrast to Kael's rigid, uncoordinated flailing. He was a meal, nothing more. One of his boots caught on a loose stone. Kael pitched forward, landing hard on one knee. His sword clattered against the dungeon floor, slipping from his grasp, sliding away into the gloom. He scrambled, fingers scrabbling uselessly, the hilt just out of reach. Terror, cold and absolute, seized him. Without his sword, he was truly defenseless. The buckler was too small, too weak. He was trapped. The wolf took advantage, closing the distance in a blur of gray fur and savage intent. Its head lowered, ready to strike. His heart hammered against his ribs, a frantic drumbeat of pure fear. He could practically feel the fangs tearing into his flesh, taste the metallic tang of his own blood. This was it. This was how his pathetic life ended. Alone, in a forgotten dungeon, chewed apart by a starving beast he was too weak to fight. He closed his eyes, a final, choked sob escaping his throat. A memory flashed: his mother’s worried frown, his father’s distant disappointment. They had tried. They had truly tried to find a spark in him. But there was nothing. Just Kael, perpetually, unforgivably weak. The wolf's growl deepened, a guttural rumble that vibrated through the stone, through Kael's very bones. He braced for the impact, the searing pain, the final, crushing bite. He felt the warmth of its body, the sharp claws digging into the stone beside his head as it coiled, preparing its lethal lunge. As the Dire Wolf lunged for his throat, its eyes burning with savage hunger, a faint, almost melodic 'DING!' echoed in the sudden, absolute silence, a voice whispering, 'System Activated... Seek Life. Seek Power. Level Up.'
