Chapter 9 of 10

Echoes of the Abyss

1.1k words

The stench of a thousand deaths, a thousand failures, choked Kavi. The Null-Lord, a silhouette against the void’s sickly glow, watched them from atop the colossal effigy of fused bodies, its many faces fixed in silent screams. At its peak, the original Kavi, a shriveled husk, still held the rip in reality open, the source of all their suffering. “So, the latest copy arrives,” the entity's voice resonated, not through air, but inside their skulls, a glacial, dismissive sneer. “You stand before your destiny, Kavi. A cycle, perfectly preserved.” Kavi’s usual retort died on his tongue. The sight of his past selves, a monument to despair, was a punch to the gut. It wasn’t just a boss; it was a mirror reflecting every nightmare he’d suppressed. “L-Lord Kavi,” Krodhas stammered, his usual swagger replaced by a rare tremor. He gripped his immense Rift-Axe and Grim-Shield, the polished steel reflecting the twisted horrors. “What… what *is* that?” “My greatest hits album,” Kavi managed, forcing a grin that felt like breaking glass. “Limited edition, signed by yours truly. Shame about the poor reviews.” Vith phased beside him, his ghostly form more substantial in this abyssal realm. “Focus, Ranat. This ‘album’ means the Null-Lord knows every move you *could* make.” His voice, for once, lacked its usual bite, a subtle acknowledgment of the gravity. Nirupa stood ready, her dual blades humming faintly, eyes sharp and focused, even if the recognition in them was gone. The demon ruler simply tilted its head, a gesture of profound contempt. “How tedious. You bring more toys.” A ripple of absolute silence spread from the Null-Lord, not a sound departing, but all sound *ceasing*. The bickering, roaring legion, the hundreds of revitalized demons Kavi commanded, fell silent. Then, without a sound, without a trace of impact or struggle, half of them simply evaporated. Not dispersed, not torn, but *unmade*. Their essence, their borrowed life, extinguished as if they had never existed. The remaining legion members, a hundred or so, recoiled, their demonic chatter replaced by whimpers and fearful growls. Krodhas roared, a sound of pure, unadulterated fury, and charged. His Rift-Axe, glowing with borrowed divine force, swung in a wide arc meant to cleave the entire colossus in two. “Brash, predictable,” Malgath intoned. A coil of pure, inky shadow erupted from the mass of corpses, not meeting Krodhas’s axe, but *through* it. The Rift-Axe, a weapon forged in the very heart of Jatar’s cosmic forge, groaned, then *shattered* into a thousand shimmering fragments of light. Krodhas’s Grim-Shield fared no better, disintegrating into dust. The God of War stumbled back, staring at his empty hands, a raw, exposed wound of humiliation in his blood-soaked eyes. “My… my blades…” Krodhas whispered, his voice hoarse, disbelief warring with incandescent rage. He was unarmed, his divine tools reduced to dust. “The rules are changing, Kavi,” Vith murmured, his phantom form flickering, a hint of unease in his endless eyes. “No more recycling old tactics.” Nirupa moved. She didn’t wait for Kavi’s command, didn’t hesitate. Her blades flashed, not at the master of the rift, but at the grotesque mountain of dead men, aiming for the joints where limbs fused. She weaved through the residual Null-exhaust, her movements fluid and deadly, a dance of practiced precision. She targeted seam-lines Kavi himself had pried open during their scavenger runs along the serpent bone-ridges. Even without memory, her body remembered the rhythm of their shared fight. “We’re a bit short on the ‘out-duel’ strategy here,” Kavi muttered, watching Nirupa create brief, localized ruptures in the monstrosity’s form. The stitched tissue knitted instantly, but her attacks drew the overlord’s attention. “How about ‘improvise like hell’?” The archdemon, annoyed, extended a barbed ribbon of black glass, aiming straight for Nirupa’s back. Kavi didn’t think. He *moved*. His muscles burned against the soul-strain, but he pushed past it, throwing a blast of necrotic grit that deflected the strike just enough. “Hey! Ugly!” Kavi yelled, drawing the fiend’s gaze. “You wanted me, right? Stop playing with my friends. They’re sensitive.” The monstrosity’s mantle rippled. “You are a clown, Kavi. A hollow echo of a greater man.” The void-spike, thicker and slick with caustic oil, turned from Nirupa. It lashed out with terrifying speed, aiming straight for Kavi’s chest. Kavi didn’t dodge. He didn’t try to block. He *leaned into it*. A sharp, blinding pain erupted as the abyssal blade punched through his sternum, cold and utterly violating. He gasped, a wet, choking sound, blood bubbling past his lips. His fingers, locked in frantic spasm, clamped around the black shaft, trapping it within his own chest wall. His grip, locked with the Mandate’s lingering current, held firm like an iron clamp. “Now!” Kavi choked out, the word torn from his bleeding throat. Krodhas, seeing the opening, bellowed. His humiliation transmuted into a raw, primal surge of power. Unarmed, he launched himself at Malgath, his bare fists glowing with internal, divine light, a torrent of righteous wrath. He smashed into the mound of corpses, gouging out shattered ribs and withered flesh, the impact rattling the entire blasphemous pillar. At the same instant, Vith, who had circled as a pale blur, materialized at Malgath's spine. His shadowy blade materialized, dripping with condensed null-bile. It plunged deep into Malgath’s back, into the very core of its hateful intellect, seeking the nexus of its will. The Null-Lord shrieked, a sound that ripped at the fabric of the abyssal dimension itself. The lance impaling Kavi thrashed to pull free, but his knuckles stayed locked. Krodhas kept tearing chunks from the composite pillar with his bare fingers, while Vith twisted his blade, carving open the entity's core. The Null-Lord’s form began to unravel, its hateful intellect flickering like a dying flame. With a final screech that cracked the surrounding void, the towering pile of dead iterations collapsed into a storm of putrid ash. The original Kavi, no longer supported, floated listlessly for a moment, then also dissolved, his face finally finding a semblance of peace. The Null-Rift, which he had held open, began to convulse, its maw contracting, then expanding violently, threatening to consume everything. The void-spear impaling Kavi retracted, leaving him reeling, gasping for air, a gaping, smoking wound in his chest. His knees buckled, and Nirupa was there in an instant, her arms around him, her gaze, though devoid of their history, filled with an ancient, instinctual concern. Krodhas stood panting, his knuckles raw, his rage spent but his eyes alight with grim satisfaction. Vith rematerialized beside them, his spectral form pulsing, his gaze on the convulsing Null-Rift Core. [The threads of destiny unravel, the weave undone.] [A choice now looms, an abyss or a sun.] [Devour the Lord, become the Abyss, or let the world shatter into the mist?]
