Chapter 22 of 35

The Siege of Shattered Ridge

780 words

The cold mountain wind howled through the basalt pass as Clone Twelve—the General—stood atop a jagged ridge overlooking the excavation camp below. Heavy snow mixed with grey ash spiraled through the air, but the General remained completely still, his dark-iron armor absorbing the ambient light. Beside him, the Warrior’s skin glowed with a low, volcanic ember, while the Guardian stood like a mountain of stone, its massive tower shield resting heavily on the frozen ground. In the shadow behind them, Clone Eleven, the Void Weaver, hovered silently, spatial energy crackling faintly around its fingers. Below, the Iron-Clad Sect’s remaining defensive force at the Shattered Ridge was in complete disarray. News of the disaster in Cloud-Spire City had shattered their morale. Half their guards had been recalled to defend the main sect hall, leaving only a lone, wounded Foundation Establishment elder and twenty exhausted enforcers to hold the valuable spirit vein. "The objective is absolute suppression," the General commanded softly through the local neural link. His passive talent, War Formation, radiated outward in a thirty-yard invisible sphere, instantly locking the four clones into a single, perfectly synchronized combat unit. "Guardian takes the front. Warrior breaks their line. Void Weaver isolates the elder." "Understood," the three clones responded as one mind. Without a sound, the Guardian leaped from the forty-foot cliff. BOOM. The Guardian crashed into the center of the camp like a fallen meteor, his tower shield slamming into the earth with a violent wave of physical shock energy. The perimeter wooden palisades shattered into thousands of splinters. Iron-Clad guards were thrown thirty feet into the air, their chest plates crushed before they could even draw their blades. Before the dust could clear, the Warrior surged through the breach. Moving with terrifying, explosive speed under the General’s tactical buff, the Warrior’s fists became molten comets. A single sweep of its arm incinerated three guards, their iron armor melting like candle wax. "Enemy attack!" the wounded Iron-Clad elder roared, bursting out of his command tent with a glowing broadsword. "Form the defensive ring! Destroy them!" He raised his blade to unleash a wave of sword-qi, but the spatial fabric behind him warped violently. SPATIAL BLINK. Clone Eleven materialized directly behind the elder, extending a single, dark-gloved finger to touch the back of the man's neck. A localized spatial compression field snapped into place around the elder's head, instantly suffocating his spiritual pressure and locking his limbs in solid, folded space. "You are out of position, old man," the Void Weaver whispered. Before the elder could trigger his self-destruct core, the Warrior appeared in front of him, driving a white-hot, molten palm directly through his chest cavity. The fight was over in less than forty seconds. SYSTEM NOTIFICATION: LOCATION SECURED: SHATTERED RIDGE SPIRIT VEIN. HOSTILE FORCES ANNIHILATED: 1 FOUNDATION ESTABLISHMENT ELDER, 22 BODY REFINEMENT ENFORCERS. ENERGY ABSORBED: +280 UNITS. RESOURCE CLAIMED: MEDIUM-GRADE SPIRIT VEIN (DAILY DIRECT YIELD: 150 ENERGY UNITS). Thirty miles away, sitting upon his obsidian throne in the Sinkhole Sanctuary, Lylin opened his eyes. The direct integration of a medium-grade spirit vein into his system network caused a visible wave of blue energy to pulse through the cavern walls. SYSTEM UPDATE: FIRST SURFACE OUTPOST ESTABLISHED: SHATTERED RIDGE FORTRESS. AUTOMATIC DEFENSIVE ARRAY ACTIVATED. DAILY BASE ENERGY GENERATION: INCREASED TO 400 UNITS/DAY. Simultaneously, reports from Cloud-Spire City flooded through the mental link. Clone Thirteen, the Curse Master, had successfully slipped into the medical wards of both the Sun-Glow Guild and the Iron-Clad Sect. Using its untraceable Miasma Touch, it had injected a slow-acting, spiritual-decay toxin into the wounds of their highest-ranking leaders. To the outside world, it appeared their injuries from the street war had simply festered, leaving both factions completely leaderless and paralyzed within twenty-four hours. Meanwhile, Clone Fourteen—the Sect Steward—had opened the doors of the "Shadow-Rest Association" in the lower district. Using the Mind Anchor talent, he had already bound forty homeless, desperate rogue cultivators into a fierce, absolute loyalty to the hidden organization, offering them high-purity pills in exchange for absolute obedience. The entire Azure Cloud Domain was falling into Lylin's hands piece by piece, without a single major faction realizing who held the knife. Lylin stood up from his throne, his dark robes flowing like liquid night as he looked down at his internal status interface. SYSTEM STATUS: HOST REALM: EARLY FOUNDATION ESTABLISHMENT. ACTIVE CLONES: 14. DAILY CREATION CAPACITY: 3. TOTAL ENERGY RESERVES: 630 / 250. "The lower realm is settled," Lylin said smoothly, his raspy voice carrying a terrifying, unshakeable confidence. "Tomorrow at dawn, we begin constructing the planetary array. It is time to look beyond the Azure Cloud Domain... and step into the remaining ten human worlds."
