Chapter 18 of 35

The Silk and the Steel

750 words

Within three days of securing a modest two-story storefront on the Street of the Blacksmiths, the "Immortal Pavilion" opened its heavy wooden doors. To the passing cultivators of Cloud-Spire City, it appeared to be nothing more than a new, quiet apothecary selling standard low-grade pills. However, the pills displayed on its velvet-lined shelves were far from standard. Refined by Clone Five, the Alchemist, each pill possessed a purity level exceeding ninety percent—nearly double the potency of the murky, impurity-laden concoctions sold by the local sect-backed guilds. Yet, Clone Four, the Merchant, listed them at half the standard price. By noon on the second day, a crowd of low-tier cultivators and rogue mercenaries had gathered outside the shop, shouting and shoving to buy out the entire inventory. Inside the back office, the Merchant clone sat calmly behind a mahogany desk, swirling a cup of clear tea. Beside him stood Clone Seven, the Forger, carefully engraving miniature, microscopic override runes onto the bottom of every ceramic pill bottle before they were handed to customers. Through the shared link, Lylin observed the steady stream of spirit-crystals piling into the shop’s vault. "Host," the Merchant communicated smoothly. "At this rate, our daily financial turnover in Cloud-Spire City will exceed two thousand spirit-crystals. The local market is hooked. However, this pricing strategy will inevitably draw the wrath of the Sun-Glow Guild—the primary pill supplier in the lower district." "Let them come," Lylin replied from the subterranean sanctuary, his tone laced with cold indifference. "If they seek to buy us out, sell them our pills in bulk. Every bottle they buy carries our Forger's hidden array. Every pill their high-ranking elders consume contains a trace of our Alchemist's dormant tracking agent." Meanwhile, thirty miles to the north, near the desolate perimeter of the Shattered Ridge, Clone Six—the Infiltrator—stood over the fresh corpse of an Iron-Clad Sect scout. The scout had been silently ambushed and killed by Clone Three, the Assassin, moments prior. Kneeling beside the body, the Infiltrator extended its hands. The Faceless Veneer talent activated instantly. A dark, liquid mist covered the Infiltrator's face and body; skin shifted, bones cracked and realigned, and its spiritual aura warped until it perfectly matched the deceased scout's breath, voice, and facial features. The Infiltrator stripped the dead man's blood-stained iron armor, donned it in seconds, and picked up the scout’s identity token. "Infiltration successful, Host," Clone Six reported in the dead scout's raspy, gruff voice. "I am returning to the Iron-Clad forward camp. Their command structure is currently in disarray following the theft of the spirit-crystals." "Enter their ranks," Lylin commanded coldly. "Spread rumors that the Sun-Glow Guild in Cloud-Spire City is fencing the stolen crystals. Drive the two factions into conflict." "Understood, Host," the Infiltrator replied, turning to march back toward the iron-walled camp with perfect, practiced military strides. Back in the Sinkhole Sanctuary, the system interface in Lylin's mind space flashed with gold text as the daily timer reset once again. SYSTEM NOTIFICATION: DAILY REFRESH COMPLETE. HOST ENERGY RESTORED: 100/100. AVAILABLE CLONES: 2/2. CURRENT ACTIVE CLONES: 7. Lylin stood up from his stone platform, feeling the surging strength of seven distinct sensory feeds merging seamlessly into his mind. The mental load was immense, a heavy pressure throbbing behind his eyes, but his terrifying willpower kept the vast network running with absolute precision. "CREATE CLONE." One hundred units of energy drained. Two new vortices of light and dark mist materialized near the deepened azure pool. Out of the mist stepped Clone Eight, a stern man with broad shoulders carrying a massive iron hammer—a Blacksmith with a talent for forging spirit-weapons; and Clone Nine, a quiet figure wrapped in scholar’s robes whose eyes flickered with the erratic light of a Diviner, capable of calculating short-term probabilities and danger vectors. With nine clones active, Lylin’s web had extended into trade, alchemy, espionage, assassination, arrays, forgery, manufacturing, and foresight. He walked to the edge of the spiritual pool, staring down into his reflection. The frail, impaled survivor who had bled on a jagged stone weeks ago was gone. In his place sat a phantom emperor whose unseen roots were wrapping tightly around the foundation of the Azure Cloud Domain. Far above the clouds, atop the petrified mountain peaks, the colossal three-headed serpent slowly shifted its ancient body. Its liquid-gold eyes narrowed as it looked down upon Cloud-Spire City, sensing that the silent, creeping shadow beneath the world had just tied its first true knot around the necks of the living.
