Chapter 9 of 10
The Rain and the Reclamation
1.8k words
The rain came down in violent, heavy sheets, blurring the neon lights of the university district into streaks of fractured color. It was past two in the morning, and the narrow alleyways around the old student apartments were completely deserted, save for the steady, thunderous drumming of the downpour.
Inside her old studio apartment, Hazel sat on the edge of a mattress that felt far too small and far too cold compared to the sprawling bed in the penthouse. The room smelled of dust and old paper, lacking the rich vanilla and clean cedar scent that had come to define her life over the past few months.
She was wrapped in her favorite oversized sweater, her knees pulled tightly to her chest. She hadn't shed a single tear since she left. Her puppy-like energy was completely hollowed out, replaced by a dull, aching numbness. She looked down at her bare left hand, the skin where her wedding ring used to sit feeling strangely light and exposed.
It's better this way, she repeated to herself, a fragile lie to keep her heart from shattering completely. He doesn't have to pretend anymore. He can find his soulmate, and I can stop waiting for a cat to become a husband.
Suddenly, a violent, crashing sound shattered the quiet of the alleyway below.
---
The sharp screech of tires echoed through the bricks, followed by the heavy, echoing slam of a car door. Hazel blinked, leaning toward the small window that overlooked the street.
Through the blurred, water-streaked glass, she saw a sleek, dark sports car parked haphazardly across the narrow curb, its headlights cutting through the dark like two predatory eyes. And then, she saw him.
Ethan.
He didn't have an umbrella. His pristine charcoal dress shirt was already soaked through, sticking to the broad, powerful lines of his chest and shoulders. His dark hair was plastered against his forehead, obscuring his face, but his posture was unmistakable. He looked like a creature possessed, his long strides taking him straight toward the entrance of her building.
Before Hazel could even stand up, a heavy, thunderous pounding rattled her weak wooden door.
BANG. BANG. BANG.
"Hazel!" Ethan’s voice tore through the thin hallway, raw, breathless, and filled with a frantic, terrifying desperation she had never heard from him in her entire life. "Hazel! Open the door! I know you're in there!"
Hazel’s heart slammed against her ribs. She stumbled backwards, her hands trembling. "Ethan, go away! I left you a note! We're done pretending!"
"I'm not pretending!" Ethan roared back, his fist slamming against the wood so hard the frame creaked. "If you don't open this door right now, Hazel, I swear to god I will kick it off its hinges! Open it!"
Recognizing the dangerous, unyielding register in his voice, Hazel rushed forward and threw the lock open, pulling the door inward. "Ethan, are you crazy?! It's two in the morning, you're making a scene—"
She didn't get to finish.
---
The moment the door cleared, Ethan lunged forward like a starved predator. His large, rain-soaked hands grabbed her shoulders, his grip iron-firm and trembling with sheer, unadulterated panic. He pushed her backward into the small room, slamming the door shut behind him with his heel.
"Why did you leave?" he rasped out, his breathing ragged, his chest heaving violently against hers. His feline eyes were bloodshot, wide, and completely fractured. The aloof prince was entirely dead; in his place was a man on the absolute brink of ruin. "How could you leave the ring? How could you write that piece of trash note and think I would let you go?!"
"Because you don't want me!" Hazel shouted back, her tears finally bursting through the dam, hot and angry against her cheeks. She tried to push his heavy chest away, but he was like a brick wall, crowding her until her back hit the worn wallpaper of the studio. "You went back to your parents! You went to dinner with Miss Kang! You treated me like a stranger for three days, Ethan! You locked me out of your life because I'm just a business deal to you!"
"It was blackmail!" Ethan screamed, the truth tearing out of his throat like a jagged blade.
Hazel froze, her hands stalling against his chest. She blinked through her tears. "What...?"
"Director Kang had photos of me from months ago," Ethan whispered, his voice cracking as a single, heavy drop of rain—or a tear—slid down his sharp cheek. His hands slid from her shoulders to cup her face, his thumbs wiping her tears with a desperate, trembling tenderness. "Before we got married. Photos of me at a club in Itaewon. They were going to leak them to the board. They were going to ruin the succession, and they were going to label you as a fraudulent bride who married a gay man for money. They were going to drag your name through the mud, Hazel."
He leaned down, his forehead dropping heavily against hers, his breath hot and ragged against her lips.
"I couldn't let them touch you," he choked out, his possessive worry completely exposing his soul. "I couldn't let them ruin your beautiful, innocent life because of my past. My mother told me that if I didn't play along for one dinner, if I didn't make them think our marriage was just a cold partnership, they would release the leak. I only went to that dinner to destroy their servers, Hazel. I did it to protect you. I did it so no one could ever threaten our home again."
---
Hazel’s breath hitched, her mind spinning as the pieces of the puzzle violently crashed together. The coldness, the isolation, the rigid suits—he hadn't been pulling away because he regretted their intimacy. He had been standing in the freezing rain, taking the blows so she wouldn't have to feel a single drop.
"Ethan..." she breathed, her heart aching with a profound, overwhelming wave of love and sorrow. "You dummy... why didn't you just tell me? We're supposed to be partners. We're seatmates."
"Because I was terrified," Ethan confessed softly, his dark eyes locking onto hers with a raw, scorching honesty that stripped away every boundary they had ever known. "I was terrified that if you saw the photos, or if you realized how messy my world really is, you would look at me with pity. Or worse... you would realize that a guy like me could never give you the traditional life you deserve. But when I walked into that empty penthouse tonight and saw your ring on that desk... I realized I don't care about the world. I don't care about my family's company. I only care about you. If you leave me, Hazel, I have nothing left to protect."
Looking at his beautiful, ruined face, Hazel knew the slow burn was officially over. The fire had caught, and it was beautiful.
She reached up, her arms wrapping fiercely around his wet neck, pulling him down to her. "I don't want a traditional life," she sobbed into his shoulder, her puppy-like devotion cementing them together forever. "I only want you. Cold cat, grumpy prince, whatever you are—I'm not going anywhere."
Ethan let out a long, ragged breath that sounded like a prayer. His arms wrapped around her waist, lifting her entirely off the floor as his mouth crashed onto hers.
This kiss was completely different from the kitchen island. The miscommunication was gone, the blackmailer was crushed, and there were no more secrets left between them. It was a deep, consuming, and deeply intimate reclamation. He carried her across the small room toward the bed, his hands sliding under her sweater to grip the warm, bare skin of her waist, needing to feel every inch of the woman who held his entire universe in her hands.
Ethan lowered her onto the mattress, his heavy, rain-dampened frame following her down until the small bed creaked beneath their combined weight. He didn't break the kiss for a single second. The urgency that had driven him across the city in the middle of a storm was still vibrating through his muscles, but as his hands slid higher up her waist, the frantic panic slowly dissolved into a deep, heavy reverence.
The damp fabric of his charcoal shirt pressed against her sweater, a stark contrast of cold rain and radiating skin-to-skin heat. Hazel tangled her fingers into his wet hair, pulling him closer, her innocent heart completely opening up to the weight of his possession. There were no more walls, no more corporate scripts, and no more hiding behind the definition of what they were supposed to be.
Ethan’s lips left her mouth, tracing a burning path down the smooth line of her jaw to the sensitive dip of her collarbone. A soft, helpless gasp escaped Hazel’s throat as his thumbs hooked into the hem of her oversized sweater, slowly pulling it up and over her head, casting it aside into the shadows of the small room.
Underneath, her skin was warm and flushed a delicate pink in the dim light of the alleyway neon. Ethan paused for a fraction of a second, his dark, cat-like eyes sweeping over her with a gaze so intensely focused, so thoroughly consumed, that it made her breath hitch. He reached down to untie his silk tie, tossing it to the floor before unbuttoning his vest and shirt with trembling fingers. When he slid his broad, solid chest back against hers, the friction of their bare skin sent a scorching jolt through both of them.
"Hazel," he murmured against her skin, his voice a rough, gravelly whisper that made her shiver. His large hands moved down to the waistband of her shorts, his touch remarkably tender for the sheer strength behind it. "Look at me."
She blinked her eyes open, her round, puppy-like gaze meeting his dark, fierce stare.
"From tonight on, I am never letting you go back to this corner," Ethan whispered, his knuckles gently brushing her cheek as he positioned himself over her, his hips pressing flush against hers, leaving no doubt about the depth of his desire. "You are my wife. My real wife. Do you understand?"
"Yes," Hazel breathed, her hands sliding down the smooth, muscular planes of his back, pulling him down to her with an unshakeable devotion. "I'm yours, Ethan."
The small studio apartment, with its peeling wallpaper and the rhythmic, heavy thudding of the downpour against the windowpane, became the backdrop to a quiet, consuming surrender. The slow-burn boundaries they had guarded for a decade finally melted completely in the dark, replaced by a deep, breathless intimacy that anchored their souls together, far beyond the reach of the outside world.
