Chapter 2: The Golden Canopy's Judgment

Warmth pressed against Purrs’s damp fur, a stark contrast to the freezing alley she had just escaped. High grass tickled her ears, smelling of sweet clover and rich, damp earth. Before her loomed the silver giant, his amber eyes narrowing with deep suspicion as he stared down at the shivering intruder.
Gravely, the massive feline leaned down, sniffing her shivering frame. His breath felt like a summer breeze, yet his posture remained stiff and guarded. He winced slightly as he shifted his weight, his left hind leg trembling under some unseen, painful burden.
Golden light seemed to pulse from the very soil of this strange new world. Purrs cowered, her tiny tail tucked tightly between her legs. She wanted to run, but her frozen limbs refused to cooperate, leaving her at the mercy of the silver beast.
"Who sent you, little one?" his voice rumbled, vibrating through the soft earth beneath her paws. He did not wait for her squeaking response. With a swift, gentle but firm scruff of his teeth, he lifted her into the air.
Every bounce of his stride jolted her small body, but she dared not squirm. Hanging from his jaws, she watched the landscape blur beneath them. Endless fields of emerald grass rolled out like a vast ocean, dotted with glowing blue flowers that swayed without any wind.
Suddenly, the flat plains gave way to a dense forest of towering oaks. Felines of all sizes moved through the branches, their eyes shining like small lanterns in the twilight. Some watched them pass with curious tilts of their heads, while others hissed softly, sensing the scent of the human world clinging to Purrs's fur.
Massive roots snaked across the ground, leading toward a structure that made Purrs’s breath catch in her throat. Looming ahead stood a colossal human ruin, an abandoned cathedral of gray stone. Nature had completely reclaimed the sacred space, wrapping its pointed arches in thick ivy and golden wildflowers.
As they crossed the threshold, the sheer scale of the ruins made Purrs feel smaller than an insect. High arched ceilings stretched toward the sky, where the roof had long since collapsed. Woven grass bridges spanned the gaps between pillars, allowing cats to traverse the heights with ease.
Stained-glass windows, cracked and covered in dust, filtered the afternoon light into long shafts of colored dust. This was the heart of the kingdom, a sanctuary built from the ruins of a forgotten human past. Hundreds of felines walked the stone buttresses, their tails held high in quiet dignity.

Walking deeper into the cathedral, the silver giant finally set Purrs down on the cool marble floor. Her tiny, dirty paws slipped on the polished surface. She immediately huddled close to his massive leg, seeking even a shred of warmth against the intimidating vastness of the grand chamber.
Gently nudging her forward, Silverclaw guided her toward the center of the hall. High above on a ruined altar sat a majestic golden cat. His crown was a simple circlet of woven wheat, yet his gaze held the weight of centuries, heavy and filled with quiet authority.
Surrounding him on stone tiers were the elders of the Council of the Grass Region, their eyes burning with intense curiosity and suspicion. Silence descended upon the vast chamber, thick and suffocating. Only the rustling of the wind through the broken ceiling broke the quiet.
"Elder Silverclaw," the golden king spoke, his voice rich and deep, echoing off the stone walls. "What creature do you bring before the Grass Council? She smells of the outer world. She smells of our greatest enemies."
Silverclaw bowed his head, though his hind leg buckled slightly under the movement, causing him to wince. "Your Majesty, King Aurelius. I found her emerging from a sudden tear in our magical boundary. She is a stray. A survivor from the cold lands beyond our borders."
Whispers erupted among the tiered stone seats, sounding like dry leaves in a storm. A sleek, black she-cat with sharp green eyes leaned forward, her claws scraping against the stone. "A stray? Or a spy? The Searchers have been active along our borders, seeking our lifeforce. Sending a harmless-looking kitten is exactly the kind of trick those human sorcerers would play."
Another elder, a scarred gray tom, chimed in, his voice cold and flat. "We cannot risk the safety of the Grass Region for a weak, useless runt. Look at her. She can barely stand. What value could she possibly bring to our kingdom? She must be banished immediately."
Fear gripped Purrs’s throat, choking out any sound she tried to make. Memories of being kicked into the snow, of her mother's desperate final push to save her, flashed through her mind. If they threw her back into the freezing human world, she would die alone in the cold.
She could not let them abandon her. The word *useless* pierced her deeper than any winter wind, triggering a desperate, clawing need to prove her worth. She had to show them she had value, that she could be of service to this beautiful place.
Looking up, she saw Silverclaw wince in silent agony. His arthritic hind leg was trembling violently now, the joint swollen and hot beneath his silver fur. He was suffering, yet he stood tall to protect her, his massive body shielding her from the hostile glare of the council.
Instinct took over, wiping away her fear. Purrs scrambled forward on her tiny, clumsy legs, ignoring the gasps of the surrounding elders. She threw herself at Silverclaw's injured leg, desperate to help the only creature who had shown her kindness.
Pressing both of her tiny, white paws firmly against his swollen joint, she closed her eyes. She did not know how to use magic, but she knew the feeling of wanting to stop the pain. She wanted to give everything she had to make him hurt less, even if it emptied her own small body.
Deep within her chest, a spark ignited. A sudden, powerful surge of golden energy rushed down her spine, flowing straight through her paws and into Silverclaw's leg. It felt like liquid sunshine, bursting with the scent of fresh spring rain and blooming wildflowers.
Silverclaw gasped, his eyes widening in sheer shock as the swelling beneath his fur melted away instantly. The deep, grinding pain that had plagued him for seasons vanished, replaced by a soothing, vibrant warmth. He took a tentative step, his leg moving with a fluid grace he hadn't felt in years.
Purrs felt her own energy drain rapidly, a familiar, terrifying dizziness washing over her. She squeezed her eyes shut, pushing the last remnants of her warmth into his leg until she collapsed onto the stone floor, panting heavily. Her vision blurred, but she forced herself to stay conscious.
A hushed gasp rippled through the cathedral. Elders leaned so far over their stone ledges they nearly fell. Even the sleek black she-cat who had called her a spy stood frozen, her mouth slightly open in disbelief.
King Aurelius slowly stood from his altar-throne, his amber eyes locked onto the exhausted kitten. "Healing magic," he whispered, his voice echoing off the vaulted stone arches. "Pure, untainted restoration. Such a gift is practically unheard of in one so young."
He descended the stone steps, his paws making no sound on the polished marble. He stopped just inches from Purrs, lowering his majestic head to inspect her. "You have proven your heart, little one. You do not belong to the cold world of humans. You belong here, with us."
Purrs looked up, her heart swelling with a desperate, blooming hope. She wasn't going to be thrown away. She was wanted.
"I foresee a great path for you," Aurelius declared, his voice carrying the weight of a solemn prophecy. "A path where your soft touch will mend not just broken bones, but the very fractures of our world. You shall train to be a master healer of the Cat Academy."
Nervously, she flicked her tail, the exhaustion still heavy in her tiny bones. "But... I don't know how to control it. It just happened because I wanted to help him."
Control will come with time, Aurelius said softly, his whiskers twitching with a gentle, reassuring warmth. "Without proper guidance, your magic will consume you. You will give away too much of your own lifeforce."
Aurelius turned his gaze toward the shadows of the cathedral. "Moss, step forward."
Out from the dim corners of the ruined altar shuffled an old brown cat. His fur was patchy, looking like dried moss itself, and his left ear was torn. Yet, his eyes shone with a sharp, ancient intelligence.
"You called, Your Majesty?" Moss rasped, his voice sounding like dry leaves scraping across a stone patio.
"Take this kitten under your wing," Aurelius instructed. "Teach her to harness this gift. She must learn to heal without destroying herself in the process. The road ahead is dark, and we will need her light."
Moss trotted over to Purrs, sniffing her gently. A small, rare smile touched his whiskered face. "A stubborn one, aren't you? Giving away your own strength so easily. Come along, little spark. We have much work to do."
Understood by all was the weight of the King's words. Purrs looked at the old brown cat, her tiny chest puffing up with determination. "I will train. I will do whatever it takes to protect this home."
Purrs struggled to her feet, ready to follow her new mentor. But as she pulled her paws away from the floor, she noticed something strange.
Hovering just inches above the cold marble, the leftover golden light from her spell hadn't dissipated into the air. It pulsed with a strange, rhythmic heartbeat, drawing the gaze of everyone in the silent cathedral.
Silverclaw took a step back, his ears pinning against his head in sudden alarm. King Aurelius froze mid-stride, his gaze locking onto the shifting light with absolute dread. The golden light from Purrs's paws doesn't fade; instead, it morphs into a floating, ancient rune that none of the elders have seen in three hundred years.
