Chapter 2 of 39
Chapter 2: The Restoration Liquid
2.5k words
“Now let’s see what you can really do.”
Rian dipped the tip of the old metal spoon into the glowing green liquid.
The substance immediately clung to the spoon.
It wasn't like water.
It was far thicker, almost like honey, yet it flowed on its own. A faint green radiance spread across the surface of the metal.
Rian swallowed.
“If I die from this, at least I’ll die after discovering something interesting.”
Jojo meowed from atop the counter.
Rian glanced at him.
“Don’t look at me like that. You’re curious too, aren’t you?”
Jojo merely flicked his tail.
Rian sighed.
Before the liquid could touch his tongue—
HMMMM...
The antique trash can began to vibrate again.
Rian froze.
The green light inside pulsed faster.
Then something strange happened.
One of the drops clinging to the spoon broke free.
Plik.
The drop fell to the floor.
Jojo immediately turned toward it.
Rian watched as the tiny green droplet slowly trickled between the cracks in the floor.
Then—
Jojo jumped down.
“Hey!”
Rian hurried to stop him.
But Jojo had already licked the liquid.
Rian froze.
“JOJO!”
The orange cat stopped.
His entire body stiffened.
His eyes widened.
Then every strand of fur on his body stood on end.
WHOOSH!
Green light erupted from Jojo's body.
“What the hell?!”
Rian dropped the spoon.
Jojo rose several centimeters off the floor.
His small body was surrounded by swirling green light, like a miniature vortex.
Rian could only stare, mouth hanging open.
“Jojo...?”
The light grew brighter.
Then suddenly—
POOF!
Jojo dropped back onto the floor.
Silence.
Rian waited.
One second.
Two.
Three.
Jojo shook his head.
Then he calmly began licking his front paw as if nothing had happened.
Rian blinked.
“...Are you okay?”
He slowly exhaled in relief.
“Thank God.”
He had just reached down to pick up the cat when—
“I should be asking you that.”
Rian froze.
His hand stopped in midair.
His eyes slowly widened.
That voice...
It had come from directly in front of him.
Rian looked to the right.
Nobody.
He looked to the left.
Nothing.
Then he looked down.
Jojo was staring directly at him.
Man and cat stared at each other.
Rian's face slowly went pale.
“...Jojo?”
Jojo tilted his head.
“Yes?”
The spoon that had been lying near Rian's foot slipped completely from his grasp.
Clink!
Rian stumbled backward.
“No.”
Jojo blinked.
“No?”
“No way.”
“If you mean to say that I cannot speak, then I’m afraid I have to disappoint you.”
Rian pointed at Jojo with a trembling finger.
“You...”
“Yes.”
“You...”
“Yes.”
“You can talk?!”
Jojo yawned.
“Apparently.”
Rian grabbed his head.
“No. No, no, no.”
He paced back and forth.
“First, an enchanted trash can.”
He pointed toward the antique container.
“Then a glowing green liquid.”
He pointed at Jojo.
“And now my cat can talk.”
He stopped.
“This has to be a dream.”
Jojo sat down and began grooming his paw.
“If this is a dream, I suggest you get more sleep.”
Rian stared at him.
“Did you just tell me to sleep?”
“Technically, yes.”
Rian rubbed his face.
“You’re actually talking.”
“So it would seem.”
“And you can understand everything I say?”
“Not everything.”
Jojo paused.
“But considerably more than before.”
Rian stared at him.
The cat's eyes looked different now.
Sharper.
More aware.
Almost intelligent in a way that made Rian vaguely uncomfortable.
“So... the liquid did this to you?”
“Most likely.”
“And maybe...”
Rian looked over Jojo's body.
There was no obvious physical transformation.
But his eyes were different.
More focused.
More conscious.
Almost...
Human.
Jojo raised his tail.
“I don't yet understand the limits of this ability.”
Rian swallowed.
“This is insane.”
Jojo nodded.
“Agreed.”
Rian looked at the spoon on the floor.
A faint trace of green liquid still shimmered on its surface.
If a single drop had been enough to cause such a change in Jojo...
What would happen if he drank it?
Jojo stared at the spoon.
Then at Rian.
“Proceed, Rian.”
Jojo's voice was deep.
Far too deep.
Far too clear.
Far too knowing for a house cat.
Rian stood frozen.
The orange tabby sat regally atop the kitchen counter, watching him with intelligent, unblinking eyes.
Its tail moved slowly, deliberately.
Rian's heart hammered against his ribs.
Was this a dream?
A hallucination caused by sleep deprivation and an empty stomach?
His mind reeled.
A talking cat.
A trash can that could transform garbage into a glowing liquid.
And now...
That liquid appeared capable of altering living creatures.
It defied every law of physics, biology, and common sense he had ever known.
Yet the evidence was right in front of him.
Real.
Impossible.
Undeniable.
Poverty had carved itself deep into Rian's life.
It was a cold, relentless companion that never left him alone, whispering doubts into his ear and tightening its grip with every unpaid bill and every growling stomach.
He remembered the gnawing hunger.
The humiliation of borrowing money.
The suffocating fear that one day he would have nothing left.
This wasn't merely about money.
It was about survival.
And this liquid...
It felt like a door.
A door leading somewhere impossible.
A gateway into something he couldn't understand.
The thought of what the liquid might be capable of fought against his instinctive fear of the unknown.
All his life, Rian had been told to be practical.
To be careful.
Never take unnecessary risks.
But now, all those lessons seemed irrelevant.
The warm neon glow shimmered inside the container, reflecting in his wide, bewildered eyes.
The air around the trash can felt charged, almost vibrating with invisible energy.
Rian could feel an inexplicable pull.
Almost magnetic.
Something was drawing him toward the emerald glow.
The liquid promised something.
Power?
Wealth?
A way to finally escape the poverty that had haunted him his entire life?
Jojo lifted his head.
“Hesitation only leads to stagnation.”
His deep voice resonated through the tiny kitchen.
“Fortune favors the bold, Rian.”
Jojo paused.
“In this case, a dehydrated human.”
Rian stared at him.
“Did you just make a joke?”
“I am attempting to understand human humor.”
“Don't.”
“Why?”
“I don't know. It’s weird hearing a cat do that.”
For the first time since this whole nightmare had begun, the tension in Rian's body eased slightly.
Then he looked back at the liquid.
A sudden surge of reckless courage flared within him.
What did he really have to lose?
His life was already a tightrope stretched over an abyss of debt and despair.
At least this offered him a chance.
A ridiculously small chance.
A fluorescent one.
Rian drew a deep breath.
The scent of earth, ozone, and something faintly sweet filled his lungs.
His fingers trembled as he reached for an old, bent dessert spoon.
It was another relic from the garage-sale junk he'd collected over the years, just like most of his possessions.
He dipped the spoon into the liquid.
The substance clung to the metal.
It shimmered.
For a moment, it seemed to defy gravity.
Then a single, perfect drop slipped from the spoon and fell back into the glowing depths.
Rian watched it disappear.
The liquid felt warm.
Strange, but comforting.
Its scent reminded him of something ancient and alive.
A forest after rain.
With a peculiar sweetness underneath.
Rian held his breath.
He closed his eyes.
It felt like surrendering himself to fate.
Then—
The first drop touched his tongue.
Rian waited for bitterness.
For a metallic taste.
Perhaps something chemical.
But there was none.
Instead, it tasted overwhelmingly sweet.
Pure.
Almost like sunlight had been turned into liquid.
The flavor disappeared almost instantly.
It was replaced by an intense heat spreading through his body.
The heat ignited in his throat.
It traveled down his esophagus and settled deep in his stomach.
Rian gasped.
“Ugh!”
The heat didn't hurt.
Instead, it felt like an overwhelming surge of energy.
Warmth spread through his entire body like molten gold coursing through his veins.
His muscles tightened.
Then relaxed.
Then tightened again with unfamiliar strength.
A strange sensation crawled beneath his skin.
It felt as though thousands of tiny hands were reshaping his body from within.
His vision blurred.
Colors twisted together like a kaleidoscope.
Then—
Everything snapped into focus.
Energy exploded through his body.
A tidal wave of pure vitality.
The chronic exhaustion that had been his constant companion for years—
The dull ache in his bones.
The heaviness in his steps.
The fog clouding his thoughts.
All of it vanished.
As though it had never existed.
Rian gasped.
He drew a deep breath.
His chest expanded with a strength he had never felt before.
His shoulders broadened.
His thin T-shirt suddenly felt tight.
His abdominal muscles clenched.
His arms felt heavier.
Thicker.
The veins around his wrists became clearly visible.
Every inch of his body hummed with energy like an electric current.
He could feel every individual muscle fiber.
Tight.
Ready.
Powerful.
Rian felt strong.
Incredibly strong.
When he opened his eyes, the spoon slipped from his hand.
Clink!
It hit the floor.
He didn't care.
He stared at his arms.
The skinny body he'd known all his life had changed.
His once-fragile arms were now replaced by firm, sculpted biceps.
Veins he had never seen before traced blue lines beneath his sun-kissed skin.
His eyes were drawn to the mirror on the opposite wall.
Rian walked toward it.
His steps felt light.
Powerful.
Strangely agile.
Then he stopped.
A stranger stared back at him.
Impossible.
His usually gaunt face was sharper now.
More defined.
His jawline was stronger.
His cheekbones stood out beneath the dim kitchen light.
His eyes, once clouded by worry and exhaustion, now burned with a sharp intensity that almost resembled a predator's gaze.
His once-loose T-shirt stretched tightly across his newly developed chest.
And beneath it, he could clearly see the outline of abdominal muscles.
A six-pack.
Something he'd previously only seen in magazines or on television.
This wasn't merely a physical improvement.
It was a complete transformation.
A metamorphosis.
His frail body had become strong and powerful.
Rian's fear disappeared.
In its place came an almost delirious excitement.
He clenched his fists.
The muscles in his forearms felt like stone.
He flexed his biceps.
It was hard as granite.
“Damn...”
Rian laughed.
He had never felt this alive.
It felt as though he could lift a car.
Run a marathon.
Maybe even conquer the world with his bare hands.
Possibilities raced through his mind.
Jojo watched him.
“Efficient.”
The cat's deep voice broke the silence.
“Rapid cellular restructuring.”
Jojo studied Rian from atop the counter.
“Remarkable. Your metabolism has been... optimized.”
Rian turned toward him.
“You know what's happening?”
“Not completely.”
“Then why do you sound like a scientist?”
“I am merely describing what I can understand.”
Rian rubbed his face.
“This keeps getting stranger.”
Jojo shrugged.
“At least you no longer look like a walking corpse.”
Rian stared at him.
Then he laughed.
A genuine laugh.
A wide smile spread across his face.
A smile he hadn't worn in years.
He felt like a completely new man.
His body was filled with energy that demanded to be released.
Rian clenched his fist.
He threw a light punch into the air.
Whoosh!
A small gust of wind followed it.
Rian froze.
“...I barely put any strength into that.”
Jojo nodded.
“Don't try punching the wall.”
“Why?”
“You may regret it.”
Rian looked at his fist.
“Fair point.”
Then something caught his attention.
A small potted basil plant sat on the kitchen counter.
Its leaves were wilted and brown.
Rian had bought it several weeks ago, intending to grow fresh herbs.
But the plant had suffered the same fate as most of his ambitions.
It had withered from neglect.
A tiny testament to his broken life.
Rian stepped closer.
“Poor thing.”
Then—
Plik.
A tiny drop of green liquid fell from the counter.
When he had dropped the spoon earlier, some of the liquid must have splashed onto the surface.
The droplet landed directly on one of the basil's dry leaves.
Rian froze.
The leaf moved.
At first, barely noticeably.
Then—
Green veins appeared.
The brown edges slowly disappeared.
A vibrant green spread outward from the point where the droplet had landed.
Fast.
Far too fast.
Within seconds, the once-wilted leaf had become fresh and green.
Rian leaned closer.
“No way...”
Another leaf moved.
The stem straightened.
The small pot began to vibrate.
Krrrr...
A low sound emerged from the plant.
Almost like a growl.
Rian's eyes widened.
His newly enhanced senses detected something he had never noticed before.
The faint vibrations running through the counter.
The movement of the roots.
Even the subtle sounds of plant tissue forming.
Then the sound grew louder.
Crack.
The basil stem thickened.
It stretched upward.
Crack.
The leaves expanded.
What had once been smaller than Rian's fingernail now stretched outward.
Wider.
Darker.
Thicker.
The plant wasn't merely growing.
It was exploding with growth.
Crack! Crack!
New leaves emerged one after another.
The growth itself became audible.
Tiny sounds from newly forming tissue.
The rustling of leaves opening.
The stretching of the stem.
Roots began bursting through the bottom of the terracotta pot.
They clawed into the countertop as though desperately searching for additional nutrients.
The leaves continued to unfurl.
Bigger.
Thicker.
Greener.
One leaf became the size of a dinner plate.
Then another.
Then a third.
The tiny basil plant that had nearly died had transformed into a massive, rapidly growing plant.
One enormous leaf stretched toward the window.
Another pressed against the glass.
A giant green shadow spread across the kitchen.
Rian could only stare.
The plant kept growing.
A massive green canopy now filled much of his tiny kitchen.
Its leaves pressed against the window, threatening to crack the glass.
Rian swallowed.
“...Is that basil?”
Jojo studied the enormous plant.
Then looked at Rian.
“Technically.”
Rian pointed at the giant plant.
“Technically?!”
Jojo flicked his tail.
“It's still basil.”
Rian stared at the plant.
Then at the antique trash can.
Then back at Jojo.
A smile slowly appeared on his face.
This time, it wasn't born from confusion.
It wasn't desperation.
It was realization.
The liquid wasn't merely something that could satisfy hunger.
It could transform a human body.
It could alter an animal.
It could restore a dying plant.
And if he could truly understand how this thing worked...
His life would never be the same again.
Rian looked at the electricity bill still lying on the counter.
The red numbers no longer seemed quite as frightening.
He smiled.
“Jojo.”
“Hmm?”
“I think we just found a gold mine.”
Jojo stared at him with a flat expression.
“Don't sell it too quickly.”
Rian frowned.
“Why?”
“Because you don't even know what that thing actually is.”
Rian fell silent.
Jojo was right.
They had discovered something far greater than either of them could understand.
And for the first time, Rian realized—
The antique trash can might not have been an ordinary secondhand purchase after all.
Maybe the strange object had been waiting for him.
And maybe...
The biggest change of his life had only just begun.
