Chapter 11: A Promise Unkept

1.3k words

A chill lingered in the air, a ghost of the evening breeze that had swept through her apartment hours ago. Rita traced the edge of the black-and-white photograph, the one Noah had sent. Her own face stared back, unguarded, vulnerable. It was an image Alexis had never captured, never even noticed. A knot tightened in her stomach. He saw something in her, something she usually kept locked away. And that was terrifying. She tucked the photo into a drawer, beneath a stack of old medical journals. Out of sight, but not out of mind. The unsettling image pulsed behind her eyelids. Saturday. Their long-planned date night. Alexis had promised. They would try that new Italian place, the one with the truffle pasta Rita had been dying to taste. A small, perfect pocket of time, just for them. She’d even picked out an outfit, a sleek black dress that made her feel confident, put-together. Anticipation hummed beneath her skin. Rita had spent the afternoon at the clinic, her mind half on her patients, half on the evening ahead. Dr. Chen had asked about her plans, a knowing smile on her face. Rita had simply nodded, a blush rising. Stability. Predictability. That was the comfort Alexis offered. Late afternoon bled into early evening. Rita started preparing a light dinner, something simple, knowing they would be heading out soon. The scent of roasted vegetables filled the kitchen. She checked her phone. No message from Alexis. He was probably still tied up at work, but he always called to confirm their plans. Her fingers drummed against the countertop. A prickle of unease started to spread. This wasn't like him, not entirely. He was usually so meticulous about their schedule, almost as much as she was. Almost. Finally, her phone vibrated. A text from Alexis. Her heart gave a little skip. She opened it. 'Hey, babe. So sorry, but work is insane tonight. Huge project just landed, going to be here late for the next few nights. Can't make dinner. Raincheck?' The words swam before her eyes. Raincheck. He hadn't even called. Just a text. A casual dismissal of something they’d discussed for weeks. Her shoulders slumped. The air left her lungs in a slow, silent exhale. Disappointment, sharp and sudden, pierced through her. Not just disappointment for the cancelled meal, but a deeper, more familiar ache. The sensation of being an afterthought. It was a cold, unwelcome guest, reminding her of other times, other promises that had quietly faded away. Her meticulously ordered life felt a fraction less stable. A small crack in the carefully constructed façade. She had been looking forward to this. Their time together. It wasn't just a dinner; it was a reaffirmation. A quiet assurance that she mattered, that their connection was paramount. Alexis's casual tone echoed in her head.
