Chapter 25: Drowning in the Red Tape

Cold, viscous liquid lapped relentlessly at Elias's collarbone. Sloshing sounds echoed off the damp stone walls as Jasper struggled to find footing beside him. "This is worse than a ninety-hour workweek under a micromanaging boss," Jasper grunted, his deep voice vibrating through the rising tide. Dark S-tier energy, usually so quick to answer his call, barely coated his massive knuckles before dissolving into the murky water. Ancient runes carved along the chamber walls pulsed with a sickening, pale blue light. Magic-dampening fluid. It was designed specifically to neutralize high-tier entities, draining their mana reserves like a leaking car battery. "Keep your head up," Elias warned, his dirty-blonde hair plastered to his forehead by the greasy residue. Golden light flickered weakly from his fingertips, but it died almost the instant it touched the damp air. Their S-Tier powers were being systematically siphoned away, leaving them raw and vulnerable. Every single second spent in this pool felt like having their very souls drained by a corporate parasite. "I can't feel my toes anymore," Jasper muttered, spitting out a mouthful of the bitter fluid. "Hypothermia will set in before we even drown if we don't find a way out," Elias calculated aloud, his analytical mind racing through potential escape routes. But the vault door was a solid foot of reinforced steel. It was sealed by ancient dwarven locks that required a massive physical key or an absurd amount of destructive force. With their magic practically locked down, they were just two ordinary guys trapped in a giant stone blender. "We survived the corporate grindstone," Elias said, his voice dropping to a dangerous quiet. "We are not dying in a glorified well." --- Heavy grinding noises suddenly rumbled from the ceiling. Cracks spiderwebbed across the ancient stone slabs directly above them. Dust and heavy pebbles rained down, splashing violently into the rising pool. "Ceiling is giving out," Jasper muttered, shifting his massive weight to shield Elias. Water reached their chest level now, freezing cold and smelling of ancient sulfur. Suddenly, a deafening crack echoed through the chamber. A massive block of granite sheared off the ceiling, hurtling directly toward Elias's head. Moving with pure instinct, Jasper lunged forward. His massive, towering frame intercepted the falling stone. A dull, sickening thud echoed through the chamber as the granite slammed into Jasper's broad back. Jasper groaned, a harsh gasp of pain tearing from his throat as he pinned Elias beneath his body, absorbing the entire brunt of the impact. Blood dripped from Jasper's split lip, mixing with the rising water. "Jasper!" Elias yelled, his cool demeanor shattering as he tried to shove the weight off his friend. "Shut up and stay down," Jasper wheezed, his muscles bulging as he held the heavy stone slab off Elias's head. Water was at their chins now, leaving only inches of breathing room. "I am not letting you die here," Elias hissed, his teeth chattering from the cold and sheer panic. "We survived three years under that tyrannical CEO," Jasper grunted, his arms trembling under the crushing weight. "I'm not letting some magical trap lay us off permanently." He coughed, a spray of red staining the pale stone. His massive shoulders shook, but his grip never faltered. Even without his S-Tier dark magic, Jasper's physical strength was monstrous, a testament to his sheer willpower. But physical strength had its limits. Weight of the collapsed ceiling was slowly crushing him into the rising pool. "Elias," Jasper gasped, his voice cracking. "If I don't make it... find that dwarven tavern we talked about. Drink a pint for me." "Shut up," Elias snapped, his blue eyes flashing with cold, calculated rage. "We are going together. No one gets left behind. Especially not the only guy who knows how to properly pour a draft beer." --- Desperation sparked a memory in Elias's analytical mind. High school physics had taught him about closed systems and thermal expansion. If they couldn't blast the door open with raw magic, they would use thermodynamics. "Jasper, hold on to me," Elias commanded, his eyes flashing with sudden intensity. Gathering every single scrap of his remaining Light magic, Elias didn't try to form a blade or a shield. He focused all of his S-Tier energy into pure, concentrated thermal heat. White-hot light erupted from his hands, plunging directly into the cold water. Bubbles immediately began to hiss and boil around them. Steam rose rapidly, filling the tiny remaining pocket of air with scalding vapor. "Hold your breath!" Elias roared through the rising mist. Jasper clamped his jaw shut, wrapping his massive arms around Elias to lock them together as the water temperature skyrocketed. Pressure built within the sealed vault at an alarming rate. High-pressure steam hissed violently against the reinforced steel vault door. Metal groaned under the intense physical strain. Screws popped like bullets, ricocheting off the stone walls. Finally, the vault door gave way with a thunderous explosion. A massive geyser of boiling water and steam blasted outward. Swept up in the violent torrent, Elias and Jasper were shot out of the chamber. Tumbled and tossed through ancient, subterranean drainage pipes, they fought to keep their heads above the rushing current. Light suddenly blinded them as they were ejected from the pipe, tumbling down a steep sandy slope. --- Gravel and dry sand scraped against Elias's skin as he rolled to a stop. He coughed violently, hacking up mouthfuls of warm, sandy water. Beside him, Jasper lay on his back, staring up at the sky, his chest heaving as he let out a ragged laugh. "We're alive," Jasper wheezed, wiping a mixture of blood and sand from his face. "Barely," Elias groaned, pushing himself up onto his elbows. His dirty-blonde hair was a matted mess, and his clothes were shredded, but his eyes were sharper than ever. They had defied the trap designed to execute them. They had beaten the system once again. "Those bastards in the High Arbiters really don't want us to retire," Jasper muttered, sitting up with a painful wince. "They want us to fight each other," Elias said, his voice hardening. "They want us to play our roles in their stupid prophecy." "Screw their prophecy," Jasper spat, clenching his fists. "If they want a fight, we'll give them one. But it won't be with each other." Standing up, they shook the sand from their boots, their resolve to defy their destiny stronger than ever. But their brief moment of triumph vanished instantly. Looking up, Elias froze. Standing in the desert dunes, they see the sky above Ironreach burning with a massive, golden divine barrier—the High Arbiters have launched a full-scale invasion of their sanctuary.
