Chapter 2: Sweetness and Venom

The knock came again, firmer this time, and a voice, rich and melodic, called, "Hello? Anyone home?" Jamie glances at Sarah, whose eyes are wide with curiosity. He feels a quick, nervous flutter in his stomach. He still thinks about the dark shape behind the lace curtains downstairs, the feeling of being watched. He steps towards the door, Sarah right behind him, her hand warm against his back. He pulls the door open.
Two women stand on their small landing. They aren't what Jamie expected. Not old, not stern. Not even vaguely threatening in the way his mind had conjured a moment before. Instead, they are radiant. The first, tall and slender, with an elegant sweep of auburn hair pulled back from a striking, angular face, smiles. Her lips are a perfect, deep rose. This must be Lila. Her dress, a flowing silk in a shade of emerald green, shimmers in the afternoon light filtering through the hallway window. Her poise is almost unnatural, like she's posing for a photograph. Next to her, a shorter woman with a vibrant energy, her dark curls bouncing around a heart-shaped face. This must be Anya. She wears a bright, floral sundress that highlights her playful, wide grin. Both of them carry a warmth that feels immediate, intense, and somehow, manufactured. It’s too much, too bright, too welcoming. Jamie feels a strange chill despite their beaming faces.
"Oh, hello!" Lila's voice is smooth, like polished stone. "You must be Jamie and Sarah! We've been waiting for you." The words hang in the air, a silken cord wrapping around them. Jamie remembers the disembodied voice from yesterday. It was hers. His gut tightens. Sarah, however, brightens instantly, her earlier apprehension dissolving under the onslaught of their charm. She steps forward, a shy smile gracing her lips. "That's us!" she says, her voice a little breathless.
Anya's gaze, dark and sparkling, sweeps over Sarah, settling on the simple, pale blue sundress she's wearing. It's nothing fancy, just a comfortable piece Sarah threw on after unpacking. Yet, Anya's eyes seem to transform it into something extraordinary. "Oh, my dear," Anya breathes, her voice a purr, "that dress on you. It's absolutely divine. The way it drapes, the color against your skin... you look like a dream." Her words are a lavish compliment, delivered with such intense admiration that Sarah's cheeks flush a deep, becoming red. She instinctively smooths a hand over the fabric, surprised and flattered. Jamie feels a sharp, unexpected prickle of protectiveness. It's silly, he knows. They're just being friendly. But the way Anya's eyes linger on Sarah's bare shoulder, a little too long, a little too possessive, makes a cold knot form in his stomach.
"Thank you!" Sarah giggles, genuinely pleased. "It's just an old thing, really." She turns slightly, unconsciously exposing more of her shoulder as she gestures to the apartment behind her. "We're still getting everything unpacked." Anya’s smile widens, her eyes still fixed on Sarah. "Nonsense. Some people just have a way of making anything look spectacular. And you, my dear, are one of them." Lila steps forward, her elegant hand extending towards Sarah. "I'm Lila, and this is Anya," she says, her voice softer, but her grip on Sarah's hand surprisingly firm. "We live downstairs. We just wanted to welcome you to the building." Jamie shifts his weight, feeling awkward, almost invisible. He clears his throat. "Jamie," he offers, extending his hand to Lila. She takes it, her fingers cool and smooth against his, her smile never wavering, but her gaze quickly flickers back to Sarah. It's a quick, dismissive gesture, and it stings.
Lila's unreadable gaze sweeps past Jamie, taking in their barely furnished apartment. The stack of boxes in the living room, the bare walls, the single worn sofa they'd managed to haul up the stairs. She doesn't comment, but her eyes seem to take inventory, evaluating every item, every empty space. Her silence is more unnerving than any spoken criticism. Jamie feels a sudden, acute embarrassment about their sparse belongings, their youthful optimism that had yet to fill these rooms. He wants to say something, to explain that they've only just arrived, that it will look better soon. But the words catch in his throat.
"It's... cozy," Lila finally says, her voice flat, devoid of real warmth. It feels like a judgment. She turns back to Sarah, a bright, interested expression snapping into place. "So, Sarah, what brings you two to our quiet little corner of the city? Are you studying? Working?" Her questions come with an almost surgical precision, delving into Sarah's life with an intensity that makes Jamie uncomfortable. He tries to interject, to steer the conversation to something more neutral. "We're just out of high school, looking for a fresh start," he offers, but Lila barely acknowledges him, her attention fixed entirely on Sarah.
"Oh, how exciting!" Anya chimes in, leaning closer to Sarah, a conspiratorial glint in her eyes. "A whole new chapter. What are your passions? Do you have any creative outlets?" Sarah, clearly flattered by the undivided attention, starts to talk about her love for drawing, her dreams of perhaps going to art school one day. Jamie watches as Anya nods, her lips curving into a knowing smile, her eyes sparkling with an almost predatory interest. He clears his throat again, a little louder this time. "Sarah's really talented," he says, trying to pull the spotlight back, to remind them he's here too. Lila simply gives him a polite, almost pitying glance, before returning her focus to Sarah, asking about specific mediums and styles. He feels a wave of frustration, a strange, suffocating feeling. It's like they're deliberately talking around him, through him. He's just scenery.
After another ten minutes of what feels to Jamie like an interrogation masquerading as a friendly chat, Lila declares, "Well, we mustn't keep you from your unpacking. So lovely to finally meet you both." She gives Sarah another firm hand squeeze. Anya blows a kiss to Sarah, a playful wink, and then they are gone, their bright presence receding down the stairs, leaving behind a silence that feels heavier than before. Jamie closes the door, leaning against it, a sigh escaping his lips. "Wow," he says, turning to Sarah. "They were... a lot." Sarah is still glowing, a dreamy smile on her face. "They were so nice, Jamie! And she loved my dress!"
Jamie watches her, a familiar ache starting in his chest. He wants to reconnect with her, to remind them both of their own, private world. "Come here," he murmurs, pulling her gently towards their bedroom. The bed is unmade, clothes spilling from an open suitcase. He pushes the clutter aside, drawing her down onto the soft mattress. He kisses her, slow and deep, trying to lose himself in the familiar comfort of her lips, her scent. He fumbles with the buttons of her sundress, his hands trembling slightly. He wants to be everything for her, to erase the lingering sense of unease. He wants to feel powerful, desired. Sarah responds, her breath hitching, her body warm against his. He moves over her, trying to be strong, dominant, to mirror the intensity he'd sensed from the women downstairs. But his movements are hesitant, his touch too soft. He enters her, and it's over quickly, a rush of sensation that leaves him vaguely unsatisfied. He collapses beside her, breath heavy. Sarah lies still for a moment, then rolls onto her side, facing away from him. He knows, without her saying a word, that she's not satisfied. He feels the familiar sting of inadequacy, a quiet shame creeping in. His penis, already feeling small and insignificant, seems to shrivel further. He wishes he could be rougher, more demanding, like he imagined a man should be. He wishes he knew how to make her truly gasp. He reaches for her hand, but she pulls it away, mumbling something about needing to finish unpacking. He closes his eyes, a hollow feeling spreading through him.
The afternoon sunlight begins to fade, painting the apartment in long, golden streaks. Jamie is trying to assemble a bookshelf, the instructions a frustrating tangle of diagrams. Sarah is humming softly in the other room, sorting through their kitchen boxes. A sudden, sharp rap on their door makes him jump, dropping a bag of screws. He glances at his watch. It's almost six. He walks to the door, a fresh wave of irritation bubbling up. He pulls it open, and Lila stands there, radiant as before, but with a new, almost expectant glint in her eyes. Her smile, while radiant, holds a glint that suggests a deeper, calculating intelligence as she offers, "We're having a small housewarming gathering tonight. Just us and a few friends. You simply must come."
