Dust swirled through the shafts of afternoon sunlight, painting golden streaks across the worn wooden floors of the Seishin Academy dojo. Air inside the hall tasted of salt, old canvas, and years of desperate effort. Heavy wooden beams overhead creaked under the weight of the oppressive summer heat, trapping the warmth inside the cavernous space.
Sweat dripped from Noburu’s chin, splashing onto the blue tatami mat beneath his bare feet. Standing at a striking one hundred and ninety centimeters, his broad shoulders and hard-won muscle marked him as one of the academy's elite. Strands of bright blonde hair fell over his forehead, sticking to his temples as he watched the center of the training floor with growing intensity.
Seishin Academy was a place of strict discipline, but today, it felt like a lawless arena. Beneath the high, arched windows, the atmosphere had grown completely silent, the usual chatter of students replaced by a tense, suffocating dread.
Kenji, his childhood best friend, was currently gasping for breath in the middle of the ring. Opposite him stood a literal giant, a figure of pure intimidation who had turned a simple sparring match into a public execution.
Towering at an imposing two meters, Nao Sen dominated the space with an arrogant, crushing aura. Shocking blue hair fell in messy spikes around his face, framing a jagged white scar that cut vertically through his left eye. Instead of the standard white gi of the school, he wore black trousers and a sleeveless top that exposed massive, scarred arms that looked like they had been forged from iron.
Cruelty lived in the curve of Nao's mouth. To Nao, everyone else on these mats was nothing more than an insect waiting to be crushed beneath his heavy heel.
Noburu clenched his fists so hard his knuckles turned white beneath his hand wraps. For months, Nao had terrorized the younger students, but today he had singled out Kenji, knowing it would provoke Noburu.
Their history of rivalry was well known, but Nao had never crossed the line into outright physical malice quite like this. Noburu felt a cold sweat break out across his neck as he watched Nao circle his friend.
"Move, Kenji!" Noburu called out, his voice low and urgent, cutting through the heavy silence of the room.
His friend shifted his stance, his legs trembling from sheer exhaustion. This was supposed to be a standard, light sparring match to practice defensive blocks, but Nao had refused to let it end.
Nao had turned it into a slow, agonizing hunt. Taking a heavy step forward, Nao cast a long shadow over his smaller opponent, his scarred eye gleaming with sadistic pleasure.
A mocking grin spread across his face, revealing sharp teeth.
"Is this all the Seishin style has to offer?" Nao sneered, his voice a deep, gravelly rumble that vibrated through the floorboards. "You're moving like a turtle, little man."
Without warning, Nao lunged forward. An explosive punch blurred through the air, striking Kenji squarely in the solar plexus.
Air rushed out of Kenji's lungs in a violent gasp. He folded forward, dropping to his knees on the hard mat, unable to breathe.
Clutching his stomach, Kenji's face turned a dangerous shade of purple as he struggled to draw oxygen.
Noburu moved toward the edge of the mat, his heart hammering against his ribs in a torrent of protective panic.
"Match is over! He's down!" Noburu shouted, taking a decisive step onto the training mat.
Nao didn't step back. Staring down at the kneeling boy, Nao's eyes filled with a look of pure, unadulterated disgust.
Slowly, deliberately, Nao raised his heavy bare foot. He brought it down directly onto Kenji's outstretched left hand, which was resting on the mat for support.
A sickening crunch echoed through the silent dojo.
Kenji let out a high-pitched, agonizing scream that tore through the air, a sound of absolute pain that made the other students turn their eyes away.
Bones popped and snapped under the immense weight of the two-meter giant. Nao didn't just step on the fingers; he ground his heel down, twisting his foot to maximize the damage.
"Oops," Nao whispered, though his eyes gleamed with sadistic joy. "My foot slipped."
Rage, hot and blinding, erupted in Noburu’s chest. Before anyone else could react, Noburu vaulted over the wooden partition.
His large frame moved with explosive speed. Crossing the distance in a fraction of a second, he shoved his way past the paralyzed spectators who stood frozen in terror.
"Get off him!" Noburu roared, his voice shaking the dust from the rafters.
Nao slowly lifted his foot, looking entirely unbothered by the fury radiating from the blonde giant. He took a half-step back, kicking Kenji's trembling, broken hand out of the way as if it were a piece of trash.
Kenji curled into a fetal position, sobbing and clutching his mangled, bleeding fingers to his chest.
Noburu dropped to one knee, checking his friend's hand. Three fingers were bent at unnatural, horrifying angles, already swelling to a dark, angry purple.
"Hang on, Kenji," Noburu muttered, his voice trembling with a mixture of grief and fury. He signaled the nearest students. "Get the medical kit! Now!"
Standing up, Noburu turned his full attention to Nao Sen. He stood at his full height of 1.90 meters, but he still had to look up slightly to meet the blue-haired monster's gaze.
Close up, the sheer pressure of Nao's presence was suffocating. A heavy, protective dread settled in Noburu's gut as he realized Nao was a true psychopath, someone who genuinely enjoyed the sound of breaking bones.
"You did that on purpose," Noburu said, his voice dropping to a dangerous, icy whisper.
"What if I did?" Nao smirked, crossing his massive arms over his chest. "He was weak. Weakness is a disease in this dojo, golden boy."
"I'm just curing it."
Noburu's jaw clenched so hard his teeth ground together. Veins bulged along his neck, his knuckles burning beneath the tight canvas wraps.
Nao didn't wait for a response. He uncrossed his arms, his entire posture shifting into a lethal offensive stance.
With a sudden, explosive snap of his hips, Nao unleashed a devastating roundhouse kick. Its trajectory was aimed straight at Kenji's head, intending to silence the sobbing boy permanently.
Noburu didn't hesitate. Stepping forward, Noburu threw his left arm up, bracing his forearm to intercept the incoming strike.
Impact rang out through the dojo like a cracked bronze bell.
Shockwaves traveled up Noburu's arm, the sheer force of Nao's kick rattling the bones in his shoulder. Pain flared white-hot along his forearm, but Noburu didn't budge.
He stood his ground, his muscles locking like iron pillars as he held the massive leg at bay.
Nao's eyes widened slightly in surprise, then narrowed into a venomous slit. He leaned in, his face inches from Noburu's.
"You're next, golden boy," Nao sneered, his breath hot against Noburu's cheek.
Noburu's muscles coiled, his right fist pulling back, ready to launch a counter-strike that would shatter Nao's jaw. Every instinct he possessed screamed at him to tear this monster apart.
Just as Noburu prepares to counter, the head master steps between them, but Nao whispers a chilling promise into Noburu's ear: "Your pretty little friend Megumi is walking home alone tonight."
