The chasm roared, a sound less of wind and more of pure, guttural hunger. Below, where the Wyrm’s cold blast had carved Torvin into glittering dust, the hollow became a maelstrom. Daskal, Yulica, and Bramor, clinging to the dangling ropes, swung wildly as the Wyrm’s head, now fully extended, snaked towards them. Its single eye, a glacial orb, scanned for its next target.
“Hold!” Vayra’s voice cut through the chaos, raw with effort. Her ribs screamed with every movement, but she ignored the pain. “To the side, all of you! Get to cover!”
She gestured with her flint-knapped spear, its tip a razor-sharp shard of obsidian, towards the sheer rock face. Above, the remaining Fenrost and Vorn warriors, led by a newly hardened Grolm, scrambled to pull the ropes taut, trying to winch their leaders back to the surface. But the Wyrm was too fast.
Its neck, thick as an ancient fir tree, coiled and struck. Not at the ropes, but at the sheer rock wall just beside them. Ice-shards exploded, showering the air. A Vorn warrior, too slow to dodge, cried out as a jagged shard pierced his forearm, sending him reeling. The Wyrm’s scales, pale as hoarfrost, deflected the sun-spears of light struggling to pierce the gloom. Arrows, slung stones, and even a heavy mining pickaxe thrown by a Fenrost elder, merely glanced off its hide, leaving not a scratch.
“Useless!” Yulica bellowed, her own bone-tipped arrows shattering against the beast. “It’s armored like a mountain!”
The floor below Vayra’s group was a treacherous landscape of steaming fissures, hissing and spitting superheated water. One particularly volatile spout pulsed rhythmically, a column of white vapor erupting every few heartbeats.
Suddenly, the Wyrm twisted, its tail – a monstrous, barbed club – arcing through the air with terrifying speed. It whipped straight for Daskal, who, still unsteady on the ropes, fumbled with a discarded rock shard, limbs locking in panic.
Bramor reacted with the instinct of a seasoned vanguard. Without a word, he threw himself forward, shoving Daskal out of the path of the blow. The Wyrm’s tail connected with a sickening thud against Bramor’s side. A sharp crack echoed through the grotto, audible even over the roar of the scalding vents. Bramor’s body crumpled, a gasp tearing from his lips. He hung limp from his rope harness, ribs visibly contorted, a dark stain blossoming on his furs.
“Bramor!” Vayra’s own voice, usually so steady, cracked with a rare anguish. Her eyes, usually cold and calculating, showed a flicker of raw fear. Daskal, reeling from the impact of Bramor’s shove, stared at the vanguard captain, a new, cold rage building in his chest. Bramor, despite the pain, managed a weak, blood-flecked smile directed at Vayra, before his head lolled against his chest.
The Wyrm, sensing blood, shifted its attention to the vulnerable Bramor. Its head lowered, jaws slowly parting, the frigid air around its mouth beginning to shimmer.
Vayra knew, with a chilling certainty, that her time was running out. A sharp, internal pain flared, an icy claw twisting in her chest. She could feel the *Frost-Blight* tightening its grip, her very core becoming a block of ice. Cold seized her marrow, sparking a desperate, reckless gamble. Her blood, tainted by the *Blight*, was unnaturally cold. Colder than the beast itself. It was almost frozen, yet still fluid, a perfect conduit for frigid energy.
With a grimace, Vayra ripped a leather strap from her bracer. She pressed the sharp edge of her obsidian spear-tip against the palm of her hand. A thin, precise cut opened, and dark, sluggish blood welled up, unnaturally thick and viscous. It didn’t stream, it clung, almost congealing as it emerged. Instead of staining her skin crimson, it looked like liquid sapphire, shimmering with an internal, icy light. She quickly smeared the cold blood along the length of her spear, coating the obsidian tip and then twisting the weapon in her hands, letting the cold seep into the wood, hardening it, making it unnaturally rigid, almost crystalline.
“It will work,” she muttered, a savage glint in her eyes. “It has to.”
Above, Daskal, witnessing the brutal sacrifice and his mother’s grim ritual, snapped into action. He saw the Wyrm’s intent. “Matriarch!” he yelled, his voice surprisingly strong. “The mineral charge! The vent!”
Vayra nodded, already moving. She pulled a pouch from her belt, a small, treated leather bag containing the raw yellow powder she’d mixed. The air around her spear began to haze, a thin mist forming on its surface. She swung the spear in a wide arc, a silent challenge, then drove the butt of it hard into the rock beneath her. The impact vibrated through the Wyrm, causing it to hiss, its head snapping towards her.
“Over here, you glacier-spawn!” Vayra roared, her voice echoing. “Come and claim your prize!”
The Wyrm took the bait. Its cold, calculating eye fixed on Vayra, its hunger overriding caution. It coiled, then lunged, its massive body sliding with surprising speed towards her, square over the pulsing spout. The stone shuddered under its weight. Its jaws, lined with dagger-like fangs, opened wide, aiming for Vayra’s head.
Vayra didn't flinch. The moment the Wyrm’s head passed above the boiling vent, she hurled the sulfur charge with all her might. It struck square against the beast’s pale, armored flank, just above the opening. Before the Wyrm could react, Vayra drove her super-chilled spear-tip into a hairline fissure on its scales. The cold, infused by her *Blighted* blood, cracked the superficial ice. Then, with a fierce shout, she jammed her boot into the fissure, pushing with all her remaining strength, levering the spear just as the font erupted.
A blinding flash, followed by a deafening *THWOOM*! The sulfur, ignited by the sudden thermal shock of boiling water against absolute cold, detonated with the force of a small avalanche. Steam, superheated and charged with the smell of brimstone, enveloped the Wyrm. Its scales, already weakened by Vayra’s spear, fractured. The immense temperature differential, from boiling hot to absolute zero, ripped through its icy armor. Shards the size of shields exploded from its body, showering the depths in a violent hailstorm of ice and rock.
The Wyrm shrieked, a sound of agony that vibrated through the very stone. It thrashed wildly, its tail slamming against the cavern walls, sending tremors up to the surface. Its armored hide, once impenetrable, was now a shattered mess of exposed, writhing flesh beneath. It was wounded, truly wounded.
Vayra stumbled back, gasping, the blast having thrown her against the rock face. Her vision blurred, the icy grip in her chest now a crushing vise. The pain was beyond anything she had ever known, even in her previous life. Her legs gave out. She collapsed, her super-chilled spear clattering from her grasp. A final, agonizing lurch, and then a profound, cold stillness settled over her. The *Frost-Blight* had run its course. Her heart, a weary, defiant muscle, simply stopped beating.
Above, Daskal saw his mother fall. He didn't hesitate. Without thought for the enraged Wyrm still thrashing below, he slid down the rope, landing beside her. Her eyes were open, but lifeless, a thin layer of rime already forming on her lashes. He saw the faint, blue lines tracing up her neck, now reaching her jaw. He felt the cold emanating from her, a chill deeper than anything the Wyrm could produce. He knew what it meant. But a new strength, forged in fire and ice, surged through him. He wouldn't let it end like this. Not after everything. Not after Bramor.
He seized Vayra by her shoulders, shaking her hard. His voice, hoarse but determined, tore through the chaos of the wounded Wyrm’s roars.
“You don't get to rest yet, Matriarch!”
