Chapter 16: The Garden of Frozen Thorns

1.3k words

Cold air bit into Clara’s cheeks as she tumbled through the hatch, landing face-first in a pile of soft, frozen mulch. Dirt filled her mouth, tasting of ancient soil, rot, and bitter frost. Groaning, she shook her head, sending a shower of dark debris flying from her brown curls. Behind her, Jaxon landed with a sharp exhale, his heavy leather boots clicking sharply against a stone path. "Are you trying to kill us?" he hissed, dusting off his pristine blue robes with aggressive, jerky motions. His jaw was clenched so tightly that a muscle pulsed at his temple. Clara pulled her knees to her chest, her heart squeezing with a familiar, suffocating guilt. Once again, her clumsy limbs had dictated their fate. "I was only trying to help," she whispered, looking up through her messy bangs. "Help?" Jaxon scoffed, his eyes scanning the massive glass dome towering above them. "You broke a pressurized emergency lever. We fell twenty feet into an unknown chamber." Frost coated the towering glass panes overhead, blocking out the pale sky. Giant, skeletal trees and frozen shrubs crowded the edges of the pathway, casting long, jagged shadows across the floor. "But we have air now," Clara pointed out, offering a weak, tentative smile that she hoped looked encouraging. She scrambled to her feet, wiping her dirt-streaked palms on her tunic. "By sheer, mathematical absurdity," Jaxon muttered. He stepped past her, his boots crunching on the frozen gravel. "We are in some sort of ancient conservatory. Keep your hands to yourself." "Understood. Completely. Hands staying right here," she said, tucking them firmly into her armpits. She followed him closely, trying to step exactly where his boots left prints, determined not to trigger another disaster. Silence descended upon the frozen garden, heavy and suffocating. Strange, pale vines snaked across the path ahead, their thick stems pulsing with a faint, blue light that seemed to flicker in time with their footsteps. Jaxon stopped abruptly, throwing his arm out to bar her path. His brow furrowed as he stared at the frozen vegetation, his fingers tracing complex mathematical equations in the air. "What is it?" Clara asked, peering over his shoulder, holding her breath. Suddenly, a sharp rustling sound echoed through the frozen foliage. Thick, pale vines erupted from the mulch like striking serpents, their ends pointed and sharp. One shot directly toward Clara’s face, its tip glistening with a jagged, crystalline thorn. Jaxon reacted instantly, shoving her backward with a grunt. He raised his hands, chanting a precise, rhythmic formula in the ancient tongue. "Ignis elementum, contracta!" he shouted, his voice echoing off the glass dome. A bright, concentrated lance of orange flame burst from his fingertips. It struck the lead vine dead center, crackling with intense heat. Instead of burning, the vine absorbed the fire. Red heat rushed through its translucent skin, turning a deep, angry purple as it drank the magical energy. The plant swelled, growing three times its original size. "That is impossible," Jaxon gasped, his eyes widening. He stumbled back a step, his perfect calculations shattered. Dripping from the massive thorns of the swollen vine was a thick, pale blue liquid. It hissed as it hit the stone path, instantly freezing the stone into brittle shards. "Frost-venom," Clara whispered, her stomach turning. "Jaxon, I don't think it likes fire." "It is a thermodynamic inversion loop," Jaxon said, his voice cracking with rare panic. "The defense system of this fortress is designed to feed on active magical energy. My spell didn't burn it; it fed it!" More vines burst from the ground, locking them in. They swayed, their thorny tips pointing directly at Clara and Jaxon like spears. "Get behind me!" Jaxon commanded, his fingers tracing a defensive ward in the air, though his hands shook. "I can help!" Clara cried out. She hated being the useless one, the burden who always needed saving. Her family’s harsh words echoed in her mind, a phantom whip. *You only destroy things, Clara. You are a curse.* "No, you will only make it worse!" Jaxon yelled, his barrier cracking under a heavy strike from a vine. Determined to prove him wrong, Clara looked around for a weapon, any loose stone or broken pipe she could throw. She took a step backward, eyes wide and scanning the frozen brush. Her heel caught on a thick, hidden root. "Whoa—!" Losing her balance completely, Clara flailed her arms, spinning around in a desperate attempt to stay upright. She didn't. With a loud yelp, she plunged backward off the path, crashing headfirst into a dense patch of dormant, red-petaled flowers. These were fire-lilies, their frozen bulbs delicate and brittle. Under the crushing weight of Clara’s chaotic fall, dozens of the bulbs shattered instantly. An enormous, thick cloud of bright red and yellow pollen erupted into the air, completely enveloping her in a colorful mist. "Clara!" Jaxon shouted, distracted by the sudden explosion of dust. A vine seized the opportunity, lashing out and striking his magical barrier. The shield shattered into a thousand glowing shards. Residual sparks from his broken fire magic floated into the air, drifting lazily into the dense pollen cloud. "Get out of there!" Jaxon screamed, trying to reach her. Sparks met the volatile pollen. A deafening crack echoed through the conservatory. *Boom!* A miniature explosion ripped through the air, followed instantly by another. *Pop! Pop! Boom!* A chain reaction of bright, colorful blasts rolled across the garden like a wave of firecrackers. Heat and light flashed in rapid succession. Carnivorous vines, caught in the epicenter of the chemical reaction, shrieked a high-pitched, whistling sound as they were instantly incinerated. Jaxon threw himself to the ground, covering his head as hot air and ash washed over him. Silence returned to the greenhouse, broken only by the crackle of burning embers. Coughing violently, Jaxon pushed himself up. He looked toward the blast zone, dread pooling in his chest. "Clara?" A small, smoking crater lay in the middle of the path. Sitting right in the center of the blackened dirt was Clara. She was covered in soot, her hair sticking out in wild, static-charged directions, but she was completely, miraculously untouched. Not a single scratch marked her skin. "I think..." Clara coughed, a tiny puff of grey smoke escaping her lips. "...I neutralized them." Jaxon stared at her, utterly speechless. His logical mind scrambled to compute the sheer impossibility of what had just occurred. "You..." he started, pointing a shaking finger. "You tripped." "I slipped," Clara corrected defensively, brushing ash off her knees. "But it worked, didn't it?" "You destroyed an ancient, high-level magical ward by falling over," Jaxon whispered, his voice a mix of awe and sheer frustration. "See? I can be useful," Clara said, her heart swelling with a small, fragile sense of pride. She stood up, shaking her legs to get the dust off. A faint, rhythmic hum vibrated through the ground beneath her boots. Clara blinked, squinting through the drifting columns of smoke. A soft, blue glow caught her eye from the edge of the crater. Nestled deep within a cleft of ancient ice was a single, pristine flower made entirely of solid frost. It pulsed with a gentle, hypnotic light. She took a step toward it, drawn by an inexplicable, warm sensation in her chest. "Clara, don't touch anything else," Jaxon warned, his voice fading into the background. She couldn't look away. Through the smoke, Clara sees a beautiful, glowing ice flower that seems to be calling her name, its petals shifting to match her heartbeat.
