Chapter 41: Rhys's Fear

405 words

A blinding flash erupted from the Heart. Rhys shielded his eyes, the sudden light searing his vision even through the narrow gap in the broken wall. He blinked rapidly, his heart slamming against his ribs. What just happened? Had Atherton’s forces broken through? Was Oakhaven lost? Opening his eyes, he saw it. A shimmering, ethereal barrier pulsed around the manor, pushing back the encroaching shadows and the frantic, desperate attacks of Atherton’s men. It wasn't the crude, magical defenses he was familiar with. This was something raw, untamed, and terrifyingly beautiful. His gaze snapped to Elara. She stood at the center of the room, near the glowing pedestal, her body rigid. Her hands were outstretched, trembling, a faint light still clinging to her fingertips like static electricity. Her face was stark white, devoid of color, and her eyes, usually so vibrant, held a distant, almost vacant stare. He watched her sway, a silent tremor passing through her. She looked utterly spent, as if the very act of existing was too heavy a burden. The shield around Oakhaven flickered, losing some of its intensity, before settling into a steady, less brilliant hum. Fear, cold and sharp, pierced through Rhys. Not for Oakhaven, not for the Kincaid legacy, but for *her*. He had never seen power manifest like this, not even from the most seasoned practitioners. This wasn't learned magic; it was innate, primal. It was the Heart itself, responding to her. Elara was connected to it. Deeply. Inherently. He remembered the old stories, whispered tales of the Bloodline, of the guardians of Oakhaven. He had always dismissed them as myth, romanticized history. Now, seeing her, he knew they were horrifyingly real. Atherton's relentless assault intensified. The temporary reprieve offered by Elara’s shield was precisely that—temporary. The barrier would not hold forever. He could hear the desperate cries of Oakhaven’s defenders, the clang of steel, the growing proximity of the enemy. Rhys moved, pushing away from the wall, his mind racing. He had planned to use the chaos, to perhaps even use Elara’s connection to the Heart to his own advantage. He had envisioned himself, Rhys Kincaid, controlling the Heart, restoring his family's prestige, eclipsing Oakhaven forever. Now, all those ambitions felt hollow, distant. Irrelevant. He reached her, his hand grasping her arm. Her skin felt clammy, unnaturally cold. She didn't react, her gaze still fixed on the faintly glowing Heart. She seemed mesmerized, or perhaps, trapped.
