Screaming ripped through the early morning stillness, a sound raw with panic and fear. Elara jolted awake, her heart hammering against her ribs even before her mind registered the distant, metallic thrumming. The Kincaid estate’s sophisticated alarm system blared, a piercing shriek that cut through the air. This was no malfunction. This was an attack.
Flinging off her covers, Elara sprang from the bed. Her bare feet hit the cool floor, adrenaline already surging through her veins. A primal instinct, deeper than thought, pulled her toward the window.
Outside, the tranquil Oakhaven landscape was erupting into chaos.
Drones, dark and predatory, swarmed overhead. Their rotors sliced through the air with a menacing hum. Below them, armored vehicles barreled across the grounds, breaching the perimeter Rhys had fortified just days ago.
She saw figures spilling from the vehicles, moving with a practiced, aggressive efficiency. Each wore dark, tactical gear, their faces obscured by helmets. Atherton’s signature emblem, a stylized ‘A’, gleamed faintly on their shoulders.
This was it. Atherton had struck.
Fury ignited within Elara. Not just for her own safety, but for the people of Oakhaven, for the ancient energy source hidden beneath their feet. A fierce protectiveness gripped her.
Grabbing her phone, her fingers fumbled for Rhys’s contact. Her mind raced, piecing together the intelligence they’d gathered. The shadowy organization, the one backing Atherton, had finally made its move.
Rhys answered on the second ring, his voice tight with urgency. "Elara! Are you safe?"
"They’re here, Rhys. They're everywhere," she gasped, pressing her face closer to the window. One of the drones banked sharply, its sensor array scanning the main building.
"I see them. Kincaid security is mobilizing," Rhys replied, a low growl in his tone. "Sterling's resources are already in motion. Hold your position. Do not engage."
Instinctively, Elara knew she couldn't. A powerful, insistent thrumming began deep within her chest, a resonance that echoed the very earth beneath Oakhaven. It was the Heart.
It pulsed, desperate and vulnerable. Its silent call pulled at her, a magnetic force guiding her deeper into the structure, away from the safety Rhys commanded her to seek.
"I can't, Rhys. I feel it. They're after the Heart," she choked out, already pulling on the nearest clothes. "I have to go to it."
Rhys's breath hitched. "Elara, no! It's too dangerous. Let Kincaid handle this. We have protocols."
