Chapter 9 of 10

Into the Void

956 words

The grand hall howled. The obsidian lance lunged at Vashani’s back. But the world had other, grander horrors to unleash. The tearing sound above them became a thunderous crack, a cosmic drumbeat announcing doom. The domed ceiling of the Zirqani Atheneum, a marvel of ancient Zirqani architecture, exploded inward, showering the hall with dust and splintered stone. Where the roof had been, only a gaping maw remained, a wound in the sky. Through it, the execution zenith poured, not merely light, but a torrential, viscous blackness that seemed to have its own gravitational pull. Within that swirling void, monstrous shapes coalesced, formless and hungry, then solidified into shrieking Vell-shades, their barbed limbs flailing as they plummeted. They were legion, raining down on the panicked students and faculty like a plague. One, larger than the rest, with teeth like jagged obsidian shards, dove straight for Lord Vexan, ripping through his expensive robes. He shrieked, a sound of pure terror, as others followed. The entire Atheneum was being devoured from above. The lead prosecutor stumbled back, blood draining from his features. The dark filaments he had summoned writhed independently. They no longer obeyed. Instead, they recoiled from the encroaching Vell-shades, then twisted, sinuous and dark, around the prosecutor himself. He gasped, choking, as the tendrils tightened, binding his arms to his sides. “No! What is this? Untie me!” he shrieked, struggling against his own power, now a living cage. But the dark coils dragged him toward the gaping hole in the roof, toward the descending chaos. His screams echoed, a pathetic counterpoint to the roars of the Vell-shades and the groaning of the dying building, as he was dragged, kicking and flailing, up into the void, consumed by the same darkness he had sought to wield. At that instant, the obsidian spear struck. It slammed into the invisible ward that had manifested at Vashani’s back, a shimmering barrier of Karmic energy. The ward flared, absorbing the lethal impact, but the force of the blow still threw her off her feet, dragging Karsan with her. They skidded across the ancient stone floor, their wrists still bound by amber filament. “Nazien!” Vashani coughed, scrambling to her knees, looking toward her brother, who stood paralyzed, clutching the shattered artifact. He looked lost amidst the pandemonium, the descending creatures, the screaming faculty. “I’ve got him,” Karsan growled, his gaze burning with pale auric radiance as he surveyed the hall. He didn’t release her hand, didn’t even glance at her, his focus entirely on the chaotic threat. Vashani knew this was it. The stolen identity swap relic, the Sunken Skein, lay heavy in her pocket, humming with dark energy. The ritual of reversal was simple, a thought, a will, a sacrifice. Her hands, still tethered to Karsan’s, found the relic. Her mind screamed at her to hesitate, to find another way, but there was no time. The Vell-shades were getting closer to Nazien, to the panicked, unarmed students. There was no other path. With a guttural cry that ripped from her throat, Vashani forced the activation. A searing heat erupted in her chest, as if a thousand white-hot needles had pierced her heart. The agony arced through every nerve, tendon, and sinew in her body. She gasped, her body arching backwards, a silent scream tearing at her throat, unable to make a sound. [WARNING: Soul-Core Immolation Detected. Salvation Parameters Deviated.] The Karmic Ledger’s voice was a cold chime in her skull, utterly devoid of sympathy. But even as it warned, the ethereal scales manifested above them, vibrating wildly. They dipped, then rose, then plunged again, like a frantic metronome of impending doom. [WARD GRANTED: Soul-Anchor. Soul-Core Integrity at 7%] [PUNISHMENT: Karmic Backlash. Deviation from Self-Preservation Protocols.] The pain intensified, a simultaneous burning and freezing that threatened to tear her consciousness apart. Ghostly talons scraped across her ribcage, while an amber barrier bloomed over her sternum, repelling the taint. “Vashani!” Karsan shouted hoarsely. He absorbed the backlash through the radiant strands binding them, his sinews straining under the shared burden. He pulled her closer, his arms wrapping around her waist, anchoring her to him, his body trembling with the strain. He was roaring now, a primal sound of rage and terror. “What have you done?!” But Vashani couldn't answer. Her vision blurred, the grand hall spinning, the Vell-shades morphing into grotesque blurs. The corruptive force, now contained within her host body, wasn’t content to simply burn. It pulsed, a monstrous heartbeat, and with each beat, a massive gravitational pull erupted from her, tugging, hauling, *dragging* her upwards. The air around her shimmered, warping, as if the very fabric of reality was being stretched thin. Dust and debris from the collapsing roof swirled around her, then began to accelerate, rocketing skyward. Her hair whipped around her face, her feet lifting from the ground. She was being pulled, inexorably, towards the gaping maw in the roof, towards the swirling vortex of the execution zenith. She was becoming a conduit, a funnel for the celestial maelstrom. “No, you don’t!” Karsan bellowed, his voice laced with absolute fury. He knew what was happening. He wasn't letting her go. His arms tightened around her, a vice-like grip. The luminous strands that bound their wrists flared, expanding around her torso and limbs to encase them both like a chrysalis. He didn’t fight the pull; he embraced it. With a roar, Karsan surged upward, pulling Vashani with him into the void, an amber streak driving straight into the maelstrom. The last thing Vashani registered was the sickening lurch in her stomach as they plunged, headlong, into the swirling blackness above, the Atheneum shrinking beneath them, its screams swallowed by the roaring gale. Then the dark swallowed them whole, suffocating and vast.
