Weighing the Scales

“I will burn all of Zirqan to ash before I let you die.” Karsan’s gilded aura pulsed with contained destruction, his amber gaze still fixed on Vashani. Across the ruined tier, scorched stone and unconscious bodies lay in tangled drifts. Vashani pushed away his hand, the phantom ward line on her cheek a stark reminder of the system’s constraints. She needed him sane, not a vengeful deity. “No,” she commanded, her voice raw but firm. “You will not. You will stand with me. You will watch.” She grabbed his wrist, her grip surprisingly strong despite the bone-deep ache from the blast. His skin was warm, vibrant with the unleashed power, but she didn’t flinch. “Nazien, grab his other arm. We’re going to the Grand Hall.” Nazien, pale but resolute, complied. His small hands wrapped around Karsan’s arm, his eyes darting between his sister and the man who had just saved them with such terrifying force. Karsan allowed them to steer him, his golden gaze never leaving Vashani’s face, a silent, burning question in their depths. The residual power radiating from him made the stone under their boots feel warm, almost alive. They moved through the desolate corridors, past overturned brazers and abandoned study scrolls. The eclipse had cast a deep, premature twilight over the Atheneum, making the familiar halls seem alien and menacing. Instructors, drawn by the earlier tremors, milled nervously at the periphery of the Grand Hall, murmuring as soot settled over their robes. The Grand Hall was usually a place of solemn judgment, vast and imposing, with tiered seating rising towards a high, arched ceiling. Now, it was a crucible. Jaelia stood near the central dais, looking disheveled and afraid, clinging to Lord Vexan's heir. The heir glared at their approach with stony contempt. The remaining elite students, those not caught in Karsan’s earlier outburst, clustered around them, forming a nervous, defiant phalanx. Vashani ignored them all. She dragged Karsan to the very center of the hall, positioning him so his unholy glow was undeniable. Nazien stayed close, a small, fierce shadow. “Nyrin Ghori!” Vexan's scion barked, his voice devoid of smooth charm. “What is the meaning of this outrage? How dare you drag this… this *creature* into the sacred chamber after the carnage on the terrace?” Vashani turned, taking in the assembled instructors, then fixing on the scion and Jaelia. “Monster?” she echoed, her voice dangerously quiet. “He is a man driven to desperation by your poison, Vexan. And you, Jaelia.” Her eyes narrowed on the 'heroine'. “Your harmless mischief nearly condemned him to a fate worse than death.” Jaelia flinched, her lip trembling. “I don’t know what she means! Karsan committed a grave crime, he deserved his punishment!” Vashani laughed, a short, sharp sound devoid of humor. “Did he? Or did *you* steal his station and craft, condemning him to be scapegoated while you bathed in his renown?” Gasps rippled through the gallery benches. The Vexan heir's face darkened, his nostrils flaring. “This is madness! You accuse the heir of the Vexan line and a revered student of… what precisely?” “I accuse her of a soul-tethering identity swap!” Vashani roared, her voice echoing through the hall. “A relic of forbidden magic that has his soul bound to the impending eclipse, set to incinerate him! And I have proof!” She lifted her hand, palm open, and focused. The system, usually a silent, unseen judge, responded to her fervent demand for justice. A chime, clear as crystal bells, echoed through the hall. [Display: Truth Weighing Initiate] Above them, shimmering into existence, appeared two ethereal pans balanced on a fulcrum of blinding light. The air prickled with ozone. The masters stared, hushed and motionless. Not even the highest Weavers could so casually summon the visible manifestation of the System’s judgment. [Request: Accusation for Soul-Tethering Identity Swap by Jaelia against Karsan; Intent: Malevolent Negligence; Evidence: Sunken Skein Relic] Vashani held up the intricate, dark relic she’d retrieved, its surface now faintly glowing with a sickly green light under the apparatus's influence. “This is the Sunken Skein. It records every weave, every thread. Watch.” She channeled a surge of Nyrin’s magic into the relic, a command for it to project its stored memories. A ghostly, translucent image flickered above the bronze pans, showing Jaelia, younger and giggling, holding the same relic. Then, the image shifted: Jaelia, standing over a sleeping Karsan, chanting softly, the relic pulsing as his essence seemed to flow into hers, and hers into his. The vision was brief, but damning. The senior ranks muttered, their skin draining of color. Jaelia choked, tears streaming down her face, her ‘harmless mischief’ laid bare as a monstrous act. The heir's chin tightened, his pupils darting as his standing dissolved. [Verdict: Guilt for Soul-Tethering Identity Swap; Intent: Malevolent Negligence; Punishment: Soul-Tethered to Sunken Skein for Retribution] The celestial apparatus dipped violently, the plate representing Jaelia plummeting. A faint, sickening green glow enveloped Jaelia, who shrieked, clutching her chest. Bypassing the judgment beam entirely, the heir lunged forward. He knew a lost cause when he saw one. His reputation was ruined, his plans for power undone. And Vashani was the architect. Darkness coalesced in his hand, not the subtle weaving of light, but a hungry void. He didn’t care about propriety, about witnesses. He hurled a lethal, shadow-lance, a spear of pure oblivion, directly at Vashani’s back. It moved with impossible speed, unblockable by conventional means, aimed at her unprotected spine. Karsan, still bound by Vashani’s command, let out a guttural roar, his body tensing, his golden aura flaring in desperate, impotent rage. But Nazien was faster. With a desperate cry, he launched himself into the space between his sister and the incoming death. In his hand, a small, carved orb lifted from the Vexan suite flared with a blinding flash. A pulse of pure, unadulterated stillness erupted. The shadow-lance, inches from Vashani’s spine, hung suspended in the air, frozen. Nazien, breathing heavily, stood before it, holding the now-glowing orb, his eyes wide with frantic triumph.
