Chapter 5 of 10
Breath of the Glass Dragon
1.1k words
The roaring inferno climbed, a molten tide eager to consume. Superheated air scorched Suyara’s nostrils, curling the edges of her sleeves as liquid fire lapped the foot of the healing slab. Rigidity locked her spine, yet her sight remained fixed on the incandescent slurry. Her cultivation art, the Glacial Veil, was designed to freeze, to entomb. But this… this was the primal heart of Okhara, a living, hungry forge. Her frost would flash to steam against this surge, offering only seconds of stall.
“Suyara!” Vashan hauled himself upright, ignoring the sharp tear across his ribs. His gaze swept the narrowing shelf of bare stone. Magma spit and hissed around them, untamed heat blistering the air.
*“Fool boy! Do you want to become a charcoal briquette?”* Skarn’s rasp scraped through Vashan’s skull. *“Your tiny brain is melting. We cannot outrun it. You must swallow it down, inverse the draw. A forbidden gambit.”*
“What are you talking about, Skarn? My core is still mending!” Vashan choked, the air burning his throat.
*“The Dragon’s Breath Reversal! You absorbed the Chaotic Heart, not just its power, but its essence! Your body is a vessel for both creation and annihilation! Focus, you imbecile! Not on projecting heat, but on devouring it! Pull the very essence of the flame into yourself, and then—blast it back, inverted! You will freeze the molten heart of this mountain!”*
Vashan muttered under his breath, his knuckles blanched as his grip tightened. The air around him distorted. Dark crimson veins bulged across his uninjured forearm, spidering up his neck toward his jaw.
“Vashan, what are you doing?” she demanded, throat raspy from the sulfur fumes. The lava was at their feet now, its incandescent surface churning, a thousand tiny bubbles bursting and reforming. The metallic tang of superheated minerals filled the chamber.
He didn't answer. His entire being was focused, drawing on a raw, terrifying power. He opened his mouth, but instead of the usual roar of flames, a guttural, strained sound escaped, like a mountain groaning under immense pressure. The air in front of him shimmered, then began to *darken*. It was not shadow, but an absorption, a vacuum. The fiery orange of the lava closest to them seemed to dim, its vibrant glow momentarily faltering as if something was drinking its essence. A thin, almost invisible, veil of frigid air, impossibly cold, began to spread from his lips.
The lava, which moments before had been a liquid hell, suddenly stiffened. The bubbling surface stilled. A peculiar, hissing crackle filled the room, replacing the roar of the flow. The leading edge of the incandescent tide, still surging upwards, met Vashan’s inverted breath and, with a shudder, transformed. The molten rock solidified, not into dull stone, but into a glossy, jet-black obsidian. Vitreous volcanic glass hardened in a crackling flash, standing as a jagged black rampart where the liquid fire had surged.
“It held,” Suyara whispered. The ambient furnace cooled, replaced by the acrid musk of tempered stone. Black vitreous glass hemmed the edge of the dais.
“It’s not enough,” Vashan grunted, collapsing back onto the slab, sweat plastering strands of dark hair to his forehead. His vision swam, his head throbbing. “It’s too thick. We need to break out.”
*“Well, don’t just lie there, you oaf! Use that club of yours!”* Skarn snapped. *“It’s still infused with my blood. It can crack this brittle shell.”*
Vashan gripped his wooden bough. The ash-wood hummed with resonant weight against his palm as he squared toward the dark barrier. “Stand back, Suyara!”
With a ragged roar, he brought the branch down, not with a cleaving motion, but a blunt, percussive strike. A deafening crack echoed through the chamber. The vitreous mass split along an internal seam, showering chips of dark silicate. Vashan hammered the bough into the fracture twice more until the crust caved inward, exposing a steaming ventilation conduit.
“Go!” Vashan urged, pushing Suyara forward. She scrambled through the jagged opening, her frost blade already in hand, scanning for threats. Vashan followed, his body screaming in protest, the air in the narrow shaft thick with superheated steam and the acrid scent of sulfur. They crawled, half-climbed, through the labyrinthine passages, guided by the distant sounds of chaos.
They tumbled onto a broad gallery, greeted by carnage. Craters pitted the masonry. Fallen sectarians lay across the flagstones, sun-crested tunics shredded and soaked crimson. Through a sheared outer wall, abyssal siege frames flung globes of shadow-fire against the redoubts, melting ramparts to slag.
“The Ashen Veil…” Suyara whispered, her voice laced with disbelief and horror. The scale of the attack was monumental, far exceeding any raid she could have imagined. This was an invasion.
Vashan’s eyes darted around, taking in the scene. Ash-cloaked marauders swept through crossways, bypassing scattered defenders to seize foundational junctions leading into the volcano’s base. He saw them planting strange, pulsating runic devices along the main thoroughfares, devices that hummed with a dark, resonant frequency. He felt a familiar, unsettling pull – the same cosmic draw he’d felt when the first rift opened. But it was magnified a hundredfold, amplified by the sheer volume of these devices.
*“They’re not after you, Vashan!”* Skarn roared. *“Not directly! The vermin are using the fortress itself! The volcano’s deep magma chamber feeds Okhara’s spirit veins—they intend to rip it open as a path for the Void God!”*
The ancient entity that crippled his meridians was turning this redoubt into a summoning gate. His unsealed core was not simply prey; it was the beacon calling the apocalypse down upon the realm.
“The Elders,” Suyara said, drawing her frost blade. “We have to reach the inner sanctum before Jurok triggers the rifts.” She bolted along the colonnade without waiting for confirmation, cold steel gleaming in her grip.
Vashan matched her pace, timber weapon ready. They plunged through choking plumes of ozone and pulverized basalt into the ceremonial hall. Overturned altars and fractured effigies of volcanic gods littered the expanse.
Tyren Jhal, the arrogant, aristocratic top seed, once so full of bluster and pride, was on his knees. His fine robes were torn, his hair disheveled, and his face was streaked with dirt and tears. He was groveling, his head bowed low, hands clasped together in a pathetic plea. Standing over him, a cruel smile playing on his lips, was Jurok. The double agent, now openly flaunting his allegiance, looked utterly composed, his dark robes unmarked by the chaos, his eyes gleaming with malicious triumph. He held a small, dark orb in his hand, humming with abyssal energy, and as Vashan and Suyara watched, unseen from the shadows of the doorway, Tyren Jhal lifted his head, his eyes pleading, and swore, in a voice choked with fear, his absolute fealty to Jurok, to the Ashen Veil, to save his own miserable life.
