Chapter 3 of 10

Tear in the Wards

934 words

A collective gasp rippled through the Sun-Piercer Enclave’s vast arena. The silence shattered into a roaring tempest of voices. Accusations, demands for Vashan’s immediate execution, and a scattering of stunned murmurs of awe mixed with the volcanic thrum. A dozen sentinels in dark-scaled armor scrambled down the upper tiers, hands hovering over hilts, paralyzed between checking the battered newcomer and restraining the high seat's own daughter. Suyara’s voice, cold as the glacier peaks of the Distant Expanse, cut through the din. “You stain these hallowed grounds, outsider. You disgrace the Zenith Bout. Your audacity will be your final mistake.” A thin vapor drifted from her lips, an aura of bitter frost pouring off her steel. The air around her shimmered, condensing into crystalline motes. Vashan narrowed his glare. “Hallowed grounds?” he scoffed, the blackened bough in his grip thrumming with a low, vibrant heat. “This is a den of vipers, preying on the weak, mocking the dead. You are all complicit.” “Insolence!” Suyara lunged, not with the brute force of Tyren, but with the elegant precision of a blizzard’s cutting edge. *Rimefang* whistled, leaving a trail of shimmering frost in its wake. It was a single, perfect thrust aimed directly at Vashan’s heart, a strike designed to neutralize, not to maim, but with absolute finality. Vashan met her with a roar, his branch sweeping up in a wide, desperate parry. Sparks of raw, clashing geothermal power erupted where petrified grain met frost. The concussion buckled the vitrified crater flagstones beneath their boots. “Careful, boy!” Skarn’s voice, a gravelly whisper within Vashan’s mind, echoed, “Her frost arts are refined. Don’t let that cold seep into your core!” Vashan ignored him, his focus entirely on Suyara. He felt the biting cold try to penetrate his guard, but the chaotic heat of the dragon’s blood within him flared, creating a barrier of searing warmth. He shoved forward, pouring boiling vigor through the petrified branch. The ancient wood pulsed with a crimson glow, and a faint, draconic roar seemed to emanate from its core. Suyara disengaged with a graceful twist, her gaze flickering with a flicker of surprise at the sheer force he’d unleashed. The air around her solidified, forming jagged shards of ice that rotated menacingly. “Your inner fire is… untamed. Chaotic,” she said, her tone level as frozen slate. “Untamed is what you get when you’re not born into your pampered bloodlines!” Vashan retorted, his temper flaring. He charged, a whirlwind of furious strikes, each one imbued with the raw, untamed fire of Mount Ignis itself. The bough became an arc of ember-bright timber, battering Suyara’s calculated parries. She danced back, a vision of icy grace, deflecting his blows with the flat of her blade, each parry driving crystalline frost across the stone. The arena floor, already fractured, began to buckle and crack under the sheer dissonance of their powers. Where Vashan's timber smashed down, the basalt cracked into red-hot gutters of slag. Where Suyara’s blade brushed, frost flowers bloomed on the superheated rock, only to shatter into dust. Their clash escalated, a tempest of contrasting energies. Fire and ice, raw power and refined technique, carving canyons into the ancient stone. The fortress's perimeter barrier flickered erratically, failing to bind the wild discharge. Suddenly, with a sound like tearing silk, a rent appeared in the air above them. A jagged void, darker than pit-ash, ripped straight through the shimmering barrier. The shouting collapsed into shrill panic across the bleachers. “An Abyssal Rift!” someone screamed. The rift widened, spewing forth an unnatural chill that bit like frozen needles against the scalding drafts. A sickly, green-tinged light pulsed from its depths. “Suyara!” A voice boomed. Jurok, Suyara’s loyal retainer, a man with eyes of quiet devotion, launched himself onto the platform. He moved with a speed that belied his calm demeanor, positioning himself protectively between Suyara and the rapidly expanding rift. As he drew his own, lesser frost blade, his hand subtly dipped into a pouch at his waist. Without anyone noticing, a small, dark orb, pulsating with a faint, abyssal glow, tumbled from his fingers, rolling almost imperceptibly towards the base of the rift. The tear in the wards shuddered, then expanded with violent haste. From the swirling darkness, a monstrosity emerged. It was a creature of chitin and shadow, with too many limbs and a gaping maw filled with needle-sharp teeth. Its two foremost claws, dripping with an oily, phosphorescent green fluid, shot out with sickening speed, aiming directly at Suyara. Suyara spun to receive it, edge flashing, but the scything limb moved faster than thought. The poisonous claw closed the distance in a blink. Vashan saw it. The elegant, ice-cold prodigy, who moments ago had been his bitter rival, was about to be impaled. Every grievance against the sect's highborn vanished beneath an unthinking reflex. He lunged, a primal roar tearing from his throat, slamming into Suyara with the full force of his body. He shoved her clear of the beast’s trajectory. The foul claw, meant for Suyara’s heart, instead plunged into Vashan’s chest with a wet, tearing sound. A searing, corrosive pain erupted, spreading like wildfire through his body. He felt the venom bite deep, curdling the channels along his spine. He coughed thick red onto the stones and collapsed, his branch clattering against the shattered floor. Above him, the rift beast shrieked, its monstrous form momentarily obscured by the deepening darkness. *“FOOL! IMBECILE! THAT TAINT! IT’S THE CULT! THE ASHEN VEIL! THE SAME FILTH THAT KILLED YOUR MOTHER!”* Skarn snarled across his skull, rattling his jaw. “*THEY’VE FOUND YOU, BOY! THEY’VE FOUND YOU!*”
