The Unscripted Kiss

The director’s questions echoed across the set, but Nari heard only his ragged exhalation against her ear. His grip on her arm, though no longer a shield, was still solid, grounding her. The silk of his robe felt damp where his shoulder pressed against her, the bruise blossoming there a stark visual against the deep indigo. He straightened slowly, his eyes, still holding that cold, assessing fury, sweeping over the dismantled rig, then resting on the pale faces of the crew members responsible for the wires. A profound silence fell, heavier than any stage direction.
“My apologies, Director Song,” Dae-heon’s voice was low, strained, but impeccably controlled. “A momentary lapse in concentration, perhaps. I misjudged the drop. Are you alright, So Nari?”
His question was for the room, but his eyes were for her, a flicker of something she couldn’t quite decipher passing through them before they shuttered, becoming the Stone Prince once more. Nari nodded, her throat tight. “Yes, sunbaenim. I’m fine.”
Sunbaenim. Senior. The formal honorific felt like a wall erected between them. He offered her a stiff bow, then turned to his manager, Chief Min, who was already rushing forward, face etched with concern. Whispers broke out among the crew, hushed and quick. Everyone knew a 'malfunction' of that magnitude was rarely just an accident. Especially not on a high-profile set like ‘The Crimson Sleeve’.
Over the next few days, a subtle shift permeated the set’s atmosphere. Safety checks became meticulous, almost obsessive. Director Song was visibly on edge, his gaze sharper. And Dae-heon… he didn’t speak of the incident again, not to Nari, but his presence became a quiet anchor. During breaks, his eyes would track her, a subtle, almost imperceptible turn of his head. If she stumbled on a prop, he’d be the first to reach out, his hand hovering, not quite touching, but undeniably there. It was a silent vigilance, a protective shadow that followed her, quiet and unsettling. It was nothing like the cohabitation contract, nothing like the cold actor she had come to expect.
He watched her when she wasn’t looking, a constant hum beneath the surface of their professional interactions. The air around them thrummed with a new kind of tension, not hostile, but charged. She found herself acutely aware of his proximity, the way his broad shoulders would briefly block out the harsh set lights, the scent of sandalwood and old paper that clung to his robes. It was a suffocating, exhilarating awareness.
Then came the day for the first kiss scene between Lady Aerin and Jihun. The pages called for a chaste, frantic meeting of lips, a moment stolen amidst political turmoil, full of longing and regret. The scene was pivotal, marking the turning point in their forbidden romance.
Nari felt the familiar knot of anxiety tighten in her stomach. Acting a kiss was always awkward, but with Dae-heon, after the 'accident' and his new, quiet watchfulness, it felt like walking a tightrope over a chasm.
They stood on a dimly lit set, designed to resemble a hidden pavilion garden. Mists swirled from dry ice machines, and paper lanterns cast soft, ethereal glows. Director Song paced, his voice a low rumble. “Nari-ssi, Dae-heon-ssi. This isn’t just a kiss. It’s a promise, a betrayal of everything they know. It’s fear and hope intertwined. Show me the raw hunger. The yearning. It needs to burn.”
Nari inhaled slowly, trying to channel Lady Aerin’s hidden passions. She met Dae-heon’s eyes. They were dark, unreadable, but held a strange intensity that resonated with the director’s words. He was in character, she reminded herself. This was acting.
“Action!”
Dae-heon, as Prince Jihun, stepped forward. His movements were slow, deliberate, each step weighted with the character’s internal struggle. He reached out, his hand tracing the line of her jaw, his thumb brushing her cheekbone with a feather-light touch. The world narrowed to just the two of them, the soft rustle of silk, the faint scent of his cologne.
His eyes, usually so guarded, were filled with a profound sadness, a raw vulnerability that robbed the air from her lungs. He leaned in, his gaze dropping to her lips, then back to her eyes, seeking permission in a way the script never intended. Nari’s heart thudded against her ribs, a frantic rhythm that had nothing to do with Lady Aerin and everything to do with Nari So.
The blocking dictated a gentle kiss, a tentative press of lips. But as his mouth met hers, it wasn't gentle. It was urgent, demanding. A sharp heat flared straight through Nari. His hand cupped the back of her head, deepening the contact, tilting her face up, and his other arm wrapped around her waist, pulling her flush against him. Her fingers, meant to rest lightly on his chest, curled into the silk of his robes, gripping tight.
This wasn’t acting. This wasn't his royal alter ego. This was Dae-heon. His lips moved against hers with a fierce intensity that stunned her. The kiss was deep, consuming, a public revelation of feelings neither of them was ready to admit, spilling over onto the set, visible to every single person watching. It was an open plea, a confession. His warmth mingled with hers, hot and sweet, and for a dizzying moment, Nari lost all track of where they were—the cameras, the crew, and the fragile façade of their lives blurring away.
When he finally pulled back, a soft, almost inaudible gasp escaped her. Her lips tingled, her entire body hummed. His eyes, still dark, were now alight with an unasked question, a sharp yearning that mirrored her own. He looked dazed, as if he’d just woken from a dream, and she knew, with a terrifying clarity, that she wanted this fake relationship, this contract marriage, to be real.
“Cut! Perfect! Absolutely stunning!” Director Song’s voice boomed, breaking the spell. The crew, who had stayed pinned in silence, erupted into murmurs, a mixture of awe and shock. Nari risked a glance. Chae-ri, standing off to the side with her own entourage, had gone utterly still, her face a mask of frozen disbelief, her eyes narrowed and sharp.
Later that day, back in the quiet sterility of Dae-heon’s penthouse, the lingering heat of the kiss still pulsed beneath Nari’s skin. She was in the living room, trying to focus on the next episode's sides, but the words blurred. The doorbell chimed, and Dae-heon’s manager, Chief Min, entered, his usual composed demeanor replaced by a strained urgency. Dae-heon was already there, perched on the edge of the minimalist sofa, his expression unreadable.
“I have the report,” Chief Min began, his voice low. “The IP address that initially uploaded the fabricated photos of Nari-ssi… we traced it. It’s registered to a guest account within the main network of Zenith Entertainment.”
Nari froze. Zenith Entertainment. Chae-ri’s agency. A cold, hard certainty settled in her chest. It wasn’t just Chae-ri’s ambition, or her jealousy. This was calculated. This was a deliberate act of sabotage, not just against Nari, but against Stellara, against Director Im, against all she had built.
Dae-heon’s eyes, fixed on Chief Min, were sharp and focused. “Is there undeniable proof that points directly to Yoon Chae-ri?”
Chief Min hesitated, running a hand through his neatly combed hair. “The account was accessed multiple times from a specific computer. That computer is registered to the office of… Yoon Chae-ri’s personal assistant. We can’t definitively say Chae-ri herself uploaded it, but the trail leads directly to her inner circle. It’s enough to raise a very public accusation.”
The silence that followed was suffocating. Nari looked from Chief Min to Dae-heon, a leaden pressure sinking onto her shoulders. Expose Chae-ri and create a new, bigger scandal that would overshadow everything, proving the 'marriage' was a response to malicious rumors? Or stay silent, knowing the viper was still in the grass, ready to strike again, her own career and reputation hanging by a thread? It was an impossible choice.
What was she going to do?
