Chapter 7: Calculating the Yield of War

Charcoal scraped against the flat slate, leaving jagged black lines that represented their dwindling winter resources. Nyanchi worked in the dim light of a flickering tallow candle, her fingers smudged with black dust. She was busy translating primitive tribal logistics into a structured balance sheet, calculating grain reserves, weapon durability, and troop health. Every scrap of data confirmed her worst fears. Nyanchi didn't look up when the heavy hide of the tent flap rustled, letting in a gust of freezing night air. She kept her eyes glued to the stone slate, her mind racing through emergency mitigation strategies. This was no different from a hostile takeover back on Earth, except the price of bankruptcy here was death. "You're late," she said, her voice dripping with the cool authority of a senior corporate partner. She didn't need to look to know who had entered. Heavy footsteps thudded against the packed earth as Kaelen entered, his broad, muscular shoulders casting a long, imposing shadow across her makeshift desk. A low growl vibrated deep in his chest, his silver wolf ears pinned flat against his head in sheer frustration. He radiated a stifling heat, his body practically vibrating with restless, violent energy. "Thorne's demands are unacceptable," Kaelen snarled, slamming a clawed fist onto the stone table, causing the charcoal to jump. "He wants you as tribute. He wants our hunting grounds. I should have torn his throat out when he stood in our camp instead of letting him walk away." "Anger is a luxury we cannot afford, Kaelen," she replied calmly, finally raising her eyes to meet his blazing golden gaze. "Let's look at the actual numbers before you decide to throw your entire tribe into a meat grinder. Emotion is a terrible basis for strategic planning." Kaelen narrowed his eyes, his chest heaving with suppressed rage as he stared at the strange, geometric marks she had drawn on the slate. "Look at this," Nyanchi commanded, tapping the slate with a dry twig. "This represents the Golden Lion Tribe's current military strength. They have over five hundred high-tier beastmen, forty of whom are at the peak of the Earth Realm. Your Frost Wolf tribe has barely two hundred combat-ready warriors." She drew a circle around a small cluster of marks, her movements precise, calculated, and deliberate. "If we fight them head-on, our probability of survival is less than eight percent," she continued, her voice completely devoid of emotion. "It is not a battle. It is a liquidation of assets. You will be wiped out, your people enslaved, and I will be taken as war booty anyway." He let out a harsh, bitter laugh, the muscles in his jaw clenching so hard a thick vein throbbed violently at his temple. "You speak of my warriors as if they are pebbles on a path," he muttered, his voice dropping to a dangerous quiet. "They are my brothers. They are men who would gladly die to protect this tribe from those golden bastards." "They are resources, and dying for nothing is a terrible return on investment," Nyanchi countered sharply, her gaze piercing through his anger. "A good leader does not waste capital on a losing venture. We need a merger, not a massacre." His ears twitched, his posture stiffening as he tried to comprehend her strange, cold jargon. "We need a strategic coalition," she explained, drawing a line connecting their tribe to a neighboring territory. "But to negotiate a coalition from a position of strength, we need leverage. Right now, we have none. Thorne knows we are weak, and he is playing his hand perfectly." Strategic dominance requires a deterrent, a weapon so formidable that the Lions will hesitate to strike, forcing them to the negotiating table. "And what weapon could we possibly find in three days?" Kaelen demanded, leaning closer, his primal scent of pine and raw power washing over her. Kaelen flinched slightly as she reached out, her cool, delicate fingers lightly touching the center of his chest, right over his beating heart. "You," Nyanchi whispered, her eyes locking onto his. "You are the weapon. But you are currently an underperforming asset." "My strength is unmatched in this valley!" he roared, offended by her blunt assessment, his sharp canine teeth bared in frustration. She did not flinch from his roar, her hand remaining steady on his chest, feeling the frantic, unstable rhythm of his heart beneath his skin. "Your core is fractured, Kaelen," she said, her voice dropping to a soft, lethal whisper. "You are at the peak of the Earth Realm, but your spiritual energy is a chaotic mess. You are holding back your breakthrough because you know it will kill you." Silence fell over the tent, heavy and suffocating as Kaelen stared at her, his golden eyes wide with shock. "How do you know that?" he whispered, his voice laced with sudden, defensive suspicion. "Not much escapes my calculations," she replied, suppressing a smile as her internal System screen flashed, displaying Kaelen's stats and the volatile red warning signs around his spiritual core. "To survive, you must reach the True Beast stage. It is the only way to force the Lions to negotiate." He pulled back, shaking his head, his silver hair swaying. A bitter sneer curled his upper lip. "Females in this world only know how to demand," he growled, his voice laced with deep-seated trauma. "They demand protection, they demand food, and they demand we die for them. My own father died defending a mate who did not even remember his name when she took her next husband. Now you demand I throw myself into the jaws of death for your plans?" "Your father made a bad investment in an unreliable partner," Nyanchi said, her voice cutting through his grief with the sharpness of a scalpel. "He traded his life for zero return. I am not asking for your worship, Kaelen. I am asking for a contract." Contractual agreements, she knew, were the only things that truly bound people together when trust was non-existent. She would never trust a man, and she didn't expect him to trust her blindly either. "I am not demanding your death; I am offering you a hostile takeover of your own destiny," Nyanchi said, standing up to meet him eye-to-eye, ignoring the massive height difference. "If you attempt the breakthrough alone, your mortality rate is seventy percent. But I am offering to stabilize your core with my system's healing energy." Her gaze remained steady, showing no fear, only the cold, hard logic that had guided her through a past life of corporate betrayal. She had learned early on that relying on emotions was a liability; only mutual self-interest could guarantee loyalty. "This is a joint venture," she continued, her voice softening just enough to sound persuasive. "I inject the necessary spiritual capital to keep you alive, and you provide the physical protection we both need to survive. We share the risk, and we share the profit. If you die, I lose my only viable protector in this savage world. I have no incentive to let you fail." Kaelen searched her face, looking for any sign of deceit, any hint of the manipulative females he had grown up detesting. Yet, all he found in her dark eyes was a chilling, beautiful clarity. She didn't pretend to care for him; she simply laid out the facts as if his life were a ledger to be balanced. "You are a terrifying creature, Nyanchi," he murmured, a strange mix of awe and dread coloring his voice. "You look like a delicate female, but your heart is made of cold, unyielding iron." "Iron is durable," she retorted, a faint, bitter smile touching her lips. "Gold is soft and easily stolen. I prefer to be durable." "If you fail," he said slowly, his voice thick with emotion, "I will lose my mind. I will become a mindless beast, tearing apart everything and everyone I love before my core explodes." "Then fail is something we simply cannot afford to do," Nyanchi replied, her voice firm. "Trust my calculations, Kaelen. Put your life in my hands, and I will make you a king." He closed his eyes, his massive shoulders slumping as he let out a long, ragged breath, finally defeated by her relentless logic. "Fine," he muttered, opening his eyes, a fierce, desperate light burning within them. "My life is yours to gamble, Nyanchi. Do not make me regret this." --- Midnight arrived with a howling wind that rattled the wooden supports of the tent, casting long, erratic shadows across the dirt floor. Runes of spiritual containment were drawn in a dry circle around Kaelen, glowing with a faint, blue light as he sat cross-legged in the center. He had stripped off his heavy furs, leaving his muscular torso bare, his skin gleaming with sweat in the dim firelight. Nyanchi knelt directly in front of him, her hands hovering inches from his bare chest, her mind fully focused on the System interface hovering in her vision. She could see the glowing bar of her own spiritual energy reserves, calculated to the exact decimal point. "Are you ready?" she asked, her voice steady despite the adrenaline surging through her veins. Kaelen nodded, his jaw clenched so tightly that the muscles in his neck strained. His sharp claws tore into the dirt floor beneath his knees, anchor points for the agonizing pain he knew was coming. "Do it," he growled, his voice vibrating through the quiet tent. "Do not stop, no matter what happens." Sitting in the silence, Nyanchi closed her eyes and willed the System to activate its primary healing protocol, focusing all her concentration on the task. Green, liquid light began to flow from her palms, wrapping around Kaelen's chest like glowing vines, sinking deep into his skin. The temperature in the room plummeted instantly, the air growing thick with the scent of ozone and raw spiritual power. [System Notification: Initiating Spiritual Core Stabilization. Target: Kaelen. Risk level: High. Please maintain constant energy flow.] Pain flared in Kaelen's eyes almost immediately, his back arching violently as a low, guttural scream tore from his throat. The veins in his neck bulged, turning a dark, bruised purple as his spiritual core began to reject the sudden influx of foreign energy. "Focus, Kaelen," Nyanchi commanded, her brow furrowed as she poured more energy into him, her own body straining under the massive power draw. "Guide the energy to your fractured core. Do not let it scatter, or your body will tear itself apart." Sweat poured down his face, his silver hair sticking to his forehead as his skin began to crack, glowing with an unstable, volatile red light from within. He was fighting his own instincts, trying to let her control the flow of his energy when every fiber of his being screamed to fight back. [Warning: Target's Spiritual Core instability rising. Core integrity at forty percent. System energy output must be increased by two hundred percent.] Nyanchi grimaced, feeling a sharp pain in her own chest as she pushed her system to its absolute limits, ignoring the warning lights flashing red in her vision. She could feel his core, a fractured sphere of burning spiritual energy, spinning wildly and threatening to explode. "I have you," she hissed through clenched teeth, leaning closer until her forehead almost touched his. "Hold on. Do not let go of your consciousness." Suddenly, a sickening crack echoed through the quiet tent, followed by Kaelen's body violently convulsing. Blood, thick and pitch-black, sprayed from his mouth, splattering across Nyanchi's face and chest as his eyes snapped open, completely devoid of reason, burning with a wild, terrifying primal madness.
