Chapter 17: Acquisition of the Sky

Cold air rushed through the high stone windows of the council chamber, carrying the scent of damp pine and ozone.
Breathing felt easier today.
Lingering embers of Thorne’s volcanic spiritual energy and Kaelen’s icy shadow essence had finally settled into a delicate equilibrium within her meridians.
Yesterday's desperate dual-cultivation had nearly torn her apart, but her body had adapted, processing the conflicting elements with cold efficiency.
She could feel the change in her veins, a new strength that felt less like healing and more like a permanent upgrade.
Hovering in her peripheral vision, the semi-translucent system interface blinked with a steady, neon blue light.
Dual-harmony stabilized.
Dual-pregnancy chance: active.
System alerts scrolled down the screen in rapid succession, documenting the successful neutralization of the Phoenix Clan's insidious poison.
A high price had been paid in emotional vulnerability, a currency she despised spending, but the physical return on investment was undeniable.
Her cultivation level had nudged upward, solidifying her foundation in this savage world.
Thorne stood near the doorway, his massive shoulders tense under his dark leather vest.
His jaw was set in a hard, aggressive line, a thick vein pulsing at his temple as he kept his eyes locked on the entrance.
Beside him, Kaelen leaned against the stone pillar, his slender fingers tapping a restless, silent rhythm against the hilt of his curved blade.
Neither man had spoken a word to the other since yesterday's forced merging of their spiritual paths.
Their mutual hatred was a tangible force, thick enough to choke on, yet they stood together like twin gargoyles guarding her sanctuary.
Heavy footsteps echoed down the corridor, shattering the fragile silence of the hall.
Feathers of brilliant crimson and gold brushed against the stone doorframe as the visitor stepped inside.
Arrogance radiated from the man like heat from a dying forge.
Flanked by four heavily armored guards, Lord Zephyr of the Phoenix Clan walked into the room as if he already owned the ground beneath his boots.
His hair was a shock of molten orange, tied back with a gold band, and his sharp, amber eyes swept over the room with immediate disdain.
He did not bow.
Instead, he waved a dismissive hand, prompting his guards to drag three massive, iron-bound chests into the center of the chamber.
Clanging loudly, the chests settled onto the stone floor, their latches springing open to reveal piles of glowing, high-grade spirit stones.
Pulses of raw, concentrated spiritual energy radiated from the crystals, bathing the room in a faint, iridescent light.
"Let us skip the pleasantries," Zephyr said, his voice carrying the dry, crackling quality of a brushfire.
He looked directly at Nyanchi, ignoring the low, rumbling growl that immediately vibrated from Thorne's chest.
"We are here to negotiate a merger," Zephyr continued, adjusting his silk collar.
Nyanchi leaned back in her high-backed stone chair, crossing one leg over the other.
Her face remained a mask of polite indifference, though her mind was already calculating the market value of the stones before her.
Three hundred high-grade stones, she noted mentally.
Enough to fund an entire army's cultivation needs for a decade, or to buy three minor tribes outright.
"A merger?" Nyanchi murmured, her voice cool and level.
"Usually, when a faction sends assassins to poison a prospective partner, the next meeting begins with an apology, not a transaction."
Zephyr let out a sharp, mocking laugh that sounded like dry leaves scraping across stone.
"Apologies are for the weak, Lady Nyanchi," he sneered.
"Our failed attempt on your life was merely a stress test."
"You survived, which proves your vitality."
Kaelen's hand shifted on his hilt, the metal clicking softly.
"Watch your tongue, bird," Kaelen whispered, his eyes narrowing into deadly slits.
"One more insolent word and I will pluck those pretty feathers from your skin."
Zephyr did not even glance at the shadow beastman.
His focus remained locked on Nyanchi, his amber eyes burning with an intense, desperate hunger that he tried to hide behind his smug smile.
But Nyanchi saw right through it.
Years of analyzing desperate corporate executives taught her how to spot the exact moment an enterprise was on the verge of bankruptcy.
This man was not here from a position of strength.
He was running out of time.
System notifications flickered quietly in the corner of her vision, analyzing Zephyr's biological data.
Warning: Phoenix Clan genetic degradation detected at eighty-four percent.
Birth rates in the Phoenix territory have dropped to near-zero over the last three centuries.
They needed her.
More specifically, they needed the system-enhanced offspring she could produce.
Their proud, ancient lineage was dying, suffocating under the weight of their own stagnant blood.
A faint, cold smile touched Nyanchi's lips.
"Three hundred high-grade spirit stones," she said, gesturing toward the chests with a lazy flick of her wrist.
"A generous dowry for any ordinary female in the Gaia Beastworld."
"But I am not an asset you can buy off the shelf, Lord Zephyr."
Zephyr's smile faltered, a tiny twitch appearing at the corner of his left eye.
"Do not be foolish," he said, his voice dropping a register.
"Phoenix Clan offers protection, prestige, and a direct connection to the upper realms."
"You would be a queen."
Standing up slowly, Nyanchi walked down the steps of the dais, her movements fluid and deliberate.
She stopped just inches from the open chests, looking down at the glowing crystals.
"Protection is a temporary service," she said, picking up a stone and turning it over in her palm.
"Prestige is an intangible concept with zero liquid value."
"And your connection to the upper realms is currently blocked by the encroaching miasma of the Beast God of Ruin."
She tossed the stone back into the chest, where it landed with a sharp clack.
"You came here because you are desperate," she continued, locking her gaze with his.
"Your females are barren."
Aging warriors fill your ranks, and your territory is shrinking.
Zephyr's jaw tightened so hard the bones beneath his skin seemed to creak.
Anger flared in his eyes, but he did not deny her words.
"I reject your dowry," Nyanchi said clearly.
Gasps echoed from the guards behind Zephyr, their hands dropping to their weapon hilts.
Thorne stepped forward instantly, his massive frame radiating pure, crushing spiritual pressure that forced the guards to freeze in place.
"However," Nyanchi added, her voice cutting through the tension like a scalpel, "I am willing to discuss an acquisition."
Zephyr frowned, his brow furrowing.
"An acquisition?" he repeated.
"What nonsense is this?"
Smiling coldly, Nyanchi walked toward a large map of the continent hanging on the stone wall.
She tapped her finger against a narrow corridor of land winding through the northern mountains.
"This is the Whispering Pass," she said.
"It controls eighty percent of all trade between the northern beast tribes and the eastern plains."
"Currently, the Phoenix Clan levies a sixty percent tariff on all goods passing through."
Zephyr crossed his arms, his expression hardening.
"It is our territory," he said.
"We have defended it for generations."
"Not anymore," Nyanchi replied, her eyes gleaming with ruthless ambition.
"I propose a hostile takeover."
"Every customs house, military outpost, and mineral right along that route must belong to me."
"In exchange, I will grant you a single, non-exclusive breeding contract with my lineage."
Zephyr stared at her as if she had lost her mind.
"You dare demand our primary source of wealth?" he hissed.
"For a single cub?"
"Purified bloodlines of the Mother of Beasts do not come cheap," Nyanchi corrected him.
"A cub that will save your clan from extinction."
"Without me, those trade routes will belong to your rivals within two generations anyway, because you won't have the strength to defend them."
Silence descended on the room, heavy and suffocating.
Thorne let out a low, appreciative chuckle from the shadows, his eyes burning with pride.
Even Kaelen looked impressed, a slow, dangerous grin spreading across his pale face.
Nyanchi stood tall, her hands folded neatly behind her back as she waited.
She was daring him to match her strategic intellect, playing a high-stakes game of chicken with the future of his entire race.
Every calculation in her mind pointed to an inevitable victory; he had no cards left to play.
But then, the air in the room grew suddenly, unnaturally cold.
Zephyr's tense posture relaxed, a slow, oily smile creeping back onto his face.
He reached into his silk robes, his fingers wrapping around something hidden close to his chest.
Drawing his hand out, he held up a small, crystal vial filled with a thick, glowing gold liquid.
Spiritual energy of an ancient, terrifying scale pulsed from the glass, causing the system interface in Nyanchi's vision to flash a violent red.
Zephyr sneers and reveals a vial of golden blood: 'We already possess the blood of the first Mother. We do not need your consent, only your lineage.'
