Chapter 9 of 10

Rewriting the System

927 words

The obsidian blade, shimmering with a void-like hunger, vibrated an inch from Jahira’s skin, a cold promise of oblivion. Davran’s eyes, still weeping the tell-tale black grains, were wide and unfocused, his body taut with a pain that ripped through their psychic link. The last grains of the Sandglass Curse pulsed, a terminal rhythm, against the very core of his being. His chest heaved, a ragged gasp caught in his lungs, and then he began to fall, his colossal frame crumpling towards her, the magic-blade dissolving into harmless motes of dust. He was dying. Right now. His raw, unfettered dark magic, the very power she had cultivated, was now a poisoned well, gushing out of him as the curse reached its final destination. Jahira caught him, his vast weight crashing heavily against her smaller frame. She staggered, her boots skidding on the lapis-strewn floor, but held him upright. His skin was slick with cold sweat, teeth locked tight, muscles rigid. He sagged against her, a whimpering sound escaping his lips, a sound she hadn't heard since he was a small, terrified boy, trapped beneath the earth. The draining of his vitality pulsed directly into her own veins, cold and hollow. This wasn't merely the weakening of a tool; it was the slow, agonizing severing of a bond she hadn't realized ran so deep. He was her weapon, yes, but he was *hers*. She scanned the chamber. The divine relic, now a fractured mess of crystalline shards and drake venom, lay smoking on the ground. Minal, frozen by the shifting danger, stood a few paces away, her face blank with disbelief. The rebel fighters, half-crushed by the fallen ceiling, groveled in a broken heap while bloodline practitioners struggled to maintain their fraying barriers. The wild magic that had been Davran’s power whipped through the subterranean vault, seeking an anchor, a new host. “The boy is a shell,” Minal’s voice croaked, strained with predatory ambition. Her eyes, no longer burning with righteous fury, instead held a glint of predatory hunger. “The curse has taken him. But his power… it still remains. Undispersed.” Jahira watched, a cold, clinical fascination replacing her earlier panic. Davran’s body trembled in her arms, his mystical tether to the vortex of dark energy fraying, like a thousand brittle threads snapping at once. The curse had finished its work, stripping his essence from the very power that had defined him. Minal stepped toward the center of the hall, where the remnants of Davran’s power gathered into an iridescent pool of liquid night. “This is the true path,” she declared, her tone rising shrill and manic, entirely stripped of its former ‘saintly’ cadence. “To take his power, to purify it, to become the true ruler of this blighted world. An immortal Empress, unfettered by mortal concerns, guiding all to salvation!” Her hands stretched out, not in prayer, but in grasping avarice. She was no saint. She was a scavenger, a viper waiting to strike, and this was her moment to shed the skin of her self-righteousness. “Fool,” Jahira murmured, her voice a low, contemptuous whisper against Davran’s bloodied hair. She lowered him gently, supporting his head with her knee, her eyes now locked on Minal. The stone floor beneath them bore an intricate lattice of ancient bloodline diagrams, pulsing faintly with the lapis lazuli’s latent energy. She hadn't designed this particular one, but she knew its language. Its syntax. Its purpose. Minal, oblivious, reached the edge of the dark vortex, her face taut with hunger. “Witness the birth of a new era!” she shrieked, and plunged both hands into the liquid night. The energy surged like rising water. Minal convulsed, whites showing in her rolled-back eyes as a crooked smile stretched her lips while the darkness flooded her veins. But Jahira was faster. Her gaze darted, mapping the ancient patterns carved into the lapis bedrock, tracing the conduits she had spent a decade studying in Ghalib. She saw the connections, the conduits, the points of inflection. With a precise, almost lazy motion, Jahira pressed her bare palm to the stone floor. Her mana, sharp and crystalline, flared into the dust, cutting along the lines of the bloodline array. She did not build a new system; she only inverted the existing runes, shifting an anchor here, twisting an intake canal there. The stone groans beneath them, shaking down to its foundation, and fissures spiderwebbed across the lapis walls. The black sand, now entirely expelled from Davran’s collapsing body, lacked a host. Until now. Jahira’s rewritten array, a marvel of improvised, lethal precision, didn't just funnel Davran’s *power* into Minal; it funneled the *curse* as well. The fatal Sandglass Curse, searching for its next victim, now had a direct, unobstructed path into the screaming woman. Minal’s ecstasy turned to an agonizing shriek. The black sand surged out of the dark pool and tore straight through her flesh, surfacing as jagged, obsidian lines under her skin. Her expression warped, stripped bare by pure panic. “What have you done?” she choked, her voice cracking. The subterranean vault began to cave in. Massive chunks of lapis lazuli broke loose from above, plummeting to the floor. Minal's body, locked within obsidian fissures, hardened into solid mineral. Her final scream snapped shut as she petrified—a glittering, jet-black glass effigy trapped mid-gasp, hollowed by the curse. Davran stirred against Jahira, pure instinct dragging him upright. As a massive slab broke away overhead, he gathered what remained of his battered strength, throwing his frame over Jahira to shield her as the ceiling smashed down around them.
