Chapter 4 of 10

Champagne and Shrapnel

Farah’s voice, a crackling whip of static, snapped through the lab. “Zoya! Get out of there! We have multiple hostile breaches on the lower levels. Corporate hit squad. They’re wearing the colors of the ‘Chrysalis Syndicate’ – Navid’s new backers!” Kian’s hand remained flat against the centrifuge, his body a solid barrier. His eyes, dark as an unlit void, drilled into Zoya. “Navid’s people? They’re here to finish what they started, aren’t they? And you’re still not answering me, Zoya.” Zoya blinked, her carefully constructed cheerful facade wavering for a fraction of a second, then snapped back into place. She giggled, a bright, tinkling sound that seemed utterly out of place amidst the blaring alarms now echoing through the Spire. “Oh, Kian, darling, you look so serious! It’s just a little bit of unexpected excitement, isn’t it? Like a surprise party, but with more… aggressive party favors.” She wriggled playfully, trying to dislodge herself from his impromptu cage. “Aggressive party favors?” Kian leaned in, his knuckles whitening against the steel housing. “These are syndicate killers, Zoya. They won’t hesitate to put a slug through your skull to clear their line of fire.” “Oh, I know!” Zoya’s eyes twinkled with a mischievous glint. “That’s why we have to make sure they have a *really* bad day at work, don’t we?” She ducked under his arm with surprising agility, reaching for a comms panel built into the lab’s console. Her fingers flew across the interface, a flurry of precise taps and swipes. “Farah, are they in the main concourse yet?” “Approaching! Twelve of them, heavily augmented. They just blasted through the secondary retinal scanner. What’s the plan, Zoya?” Farah’s voice was strained, the sounds of distant plasma fire beginning to reach the comms feed. “The plan, my dear Farah, is to play a delightful game of ‘catch the syndicate asset’!” Zoya chirped, her glance sweeping the blue schematics glowing over the terminal. She locked onto the central rotunda. “Remember those delightful, *entirely non-lethal* foam-deploying security drones that Kian’s engineering team was so proud of? The ones designed for… *crowd control* at corporate galas?” Silence from Farah, then a slow, dawning realization. “The ‘Party Poppers’? Zoya, those things are… they just douse people in sticky, brightly colored, rapidly expanding insulation foam. They don’t even shock them!” “Exactly!” Zoya clapped her hands together, a burst of infectious energy. “Imagine the *humiliation*! Kian, love, do tell your automated defense grid to reroute all incoming hostiles into Sector Gamma-7, please. That’s the grand rotunda, yes? And Farah, prep the ‘Party Poppers’ for maximum deployment in that sector. Think of it as… high-stakes laser tag!” Kian stared at her, brows drawn together. The woman was not just mad; she was actively *enjoying* this. He could hear the escalating gunshots, the shouts of the intruders, the thud of heavy boots. This was a siege, and his wife was planning a foam party. Yet, there was an undeniable, chilling competence in the way her fingers danced across the console, overriding his own systems with an ease that spoke of deep, intimate knowledge. His fingers keyed the defense grid override, funneling the targets along the perimeter path she designated. “They’re in Gamma-7, Zoya!” Farah yelled, a hint of maniacal glee in her tone now. “Deploying Party Poppers! Hope those Chrysalis guys brought extra outfits!” Through the Spire’s feed, Zoya watched beside Kian as the hit team, clad in dark polymer plating and carrying tactical carbines, stormed into the marble expanse. They were a terrifying sight, until the first bright yellow foam burst from a ceiling vent. A muffled curse cut through the comms, followed by the drone firing its payload, blanketing an operative from helmet to boots in sticky azure paste. The marble floor degenerated into a slick, technicolor trap. Hardened killers slipped and slid, their high-tech weapons useless as they became encased in vibrant, fluorescent goo. One burly mercenary roared in frustration as a drone plastered a glob of neon green foam directly over his optical implants, blinding him instantly. Zoya dissolved into peals of laughter, clutching her stomach. “Oh, that’s just *priceless*! Farah, tell the clean-up crew to bring extra solvents! And maybe some glitter for good measure!” Kian watched, dumbfounded. The most dangerous corporate hit squad in Omid-City, rendered utterly incapacitated and utterly ridiculous. He turned to Zoya, who was still chuckling, her eyes bright with unadulterated amusement. “You… you did this.” “Well, sweet husband, someone had to!” She beamed. “Can’t have uninvited guests scuffing the marble tiles, can we? Now, if you’ll excuse me, I believe a mimosa is in order. All this excitement makes a girl thirsty!” Hours later, the Zenith Spire hummed with an almost unsettling calm. The last of the foam-encased targets had been dragged out and locked in Farzan security holding cells. Zoya, still radiating an aggressively cheerful energy, supervised the final stages of the cleanup, a crystal flute of sparkling amber liquid in hand. Kian observed her from a shadowed alcove, a fresh layer of confusion settled over his usual weariness. He had never encountered anyone like her. She was a paradox, a bubbly socialite who could orchestrate the downfall of a corporate strike team with the casualness of ordering brunch. Just as Zoya was instructing a drone to scrub a particularly stubborn patch of cerulean foam from a crystal chandelier, the Spire’s entrance chime resonated through the hall. Zoya’s smile tightened almost imperceptibly. “Ah, speak of the devil, and she shall arrive, probably wearing something entirely too expensive for a ‘wellness check’.” The grand doors swung open, revealing Yasmin Rostami, radiant and smug, draped in a shimmering gown of midnight blue synth-silk that clung to her reborn figure like a second skin. Her arm was linked with Navid Shirazi, who looked equally self-satisfied in a bespoke suit. His gaze, however, swept the polished floor tiles, checking corners for scorch marks or broken glass. “Zoya, darling! We were so worried!” Yasmin’s voice dripped with saccharine concern, though her eyes were sharp, calculating, already mentally inventorying Kian’s assets. “We heard about the… *incident*. Just wanted to make sure everything was alright. Kian, you poor, dear man, you must be beside yourself.” She took a dramatic step forward, her high-heeled boot landing squarely on a small, disguised pressure plate. It was one of the ‘Party Popper’ foam-mines, overlooked in the haste of the cleanup, armed for lingering messes. A muffled *pop*! A burst of vivid fuchsia foam exploded upwards, engulfing Yasmin’s lower half in an instant. Her expensive synth-silk gown immediately became a stiff, grotesque sculpture of expanding, sticky goo. Her expression, moments before smug and superior, twisted into a mask of pure, unadulterated horror. She shrieked, a sound of profound indignity, trying to pry the foam from her ruined dress. Navid stumbled back, his leather soles squealing against the tile to dodge the overspray. He brushed a speck of fuchsia foam from his sleeve with an irritated flick of his wrist. As he did so, a heavily encrypted datapad, thin as a wafer, slipped from his inner jacket pocket and clattered to the pristine floor. The screen, briefly unlocked by the impact, glowed with a complex biometric signature, a swirling pattern of neural pathways and viral markers. It was the exact, undeniable fingerprint of the engineered virus killing Kian.
