Chapter 7 of 10
The Overlord's Greed
759 words
“The Overlord… he’s going to tear the Earth Sovereign apart,” Mu Linxi whispered, her face pale beneath the flickering, harsh light. Her hands, usually nimble with crafting, trembled at her sides. The rock walls groaned, a deep rumble vibrating through the marrow of the creatures gathered behind them. The jade-plumed crane shrieked, a sound of primal fear, flapping its wings against the claustrophobic space.
“We’re too late!” Chen Rui gasped, his voice cracking. The youth had followed Qisheng alongside the other refugees. The floor beneath their feet pitched sharply, sending a shower of loose rock cascading into a newly opened fissure.
Qisheng stepped into the vast vaulted hall, Mu Linxi at his shoulder and the procession of creatures close behind. Suspended above jagged rift-stone at the chamber's heart, bathed in a vortex of stolen amber breath, hovered the academy's Patriarch, Cang Xu. His long white hair whipped like torn silk across his shoulders.
Cang Xu floated amidst the stolen vitality, his robes billowing as if caught in an updraft. The subterranean marrow, ripped from Ao Shen’s core, surged through the elder, smoothing the wrinkles across his throat. A cruel smile stretched across his lips. “Ah, the little gardener,” he boomed, his voice distorted by the plunder. “And his collection of wretched failures and strays. Have you come to witness true apotheosis? The ascent of a god?”
The air around Cang Xu crackled, heavy with the stolen life force. The very essence of the land pulsed with his insatiable desire. He extended a hand, and a small, delicate flower, growing precariously from a crack in the cavern wall, instantly withered to dust. “Your ‘sanctuary,’ Fan Qisheng? A fool’s paradise. The weak, the outcast, the beasts—they are merely kindling. Fuel to be burned by the strong, powering the worthy to transcend this pitiful realm!” He threw his head back, a laugh tearing through the chamber, a sound devoid of mirth, filled only with triumph and contempt.
The ground shook violently again, a deafening crack echoing from deep below. Bits of crystal snapped from the flues, dissolving into raw vapor before striking granite. Ao Shen’s agony was a sharp, piercing throb in Qisheng’s mind. The Sovereign was being bled dry.
Mu Linxi ground her teeth and snapped her wrists forward, igniting a flurry of paper slips between her fingers. Not defensive glyphs, but volatile combustion seals. “Then burn, you parasite!” she yelled, slinging them toward the swirling amber vortex. The papers streaked like red sparks directly toward Cang Xu.
The Patriarch merely scoffed. A wave of inverted pressure surged outward from his ribcage, detonating the slips mid-flight. Rather than scattering harmlessly, the concussive fire ricocheted backward, amplified by the plundered leylines and screaming straight toward Mu Linxi and the huddled fauna.
Mu Linxi raised her forearms. The jade crane spread broad wing-feathers over the badger, while Chen Rui froze in terror. Blistering heat rushed over the stones, threatening to turn cloth and marrow to cinders.
Qisheng lunged between them. He did not call upon the Ledger or harvest the cavern's thinning air; he threw his frame across Mu Linxi, the animals, and the students. The rebound hammered his chest like an iron battering ram. Searing pressure shredded his hemp tunic, blistering skin and scorching muscle down to the bone. Pain tore an involuntary cry from his teeth as blood sprayed over charred slate.
His knees buckled, but he refused to fall. His vision blurred, the pain a white-hot agony that consumed everything. Yet, through it all, one thought burned clear: *No. Not one more. No more innocent lives will be sacrificed for this elite greed.* He would not allow it. Not after everything Ao Shen had endured. Not after Mu Linxi’s curse. Not after the Enforcer Cranes’ suffering. Not after the bullied acolytes found their first glimmer of hope. He would stand, even if it meant being utterly consumed.
As the raw, golden power continued to pour into him, grinding his very essence, a strange resonance began. It was not the cold, bureaucratic pulse of the Karmic System, but a chorus of quiet reverence. The jade-plumed crane, its eyes wide with alarm, pulsed with a gentle, emerald light. The badger glowed an earthy brown beneath crane feathers. Chen Rui and the novices pressed hands together, their humble auras converging not upon Qisheng’s wounds, but into the ethereal bamboo scroll unrolling across his fading vision.
