Chapter 1: The Raw Frequency

1.2k words

Heavy bass rattled the double-paned glass walls of Studio A, vibrating straight through the soles of my worn sneakers. Sweat clung to the back of my neck, icy under the aggressive blast of the ceiling vents. Red digital numbers on the main console blinked 3:14 AM, mockingly reminding me that my career was on a countdown. "Just one more tweak," I muttered to myself, dragging the cursor across the glowing monitor. Blue light from the dual screens washed over my tired face, throwing harsh shadows across my cheekbones. Nothing I did sounded right tonight. My fingers hovered over the master fader, trembling slightly before I pulled it down. Silence rushed into the room, heavy and suffocating. Damian Cross didn't pay for silence. He paid for hits, raw and uninhibited tracks that dominated the late-night airwaves and filled dark clubs. His label had hired me to bring a polished pop sensibility to his upcoming album, hoping to crossover into the global charts. Instead, I was drowning in his world of heavy, slow-tempo beats and explicit promises. If I failed to deliver a hit single by the end of the week, my contract would be nullified. Marcus, my manager, had made that brutal reality crystal clear during our frantic phone call at midnight. "They will replace you in a heartbeat, Elena," Marcus had warned, his voice sharp with anxiety. "Damian has a dozen producers begging to work with him, and you're giving him elevator music." Frustration boiled in my chest, hot and suffocating as I stared at the sterile audio waves on the screen. Standing up from the leather desk chair, I paced the length of the soundproofed room. Six months ago, I would have had no problem tapping into the dark, sensual energy his music demanded. That was before the night of the Billboard afterparty in Los Angeles. Memory of that night still burned against my skin like a brand. He had cornered me in the VIP lounge, away from the flashing cameras and the noise of the crowd. His breath had smelled of expensive bourbon and sweet tobacco as he leaned down to whisper in my ear. Rough calluses on his fingertips had brushed my collarbone, a fleeting touch that made my entire body shiver. Terrified of crossing a professional line with the industry's biggest star, I had panicked and fled into the rain. Since then, we had only communicated through intermediaries, a wall of cold professionalism keeping us apart. Now, I was alone in his private Atlanta studio, tasked with creating the very passion I was running from. Rubbing my temples, I forced myself to sit back down in front of the massive SSL mixing board. Classical piano had been my life before I fell into production. Years of rigid training, of perfect scales, and of strict metronomes had conditioned me to seek perfection. Damian, on the other hand, was pure instinct. Polished mahogany racks of vintage compressors and preamps glowed with a warm orange hue along the back wall, a sharp contrast to the cold digital screens in front of me. Inside the vocal booth, a gold-sputtered Neumann microphone hung like a silent executioner. Clicking the play button, I let the instrumental track wash over me once again. Synths glided smoothly over a crisp, computerized drum beat. It was clean. And it was completely devoid of soul. Lyrical draft on my notepad was just as pathetic. "I want you close, I need your love tonight," I had written in hurried, messy cursive. Scrawling a thick black line through the words, I tossed the pen onto the desk in disgust. It felt fake because I was trying to sanitize a feeling that was inherently dirty. My mind kept drifting back to the way Damian's voice sounded in my headphones, that smoky, effortless baritone that could make any woman melt. Working with him was a constant test of my professional resolve. Every track he sent me felt like a personal provocation, a challenge to see if I would finally break. --- Suddenly, the heavy mahogany door of the studio clicked open. Cold air swept into the room, bringing with it the scent of wet asphalt, heavy rain, and expensive leather. My heart leaped into my throat, hammering wildly against my ribs. Standing in the doorway was Damian. His wet black hair clung to his forehead, framing a face defined by sharp angles and a dark, brooding intensity. Dark eyes locked onto mine instantly, cutting through the dim red glow of the studio's accent lights. Slowly, he pushed the door shut behind him, the latch clicking with an ominous finality. Dressed in a dripping black leather jacket over a form-fitting black t-shirt, he looked like a storm that had wandered indoors. "Damian," I gasped, my voice cracking slightly in the quiet room. "You're supposed to be in Miami finishing your video shoot," I added, desperately trying to sound composed. Amusement flickered briefly in his eyes, though his expression remained otherwise unreadable. "Plans change when my lead producer is turning my record into a Disney soundtrack," he said, his voice a low, gravelly vibration. He walked toward me, his movements slow and deliberate, like a predator stalking its prey. Heat radiated from him as he stopped just inches from my chair. Leaning over my shoulder, he reached for the mixing board, his broad chest brushing against my back. Every nerve ending in my body flared to life at the sudden, intense contact. Clicking the spacebar, he played the track from the beginning, listening in absolute silence. Seconds ticked by like hours as the polished pop instrumental filled the room. Damian's jaw clenched, a muscle jumping under his dark stubble. He reached out and hit the spacebar again, killing the sound instantly. Reaching down, he picked up my leather-bound notepad from the console. My heart stopped as his eyes scanned the crossed-out lyrics. "'I want you close, I need your love tonight,'" he read aloud, his voice dripping with pure disdain. Dropping the notebook back onto the desk, he shook his head. "This is PG-13 garbage, Elena," he muttered, stepping closer until I could feel the cold dampness of his jacket. "It sounds like a teenager's diary entry." "It's a solid pop hook," I argued, my voice tight with defensive pride. "I don't sing pop hooks," he growled, his dark eyes flashing with sudden intensity. "I sing about sweat, about screaming, about the way a woman feels when she's completely undone." Distance between us was gone, his warm breath fanning across my lips. "You're playing it safe, Elena," he murmured, his voice dropping to a dangerous register. "I'm keeping it commercially viable," I argued, my voice shaking despite my best efforts to sound professional. "Commercial is for people who don't know how to feel," he snapped, taking another step forward. Backing up was my immediate instinct, but my hips collided with the hard edge of the mixing console. Trapped between his massive frame and the expensive equipment, I looked up into his dark gaze. His hand shot out, slamming onto the console right beside my thigh. Wood groaned under his weight as he leaned in closer, trapping me completely. "You're hiding behind the software," he whispered, his eyes dropping to my mouth. Breath caught in my throat, my chest rising and falling rapidly under his intense scrutiny. "I'm not hiding," I lied, looking away from his hypnotic eyes. "You are," he insisted, his free hand reaching up to touch my chin. His thumb was warm, gently but firmly forcing my face back to meet his gaze. Shivering, I tried to pull back, but there was nowhere for me to go. Six months of buried desire, of sleepless nights, and of writing songs about his touch came rushing to the surface. We were standing in a powder keg, and he was holding the match. "Write the truth, Elena," he urged, his voice like velvet sliding over my raw nerves. My hands reached up, pressing against his chest in a desperate attempt to keep some distance between us. "I can't write what you want because I don't know what you want from me," I whispered. Leaning closer, he inhaled deeply near my ear, his lips grazing the sensitive skin of my neck. Every muscle in my body went rigid, an electric shock wave shooting straight down my spine. "I don't think you're listening to the music," he growled, his hand sliding down from my chin to grip my waist. Whispering against my skin, he pulled me flush against his hard chest, erasing the last bit of air between us. My head spun as his grip tightened, his fingers digging into my hip with bruising force. "I don't need another hit song, Elena," he confessed, his voice dropping to a gravelly, raw whisper. Shock froze me as his dark eyes locked onto mine, burning with an unholy, predatory hunger. "I need you sexually."
