Chapter 7 of 10

Return of the Rivals

1.3k words

“Well, well,” Roshanak purred, her voice now a resonant echo that grated against the brass walls. “The little desert rat and her stray pet. Always causing trouble.” Her gaze, sharp as obsidian shards, impaled Shirin, then flicked to Kaveh, a sneer twisting her lips. “And you, Pishak. Still clinging to this pathetic existence, are we?” Pishak, usually a whirlwind of sarcastic quips, flattened his many ears. His usually bright eyes narrowed to slits, blazing with an ancient hatred. “Roshanak,” he hissed, a growl rumbling deep in his chest. “You defile everything.” Kaveh moved directly between Shirin and the encroaching terror. His snow-white mane bristled, and a low, guttural snarl vibrated through his powerful frame. Glacial ice began to form around his fists, shimmering with a cold, inner light. “She is not a rat,” he rumbled, his voice a dangerous counterpoint to Roshanak’s calm malice. “And you will not touch her.” Roshanak merely laughed, a sound like dry bones rattling. “How quaint. Still playing the protector, Kaveh? You were always so predictable.” She swept her crescent polearm in a wide arc, not at them, but at the very fabric of the station. A jagged tear ripped through the air, and from it emerged a creature of pure, ruby light. It was enormous, scaled like a desert serpent, with leathery wings that beat with a sound like thunder. Its eyes burned with the same stolen essence as Roshanak’s weapon. A serpent-beast, impossibly vast, unfurled itself, its maw opening to reveal rows of needle-sharp fangs. “A pet, then?” Shirin murmured, her eyes scanning the monstrous beast. It was made of raw magic, but she noticed the subtle, pulsing node at the base of its neck, a weak point, even in such a grand construct. Her mind, trained in emergency veterinary medicine, instinctively sought out vulnerabilities. “A *guardian*,” Roshanak corrected, her smile widening. “It feeds on the hub’s latent power. I imagine it will make short work of your little rebellion.” The winged behemoth roared, a sound that vibrated the very bones of the hub, and lunged headlong, its massive clawed hand aimed directly at Kaveh. “Pishak, any tranquilizers in the courier kit?” Shirin yelled over the din, already rummaging through the worn leather satchel she always carried. It had been upgraded by the System, but she’d never thought to check for *that*. “Are you insane?” Pishak screeched, darting to her side. “Against *that*? What good is a dart?” Kaveh met the charging colossus, a shield of crackling ice blooming before him. The impact shook the entire chamber, but he held his ground, grunting with effort. Shirin, meanwhile, pulled out a sleek, almost futuristic dart gun, its barrel glowing faintly. [SYSTEM UPDATE: Vet-Kit Enhanced. Tranquilizer Dart: Karma-Synaptic Suppressant. Potency x1000. Usage: One-shot knockout. Enjoy!] “Oh, you’ve got to be kidding me,” Pishak muttered, but Shirin was already aiming. Kaveh, noticing her intention, roared, shoving against the beast's immense strength, exposing its neck for a fleeting moment. With a practiced, steady hand, Shirin fired. The dart, a tiny silver needle, flew true, embedding itself precisely in the radiant node on the reptile’s neck. For a split second, nothing happened. Then, the beast’s carmine scales began to dim, its thundering roar turned into a confused whimper, and its massive body sagged. Its fiery eyes glazed over, and with a sound like a thousand crashing waves, the monstrous creature collapsed, its colossal form dissolving into harmless wisps of red mist, leaving behind only the scent of ozone and the bewildered silence of the depot. Roshanak stared, her mouth parting in disbelief. “What… what was that?!” she shrieked, her composed facade cracking. Her voice was no longer resonating, but a thin, furious squeak. “Just a little something from the vet-kit,” Shirin replied, holstering the dart gun with a smug grin. “Always carry your essentials.” Fury contorted Roshanak’s features. Her radiant runes pulsed with renewed power, and she raised her curved blade high. This time, there was no monster, no subtle threat. The blade, crackling with stolen essence, shot ahead like a scarlet comet, aimed directly at Shirin’s heart. It was a death blow, pure and simple, meant to end her interference once and for all. Shirin saw it coming, the familiar, awful trajectory. Her instincts screamed, urging her to step across, to take the blow, to shield the one she was meant to save. But before she could even take a breath, a blur of white fur and shimmering ice moved. Kaveh, faster than the eye could follow, threw himself in front of her. The blood-tinted edge slammed into his chest with a sickening *CRUNCH* that echoed through the hub. His meticulously crafted ice armor, the very manifestation of his protective power, exploded outwards in a dazzling shower of frozen shards. He gasped, a guttural sound, and stumbled back a step, one hand clutched to his chest, where a dark, seeping burn now marred his fur. Cold dread seized Shirin’s chest. She reached for him, her fingers brushing the singed fur. “Kaveh! Are you…?” He shook his head, a fierce light in his gold eyes. “I am fine, little nurse,” he rasped, his gaze fixed on Roshanak, pure venom in his voice. “I told you. I will protect you. Without chains.” The words were a defiant declaration, a promise whispered against the backdrop of Roshanak’s utter humiliation. The once enslaved beastman, who had once bound Shirin for her ‘safety,’ now stood battered but free, his only armor shattered to prove his unwavering devotion. The station workers, who had always viewed his kind with disdain, watched, transfixed, as Kaveh shielded Shirin with his own body, a stark contrast to Roshanak’s mindless aggression. Roshanak, witnessing her blow deflected by the very creature she deemed a mindless brute, screamed in incandescent rage. “You… you *filth*! How dare you defy me!” She swung her long polearm again, a flurry of desperate, wild blows. But Shirin and Kaveh moved as one, a dance of practiced precision. Shirin ducked under a wide arc, a healing salve already forming in her hand, pressing it to Kaveh’s wound. Kaveh, though injured, parried another swing with a sudden surge of ice, deflecting it away. They moved like the rivals they once were, each anticipating the other’s movements, covering blind spots, their synergy a powerful, silent language. Roshanak, seeing her carefully constructed image of superiority crumble, her grand leviathan dispatched by a dart, her lethal assault absorbed by Kaveh, felt an unprecedented rage boil over. She was the Multiversal Warden, the arbiter of fate! These insignificant anomalies would not make a mockery of her! With a primal scream, she plunged the shaft of her weapon into the floor of the terminal. The glowing runes on her skin flared, and the entire chamber began to groan, twisting and distorting. A black void, like a hungry maw, ripped open beneath Shirin and Kaveh, threatening to swallow them whole. It wasn’t just a portal; it was a collapsing pocket of nothingness, designed to unravel them utterly. “If I cannot kill you,” Roshanak snarled, her voice a raw shriek of hatred, “I will cast you into oblivion! No escape! No return!” The void roared, its edges crumbling, pulling at them with an irresistible, crushing force. Roshanak, her eyes burning with triumph, laughed. “Let’s see you save your little beastman from *this*!” [WARNING: Multiversal Anchor detected! Target destination: Null-Void. Inescapable!] The floor beneath Shirin and Kaveh gave way completely. They plunged into the inky blackness, the roar of the collapsing void deafening, the last thing they saw Roshanak’s manic, victorious grin as she deliberately, maliciously, pulled the very fabric of reality apart around them.
