A Collar of Ice

His voice, a low rumble that had once been a warning, now coated her name with a terrifying sweetness. Shirin stepped back, cold air stinging her throat as she measured the ruin she had wrought. This wasn’t the intense, wary gladiator whose trust she’d fought to earn. This was a broken, re-forged being, twisted into something monstrously devoted by her repeated sacrifices.
“Kaveh,” she started, her voice surprisingly steady, even as a tremor ran through her knees. The name felt alien on her tongue, too soft for the predator stalking towards her. “What… what have you done?”
He paused, a flicker of something she couldn’t quite decipher—confusion? annoyance?—crossing his features before settling back into that unnerving possessive glaze. “Done?” He tilted his head, the sound of his neck joints popping faintly audible in the sudden stillness of the derelict manor. “I merely removed an obstacle.” His gaze drifted to the mangled form of the vampire lord, a casual disdain in its amber depths. “He sought to claim you. No one claims what is mine.”
“Yours?” Shirin's voice sharpened, cutting through the chilling declaration. “I am not ‘yours,’ Kaveh. I am Shirin. A person. And you are scaring me.”
The words cut through his haze. His purr stuttered into silence, his irises dulling to tarnished brass. He stopped a mere arm’s length from her, the sheer force of his presence overwhelming. The air grew frigid, a sudden drop in temperature that had nothing to do with the drafty manor.
“Scaring you?” His voice was softer now, tinged with a bewildered hurt, like a child misunderstood. But the underlying current remained predatory. “No, little nurse. Never that. I would keep you safe. Always.”
As he spoke, the very air around them solidified. Wisps of frosted breath coiled from his lips, coalescing into shimmering strands. From his outstretched fingers, thick crystalline tethers of frost snaked forth, each link razor-faceted and radiating an iron chill. They caught the torchlight with diamond facets, unlike any elemental conjuration she had witnessed in the Sun-Forge Citadel.

Pishak, hovering overhead, shrieked. “Shirin! He’s trying to collar you! Like the citadel beastmen! He thinks if he pins your limbs, you won’t… you won’t leave him!” The winged fox darted about her ears, six green eyes bulging. “This isn’t safety, it’s a cage! Move!”
The frozen loops, thicker than her wrist, crept forward across the stone. They hummed with a deep, resonant energy. Kaveh’s face, etched with that possessive tenderness, offered no malice, only an unshakeable conviction. “With these, you will never be hurt again. No one will ever touch you. You will be perfectly safe. Forever.”
Shirin watched the creeping frost rings. The irony was a bitter taste in her mouth. She had died to save him from a collar, and now he was trying to put one on her, twisted by his grief and her own self-sacrificing flaw. This wasn’t about saving tragic characters anymore; it was about saving them from *her*. And herself from them.
“No, Kaveh,” she stated, her voice firm, unwavering. “Absolutely not. I am not a pet, and I am not a prisoner. You need to grasp this, right now.”
The frosty links stalled midair, held by his intent. His golden pupils contracted into slits. “Grasp what, little nurse? That you insist on throwing your life away for every stray? That you court death and leave devastation behind?” The accusation, though tinged with pain, was sharp. “I will not allow it. I *cannot* allow it.”
His brow hardened, and the frozen bonds shot toward her forearms. Shirin didn't flinch. She had seen this coming. This was her fault, and she had to fix it, even if it meant being cruel for a moment.

With a silent, sickening *thump*, Kaveh slammed into the flagstones. The ornate paving cracked beneath him, spiderwebbing outwards from his impact point. The suspended links dissolved into a spray of powder as his concentration shattered. He lay flat on his face, pinned against the ground with an unseen, crushing force, unable to move a single muscle.
Pishak blinked, then let out a delighted squeak. “Oh! Brilliant! A perfectly executed flattening!”
Kaveh grunted, a strangled sound of effort and indignity, trying to lift his head, but it was forced back down by the inexplicable pressure. His pale, rosette-marked coat, damp with slaughter, caught stone dust and cobwebs along his flank. He thrashed weakly, his powerful limbs rendered useless.
Shirin walked over, her boots crunching on the cracked stone. She knelt beside him, leaning in close, her voice a low, stern whisper. “Kaveh, you are acting like a very, very unruly snow-leopard. Do you hear me?”
His gaze locked onto hers, glazed with mortification. The feral intensity was gone, replaced by a dazed confusion. He resembled a colossal, disgruntled housecat caught stealing from the treat jar. A faint, distressed whine escaped him.
“Good,” she continued, pressing two firm fingers between his rounded feline ears as if calming a stubborn clinic mastiff. “Now, we are going to establish boundaries. About consent. And about the fact that I am not cattle to be tethered, no matter what your guilt dictates. Clear?”
He whimpered again, a low, rumbling sound that was more chagrined than threatening. His tail, usually held high and proud, thumped once, weakly, against the ground.
“And,” Shirin added, a softer note entering her voice, “we are going to talk about that terrifying, blood-soaked entrance. You can’t just go around murdering everyone who looks at me funny, Kaveh. That is not how we save people. That is how we *break* reality.”
As Kaveh lay there, slowly processing, a new message scrolled into existence above them, shimmering with an alarming crimson hue.

Pishak’s multi-eyed face went pale. “Oh, *stars above*! She found us! She’s using his grief as a homing beacon! Shirin, you have to make a choice, *now*! Lock Kaveh in a pocket dimension before they arrive, or we face her entire damn army!”
