Chapter 25: The Weight of a Single Step

1.3k words

The sprawling stone plaza of Valoria Academy’s main entrance fell into a sudden, eerie hush as the heavy, dark purple sphere of barrier magic hurtled through the air like a falling star. The volatile energy hummed with a low, oppressive frequency that made the teeth of the surrounding guards ache and caused Dean Alistair to squeeze his eyes shut in sheer terror. Professor Selena Thorne reacted with instinctive, fierce grace. Her crystal catalyst wand flared with brilliant emerald-green light, and she threw her arms forward, commanding the atmosphere to twist into a violent, protective gale. She intended to intercept the dark sphere head-on, to shield the academy gates with her own body if necessary, regardless of the personal cost. Yet, before her atmospheric gale could fully manifest, a heavy, unhurried tapping sound broke through the roaring wind. Clack. Clack. The sound of ivory on stone was deceptively soft, carrying no trace of magical amplification, no charging incantation, and no martial urgency. Yet, the moment that ivory-handled cane tapped against the flagstones, an absolute, suffocating shift rippled across the entire courtyard. The air itself seemed to thicken into amber honey. The raging winds died instantly. The dark purple sphere of barrier magic hurtling through the sky simply stopped mid-flight, hanging suspended in the open air as if it had hit an invisible, impenetrable wall of absolute law. The purple energy sputtered, coughed, and dissolved into harmless, grey wisps of smoke that drifted lazily away on the morning breeze. Lord Malakai—leader of the western delegation and a seasoned master of dark-elemental manipulation—froze in place. His smug, predatory smile vanished entirely, replaced by a sudden, cold sweat that broke out across his pale forehead. He stared at the suspended magic, his eyes widening in sheer, unadulterated disbelief. "What... what kind of abomination is this?" Malakai muttered, taking an involuntary half-step backward. "That was a high-tier compression ward! It shouldn't be possible to halt it without a counter-spell!" From the shadows of the colonnade, Nikolai Reindhart ambled forward. His dark fur-lined cloak swayed gently with his sluggish, dragging steps, and his hands remained deeply buried within his pockets. He looked as though he had just woken up from a pleasant nap and was mildly annoyed to find people standing on his lawn before he had finished his morning tea. He stopped a few paces behind Selena, letting out a long, heavy sigh that plumed into the morning mist. "Goodness gracious," Nikolai drawled, his voice carrying that familiar, irritatingly lazy cadence that made everyone within fifty feet want to either scream or bow. "Is all this shouting really necessary before breakfast? Some of us are trying to enjoy a peaceful semester of absolute nothingness, and you noisy gentlemen come waltzing through our gates throwing purple fireballs about like unruly children." Selena lowered her crystal wand a fraction of an inch, her stormy eyes darting sideways to look at Nikolai. Her heart was hammering against her ribs, a chaotic mix of profound shock, relief, and deep, stubborn resentment swirling in her chest. Once again, he had casually undone a catastrophic threat without breaking a sweat, reducing a high-stakes geopolitical confrontation to an annoying inconvenience. Malakai recovered his composure with a visible effort, his cold eyes narrowing into slits as he glared at the newcomer. He recognized the aristocratic cut of the fur-lined cloak, even if the face beneath the messy silver hair didn't match his expectations. "Ah," Malakai sneered, his voice regaining its sharp, aristocratic edge. "If it isn't the infamous Reindhart scion. The capital whispered that you had been exiled to this dusty academic backwater to rot away in obscurity. I see the rumors were correct; your family's useless heir has finally taken up vagrancy." Nikolai blinked lazily, tilting his head slightly to the left as if trying to recall where he had last heard such an uninteresting sound. "Vagrancy? Oh, no, my dear sir, you misunderstand completely," Nikolai replied, his tone dripping with profound boredom. "Vagrancy implies I walk around a lot. I assure you, my entire life goal is to move as little as humanly possible. In fact, standing here listening to you speak is already costing me precious minutes of horizontal recovery time." Malakai’s face flushed with dark fury. He raised his hand, gesturing sharply to the half-dozen elite combat mages flanking his delegation. "Insolent fool! You think a clever tongue will save you from the wrath of the western council? Obliterate him!" The combat mages didn't hesitate. Channels of dark, writhing energy flared across their arms, and they unleashed a simultaneous barrage of heavy, crushing earth spikes and jagged shadow-bolts straight toward Nikolai and Selena. Selena braced herself, raising her wand to cast a defensive cyclone, but she didn't even need to lift her arm. Nikolai simply raised one hand slowly from his pocket, turning his palm outward toward the incoming barrage. He didn't chant. He didn't flare his mana core. He merely sighed. The moment his palm faced the onslaught, the ground beneath the western delegation trembled violently. A massive, silent wave of absolute, unyielding gravity—born from the passive weight of Nikolai's hidden 'Universal Teacher' and 'Limitless Versatility' traits—swept outward across the plaza. The earth spikes shattered into fine dust before they could even touch the steps. The shadow-bolts snapped out of existence like blown-out candles. And the half-dozen elite combat mages dropped instantly to their knees, gasping for air as a crushing, invisible mountain of absolute law forced them flat against the stone flagstones, unable to lift so much as a finger. Malakai staggered backward, his breath catching in his throat as his legs buckled under the residual pressure. He fell hard onto his hands and knees, staring at the ground in utter, paralyzing terror. "This... this isn't magic," Malakai choked out, spitting blood as the invisible weight pressed against his ribs. "This is... a god..." Nikolai lowered his hand, sliding it back into his fur-lined pocket. He looked down at the cowering noble delegation with a look of mild, sleepy disapproval. "Magic, physics, gods—you people love using overly dramatic nouns for very simple concepts," Nikolai drawled, shaking his head. "It's just bad manners to throw rocks where people are trying to walk. Now, I suggest you pick up your friends, turn around, and walk back out those gates before I decide to make this plaza a permanent seating area for all of you." The pressure lifted instantly. Malakai scrambled backward like a frightened animal, his face drained of all color. He scrambled to his feet, pulling his groaning, trembling combat mages up by their collars with frantic haste. Without uttering another single word of defiance, the western delegation turned tail and fled headlong through the shattered gateway, disappearing into the fog of the outer valley road within seconds. Silence reclaimed the main entrance plaza. Dean Alistair slowly opened his eyes, staring at the empty gateway in sheer, uncomprehending shock. Around the courtyard, students who had peered out from windows and archways stood frozen, their minds completely shattered by the effortless defeat of an elite aristocratic strike force. Selena Thorne stood motionless beside Nikolai. Her hand slowly lowered to her side, her knuckles white against her crystal wand. She turned her head, looking up at the lazy, weary silver-haired man who had just saved the academy from an international crisis. "You..." Selena whispered, her voice trembling slightly, caught between the old hatred she had carried for three years and the terrifying, incomprehensible reality standing before her. "What are you actually hiding, Nikolai?" Nikolai didn't answer her. He simply turned around, tapped his ivory cane against the stone, and began his slow, agonizingly deliberate shuffle back toward the East Faculty Tower, muttering complaints about how much energy it took to chase away uninvited guests before lunch.
