Chapter 5 of 10

The Villain's True Colors

1.5k words

“Who do I have to kill to fix this?” Zhevan’s voice scraped like steel over stone, his grip on Ruvani’s hand firm, almost bruising. His eyes, fixed on her face, promised ruin to anyone who had caused her this hidden suffering. The black blood on his gauntlet seemed to pulse, a tiny, accusing stain. Ruvani blinked. The raw intensity in his gaze was utterly unlike the polite admiration or bewildered confusion she usually received. It threatened to burn straight through her carefully constructed facade. Her airhead persona, usually so effortless, almost faltered. The instinct to simply tell him everything, to lean into that strength, was surprisingly potent. But the multiverse didn't run on raw emotion. It ran on precise alchemy and strategic, cheerful chaos. And the blood, while alarming, was just a symptom of her *own* reckless disregard for self-preservation, not something to be avenged. She tugged her hand free with a casual sigh, wiping the remaining black residue on her pristine white lab coat. “Oh, this? It’s just a little… spicy cough. Too many late nights brewing my new Super-Sparkle-Blast Potion! Totally normal for a dedicated alchemist, you know.” She offered a wink, her smile impossibly wide, even as a faint tremor ran through her fingers. “Nothing a good cup of chamomile and a new batch of rare ingredients can’t fix!” Zhevan’s expression did not soften. The pallid slate of his eyes remained hard, discerning. “Ruvani. Do not lie to me.” Her smile finally dimmed, a fraction. She met his gaze, then looked away, towards the broken greenhouse roof where the Spire's polluted sky stretched, an indifferent grey. “I’m not lying,” she murmured, her voice losing its usual lilt for a moment. “Not exactly. It’s just… complicated. And for now, the cure for *this* spicy cough involves a trip through the Nexus. We need to reach the Portal room, Zhevan.” She straightened her coat with a decisive snap, the chirpy facade sliding back into place with unnerving speed. “Ready for some dimension-hopping fun?” He watched her for a beat longer, his gaze lingering on the faint tremor in her hand, before finally nodding. The anger didn't dissipate, but it coalesced, sharpening into a lethal focus. If she wouldn't tell him who to kill, he would simply kill anything that stood in their path. They moved through the upper levels of the Spire, a labyrinth of abandoned workshops and humming conduits, with Zhevan a silent, unyielding shadow at her back. His presence was a constant, solid anchor in the chaotic sprawl, a comfort Ruvani hadn't realized she craved. They bypassed patrol routes, avoided automated defenses, and finally, after what felt like an eternity of stealth and calculated risks, reached a towering, circular chamber. Runes glowed with a sickly violet light across dark basalt walls, converging on a swirling vortex of emerald and void at the chamber's center—the Nexus gateway. “Bingo!” Ruvani exclaimed, her voice echoing in the vast space. “Just what the alchemist ordered!” Before she could take another step, a surge of raw, distorted pressure ripped through the air. The basalt floor pulsed, and a figure materialized in the vortex’s shimmering periphery. Tall, cloaked in ragged shadow-weave, with eyes that burned like embers in a skull, he wielded a polearm crafted from jagged volcanic glass and crackling, dark power. Kuzran. “You are not authorized to access the Nexus.” Kuzran’s voice was a guttural rasp, laced with an ancient, profound grief that seemed to vibrate the very air. “Jal-Teros will fall. No one leaves before it crumbles.” Zhevan reacted instantly. His sword, ‘Stormbreaker’, materialized in his hand, a humming blade of pure adamantine. He moved like a blurring streak of silver, meeting Kuzran's descending curved blade with a clash that sent sparks of violet and silver screaming across the chamber. The force of the impact buckled the floor, dust raining from the high ceilings. “Woah there, void-shepherd! Bit dramatic for a Monday, aren't we?” Ruvani chirped, pulling out a handful of what looked like shimmering dust from her pocket. She sprinkled it onto a nearby console, and a series of complex data projections flared across the air, displaying intricate resonance traces. Kuzran snarled, pushing Zhevan back with a burst of dark force. “Interlopers! You meddle with forces beyond your comprehension!” He lunged again, his polearm a blur, aiming not for Zhevan, but the Nexus gate itself, as if to seal it off. Zhevan, anticipating, intercepted him, their blades ringing with furious intent. The air crackled with their conflicting powers—Zhevan’s honed martial aura against Kuzran’s raw, chaotic surges. Ruvani, meanwhile, ignored the clash entirely, her gaze glued to the data projections. The patterns were unmistakable. The tainted resonance radiating from Kuzran mirrored the twisted frequencies of the 'Holy Cores' Tazien had uncovered. Even more, it matched the residual rot she’d cataloged in Zhevan’s Gore-Blight, a spectral echo of consumed life force. [NEXUS GUIDE ALERT: UNFORESEEN VARIABLE DETECTED. Knew it!” Ruvani clapped her hands, a disturbingly pleased sound amidst the clangor of battle. “See, Zhevan? He’s not a villain! He's just… emotionally compromised!” Zhevan grunted, parrying another brutal strike, the black edge humming inches from his face. “Emotionally compromised individuals usually do not attempt to cleave me in half, Ruvani.” “Details, details!” With a sudden burst of speed that Zhevan hadn't known she possessed, Ruvani darted forward, her small frame surprisingly agile. She threw herself between Kuzran and Zhevan as their weapons were about to clash again, one hand raised, holding not a weapon, but a glowing, crystalline vial filled with a shimmering, iridescent liquid. Both men froze, their weapons hovering mere centimeters from her head. Kuzran’s ember pupils dilated in sudden shock, the dark haze around him flickering in confusion. Zhevan let out a strangled sound, his fingers locking around Stormbreaker, ready to cleave Kuzran apart if he moved. Ruvani, utterly unfazed by the imminent danger, tapped the vial. “Just as I suspected! You’re not trying to destroy Jal-Teros, Void-Shepherd. You're trying to **free** it. Or rather, you’re trying to free the tormented souls *within* it, aren't you?” Her voice softened, losing its bubbly edge for the first time Zhevan had ever heard. “Your crusade… it's not slaughter. It's an agonizing, desperate plea. You’ve become a conduit for your people’s consumed souls, haven’t you? You’re not a monster, Kuzran. You’re a symptom. A survivor, consumed by the very tragedy you’re fighting to avenge.” Kuzran stared, his long blade slowly dipping toward the flagstones. The raw grief on his face, previously masked by fury, became starkly clear. He looked at Ruvani not with hatred, but with a bewildered, broken despair. The black vapor around him receded, revealing a gaunt, drawn face beneath the shadow-weave hood. “How… how could you know?” His voice was barely a whisper, devoid of its previous menace. “Oh, well, it’s all in the quantum entanglement of soul markers and tainted ethereal resonance!” Ruvani reverted instantly to her cheerful, overly technical persona, though her eyes held a new, fierce light. She uncorked the vial. “But the good news is, I’m developing a cure! A complete overhaul of the multiverse’s magic system might be needed, but hey, a girl’s gotta have hobbies, right?” Kuzran’s gaze flickered between the vial and Ruvani's face, a flicker of something akin to hope dawning in his hollow eyes. “A cure?” He rasped. “For… for *them*?” “For all of them!” Ruvani beamed. “But I need some very specific ingredients from the Corrupted Realms for the final synthesis. And lucky you, you’re connected directly to them via the Nexus, aren’t you?” She gestured to the swirling portal. “So, how about a quick trip? I promise I won’t break anything… much.” Kuzran took a shuddering breath, his body trembling. He lowered his scythe fully, and the dark energy dissipated, leaving him looking less like a harbinger of doom and more like a man burdened by an unbearable sorrow. “The shattered domains… they are not for the faint of spirit, little alchemist. Your true nature… your vulnerabilities… they will be laid bare the moment you step through. The Nexus will strip away all pretenses, all masks. You will be exposed. And those wastes… they prey on weakness.” He looked at Zhevan, then back at Ruvani, a grim warning etched onto his face. “Are you truly willing to pay that price?” Zhevan’s eyes snapped to Ruvani, the implication clear: her carefully maintained bubbly persona, her airhead disguise, would vanish, leaving her utterly exposed. He knew she harbored secrets, but this… this was more profound. His fist tightened on Stormbreaker. He had vowed to protect her, but if her own power was stripped away, if her true self was revealed to those hostile realms, how could he shield her from herself? The choice was impossible: save the multiverse, or save the last vestiges of her privacy and safety.
