The White Lotus Wilts

The Vault-Juggernaut shrieked, a sound like grinding tectonic plates, and lashed out with a multi-jointed limb tipped in a drill-like claw. It moved with surprising speed for its bulk, aiming directly for Ruvani. Zhevan didn't think. An unfamiliar, searing heat surged through his veins, a raw power that felt both alien and utterly his own. He moved, faster than he ever had, a blur of motion before the creature’s claw could even cleave the air where Ruvani had been. His gauntleted fist, charged with an invisible force, slammed into the beast's arm. The armored limb, thick as an oak tree, shattered with a report that echoed across the plains, spraying volcanic rock shards like shrapnel. The beast roared, swiveling its massive head, its crimson eyes narrowing. It lunged, its colossal maw opening, revealing rows of obsidian teeth that could shear through fortified walls. Zhevan met it head-on. The new strength was intoxicating, making his muscles sing. He felt a primal joy in the pure, unadulterated power coursing through him. He dodged the initial snap of its jaws, then planted his feet, driving a shoulder into the creature’s lower jaw. The monstrosity stumbled, a guttural groan ripping from its throat as its balance failed. Zhevan didn’t hesitate. He vaulted onto its back, a spear of pure energy coalescing around his hand, and plunged it into the beast’s skull. The creature convulsed, a final, deafening shriek tearing through the air before it crashed to the ground, kicking up a colossal cloud of toxic dust. Ruvani blinked. She watched the dust settle, then picked a small, surprisingly intact shard of volcanic rock from her neatly braided hair. “Well, that was certainly… energetic,” she mused, taking another sip of her tea. “Feeling better, Sir Knight?” Zhevan stood over the downed behemoth, chest heaving, his mind reeling. The colossal fiend, a terror that typically required an entire Spire Battalion and heavy siege weaponry to fell, lay broken beneath him. He had done it with his bare hands, feeling stronger than he had before the corruption had even touched him. The black veins were gone, replaced by a vibrant, almost humming energy. He looked at Ruvani, who was still sipping her tea as if she’d just watched a particularly engaging puppet show. [SUCCESS! LEVEL-9 BEAST DEFEATED! NEW RECIPE ACQUIRED: ‘VOLCANIC HEARTBLOOD ELIXIR’.] “My strength… it’s doubled,” Zhevan rasped, his voice raw. “That cure… what was it?” Ruvani merely smiled, a bright, unconcerned expression. “Just a little something to help you feel spry. Wouldn’t do for my new bodyguard to be sluggish, now would it?” She gestured to the smoking carcass. “Come along, then. We have an audience to interrupt.” Ascending the Spire of Jal-Teros meant navigating a labyrinth of wind-whipped sky-bridges and automated ascent-lifts, each level a distinct world of its own. Zhevan, still reeling from his resurrection and newfound power, followed Ruvani as she hummed a tuneless melody, entirely unfazed by the sheer drops or the occasional monstrous shriek from the mist below. They emerged into the Plaza of Whispers, a vast open-air forum several hundred levels above the plains, where thousands of armored knights, civic leaders, and robed Inquisitors stood in solemn assembly. A hushed silence permeated the air, broken only by the distant thrum of the Spire’s central reactor. At the focal point of the plaza, bathed in a dramatic shaft of synthetic sunlight, stood Mezali. Her usually pristine white robes were artfully smudged with what looked like ash, her hair dishevelled just so, framing a face twisted in exquisite sorrow. She clutched a small, ornate ‘Holy Core’—a pulsing, crystalline artifact—to her chest. Tears, perfectly timed, trickled down her cheeks as her voice, sweet and trembling, carried across the plaza. “My dearest Zhevan,” Mezali sobbed, her words resonating with manufactured grief. “Your sacrifice… it saved us all. The rot was pushed back, thanks to your valiant last stand. This Holy Core, a fragment of the Nexus itself, I accept it on behalf of your boundless courage, a mere token for the countless lives you preserved.” Her gaze swept across the crowd, milking every ounce of pity. “May your soul find peace, our brave, departed Vanguard.” A collective sigh rippled through the onlookers. Several junior knights openly wept. Rage flared through Zhevan's chest. The brazen theft of his merits burned hotter than any infection. He took an involuntary step forward, a growl rumbling in his chest, ready to expose her lies then and there. Ruvani, however, put a hand on his arm, her grip surprisingly firm. “Oh dear,” she chirped, her voice just loud enough to cut through the solemnity. “It seems someone’s having a rather dramatic morning, isn’t she?” With a theatrical flourish that could only be deliberate, Ruvani suddenly ‘tripped’ over her own feet, letting out a small, high-pitched gasp. A delicate glass vial, filled with a shimmering, iridescent fluid, flew from her hand. It arced perfectly through the air, landing not on the ground, but splashing directly onto Mezali’s pristine white robes, right over her left hip pocket. The iridescent fluid immediately began to fizz and dissolve the fabric, revealing the contents of the pocket beneath. There, nestled securely, was another vial. This one was larger, filled with a viscous, dark green liquid—a potent, highly sought-after anti-toxin, specifically effective against the Gore-Blight. The very antidote Mezali had claimed was impossible to procure, the one she had allowed Zhevan to fight without. The crowd gasped, murmurs rippling outward across the plaza stone. Mezali’s tearful expression froze, her face turning ashen as her carefully constructed façade began to crumble. “Oh, my heavens!” Ruvani exclaimed, clasping her hands to her mouth, her eyes wide with feigned innocence. “How clumsy of me! I do apologize, Lady Mezali. That’s just a little reactive solvent I was experimenting with. But… what’s that in your pocket? It looks rather important!” Before Mezali could stammer a denial, a figure detached itself from the shadows of the Inquisitorial Guard. Tazien, his obsidian armor gleaming, his face a mask of rigid disapproval, stepped forward. His eyes, sharp as honed blades, went from the revealed antidote to Mezali’s horrified face, then to Zhevan, standing very much alive, and finally to Ruvani, still radiating an aggressively cheerful aura. “Lady Mezali, that antitoxin is highly restricted,” Tazien stated, his voice devoid of emotion, though a subtle shift in his posture betrayed a flicker of grim satisfaction. “I’m afraid I must confiscate it for immediate analysis. And as for you, Sir Knight…” His gaze locked onto Zhevan. “Reporting indicates you were fatally compromised. Your presence here, alive and well, constitutes desertion in the face of the enemy. I am placing you under arrest.” Tazien’s hand moved to the hilt of his ceremonial blade, a silent command for the surrounding guards to prepare. [ALERT!
