Chapter 10 of 10

An Empire Built on Earl Grey

Zhevan moved before the echo of the Spire’s hum faded. He launched himself from the gantry, a blur of motion, his heavy plate armor a mere whisper against the air. The vast, empty space between him and the plummeting Ruvani stretched for agonizing heartbeats. His sight locked on her small form, limp and pale, falling into the vaporous chasms where the mist once thrummed with venom. His hand shot out, not in a desperate grab, but with the practiced precision of a knight seizing a banner in a gale. His gauntlet closed around her forearm just as the toxic miasma below began to churn, eager to reclaim her. A low, resonant rumble vibrated from Zhevan, a primal emanation of his awakened vanguard aura. It flared, not as a shield, but as a driving force, a controlled descent. The vapor parted around them, pushed back by an unseen barrier of pure resolve. They plummeted, but without the chaotic buffeting of uncontrolled freefall. Below, Tazien and Kuzran watched, immobilized by the terrifying sight. Kuzran’s spectral aura pulsed with contained alarm. Tazien, rigid as always, broke his stance at last, taking a single step towards the edge. Then, with a concussive thud that rattled the very foundations of the Spire, Zhevan slammed into the plains. He hit the ground with the coiled impact of a seasoned warrior, cushioning Ruvani against his chest, rolling once before coming to a stop, his body a bulwark against the impact. He lay there, Ruvani cradled in his arms, his breath coming in ragged gasps. The toxic mist, entirely purged from the plains, smelled only of damp earth. He pressed his ear to her chest, listening for the faintest beat, his heart a frantic drum against his ribs. It was there, a fragile flutter, but present. He let out a shuddering exhalation, the kind that emptied the lungs and soul of all fear. *** Sunlight, warm and buttery, streamed through a tall, arched window, painting stripes across a plush velvet rug. Ruvani blinked, the soft, woven canopy above her slowly resolving into focus. The bed beneath her was impossibly soft, smelling faintly of lavender and fresh linen. Not the metallic tang of an alchemical lab, nor the sterile scent of an infirmary, and definitely not the gritty dust of a warzone. This was… comfort. She sat up, pushing aside a silk duvet. Her body felt light, stripped of all strain. No ache in her bones, no phantom cough. Her soul, a concept she had come to intimately understand, felt whole, vibrant, humming with an unfamiliar tranquility. The chilling dread of Soul Shatter was gone. She patted her chest, then her hair. No black blood, no wild strands. She was… fine. Better than fine. As if summoned by her stirring, the heavy wooden door across the room swung inward. Zhevan entered first, no longer in scorched plate armor but in a tunic of deep emerald, tailored to fit his formidable frame. His raven hair was neatly bound at his nape, and his gaze, usually intense, now held an almost reverent softness. Behind him, Tazien, his inquisitor's robes replaced by elegant, slate-grey silks, offered a rare, slight smile. Kuzran followed, his customary dark, tattered cloak exchanged for robes of woven starlight, his expression thoughtful, his luminous eyes less haunted. “You’re awake,” Zhevan’s voice was a low murmur, filled with a quiet relief that resonated deep within her. “For how long was I… resting?” Ruvani asked, her voice surprisingly clear, entirely free of the raspy fatigue that had plagued her for weeks. “Three full cycles of the Twin Suns, Ruvani,” Tazien stated, his tone devoid of its usual rigid formality. “Long enough for the realms to adjust.” “Adjust?” Ruvani’s brow furrowed. “To what? What happened after…?” Kuzran stepped a little closer, his spectral presence now calming, no longer destructive. “After you purified the Spire’s heart, the Nexus itself reconfigured. It healed. The corrupting influence of the ‘Holy Cores’ vanished, severing the Empire’s false claim to authority.” “The Empire,” Zhevan finished, his voice gaining a familiar edge of steel, “was dismantled. Its lies exposed by Mezali’s own confessions. Its leaders, the true architects of the soul-harvesting, were dealt with.” His hand went to the hilt of a gleaming, unblemished sword at his hip. “Thoroughly.” “The people, the tribes, those whose souls were consumed…” Ruvani started, a thread of worry in her voice. “Restored,” Kuzran confirmed, a genuine, if slight, smile gracing his lips. “Your cure… it didn’t just purify, it reversed the damage. Their souls are free. Their traditions, their lore… we are helping them rebuild, stronger than before.” “The Spire, Jal-Teros, the Nexus,” Tazien added, gesturing vaguely. “They are no longer weapons of oppression. They are central hubs for cooperation, for knowledge, for trade. A true sanctuary, as you always wanted.” Ruvani stared at them, absorbing the impossible. An entire multiverse, transformed. An empire, overthrown. All in three days. “But… who is in charge? How did you…?” Zhevan, without a word, walked to the side of her bed. He knelt, his posture one of deep respect, of unwavering fealty. He gently took her hand, scarred and calloused from countless alchemical experiments, and pressed his lips to her knuckles. The gesture was tender, carrying a quiet devotion. “The Nexus chose its new architects, Ruvani. Its new Empress. We merely followed your grand design.” His dark irises held hers. “Do you require any more ingredients, my Empress? Any rare roots from the Net-Weave Swamps? Any forgotten herbs from the Sunken Spires of Xylos? We have secured them all.” Ruvani felt warmth spread through her ribs, distinct from the healing radiance of the Spire. She looked at Zhevan, at Tazien, at Kuzran, transformed from doomed side-characters into architects of a new, peaceful multiverse. She understood at last. They had built this new reality, this vast sanctuary, all for her. So she could, in truth, relax. Her trademark bubbly smile, bright and wide, spread across her face. She leaned forward, meeting Zhevan’s gaze, ready to close the distance between them. [NEW QUEST: THE DRAGON-KING’S FORSAKEN CONSORT REQUIRES A CURE FOR THE SHADOW-BLIGHT OF THE CELESTIAL REALMS. She eyed the steaming cup of Earl Grey tea that had appeared on her bedside table. “Well,” she murmured, taking a slow, savoring sip. “It seems even empresses don’t get to relax for long.”
