Siege of the Sanctuary

Shao Feng-Jiao’s eyes, once narrowed in fury, now gleamed with a voracious hunger that made his thin face look gaunt. The illusion of barren soil had shattered, revealing a riot of verdant growth. Amber flames licked the air from the colossal Sun-Flare Ginseng, their glow reflecting in his widening pupils. Moonlight Dew-Vines, thick as a warrior's arm, snaked over polished stone troughs, their leaves glistening with collected vitality. Fat, sleek beasts, their pelts gleaming, lay sprawled amidst beds of verdant herbs, their forms radiating health that bespoke years of careful nurture, not the weeks Rin-Hua had spent with them.
His gaze swept over the rejuvenated cripples: the fox, whose formerly matted fur now shone like polished amber; the crane, its one good eye sharp and bright; the turtle, whose shell, once dull and chipped, gleamed with an inner light. These were not the discarded, worthless dregs he’d cast aside. These were living treasures, absorbing the essence of flora that defied all known Heavenly Tiers. And the source? A barefooted yard keeper, standing before a simple clay basin.
“Impossible,” he breathed, the word a reverent curse. He took a step forward, then another, his previous intent to punish forgotten. “This… this is more than a garden. This is a treasury!” He spun around, his voice rising to a frantic pitch. “Enforcers! What are you doing? Seize these beasts! Secure these herbs! Every leaf, every root, every beast is now property of the peak!”
The two guards, clad in gleam-woven Frost-Silk armor and gripping Swords of Azure Flow, hesitated, their faces blank with shock. They were accustomed to Shao Feng-Jiao’s tantrums, not his sharp, frantic avarice. But the glint in his eye was enough. They drew their weapons, the blades humming with a frigid aura, and advanced, their movements practiced and swift.
Rin-Hua didn't move. She stood her ground, slender and unyielding, a solitary figure before Jin-Hai’s simple basin. The ink-carp, sensing the encroaching threat, stirred, a low rumble emanating from the water, vibrating through the clay. The rescued creatures, no longer docile, rose to their feet. The amber fox bared needle fangs in a silent snarl. The blind crane unfolded its vast wings, obscuring Rin-Hua for a moment, its sharp beak a threat. Even the three-legged turtle pulled its head from its shell, its ancient eyes fixing on the approaching enforcers with a surprising intensity.
Elder Pang Su-Yin scrambled up from the gravel, spreading her arms wide. “Shao Feng-Jiao, you cannot! These are creations of the true Dao! They are not yours to take!”
Shao merely laughed, a harsh, grating sound. “Dao? Nonsense! This is power! Power I will wield! You think a banished elder and a yard keeper can hide such wealth from the Cang-Wu Botanical Sect? Fools! This will elevate me beyond the Jade Pagoda’s highest masters!” He gestured grandly. “Take them! And that carp! It emanates a strange aura, perhaps a rare variant!”
The retainers, spurred by their superior numbers and Shao’s shouts, rushed forward. The bulky guard swung his Azure Flow blade in a wide arc towards the fox. The blade glowed with an icy sheen, capable of cleaving through stone.
But Rin-Hua was quicker. Rin-Hua's gaze caught the blade, the golden calligraphy flashing into existence before her. Without a moment's hesitation, she thought of the simplest, most harmless material she knew.

A soft 'pop' broke the courtyard. Kuan Li’s sword, mid-swing, vanished. In its place, a gnarled, brittle twig, no thicker than his thumb, snapped against the fox’s bristling fur, splintering into dust. The guard blinked, staring at the empty hilt in his grip, then down at the bark flakes.
“What sorcery is this?” he roared, bewildered.
The wiry woman lunged at the crane, her Frost-Silk armor gleaming. Rin-Hua’s gaze flickered, the golden script appearing again.

Lyu Mei’s elegant, light armor instantly sagged, transforming into thick, viscous mud that clung to her limbs. She stumbled, weighed down, her movements sluggish and clumsy as she tried to shake off the sudden burden. The crane, with a sharp cry, darted forward, its beak pecking at her face, forcing her to raise muddy arms in defense.
Shao Feng-Jiao’s manic grin faltered. “What have you done?!” he shrieked, his voice cracking with outrage. “My guards! My resources!” He hadn’t understood the 'curse' on his lotuses until now, seeing it applied to physical objects with such devastating speed.
Rin-Hua felt a slight tug in her core, watching the panicked guards flounder among the stalks. The golden words continued to manifest, dancing before her eyes, awaiting her command.

The bulky guard, still staring at his shattered hilt, crashed to his knees as his breastplate sloughed into heavy river mire. He grunted, struggling to rise, his face turning a furious red.

The woman's backup blade, still sheathed, turned into a dry willow switch and tumbled into the dirt. The rescued creatures, sensing the shift in power, pressed their advantage. The fox snapped at the man's ankles, drawing a sharp yelp. The turtle shoved its heavy shell against the woman's shins, pitching her headlong into a bed of glowing Star-Bloom Marrow.
“Stop them! Stop this madness!” Shao Feng-Jiao screamed, his face contorted in a mask of impotent rage. He snatched a discarded stone, the formerly potent Grand Arbor Eye, and hurled it uselessly at Rin-Hua. It bounced off Jin-Hai’s basin with a dull clink. He looked around wildly, his eyes darting towards the heavens, as if seeking divine intervention. “Sect Master! Sect Master, she defiles the sacred laws! She wields a power that defies the very heavens!”
As if in answer to his frantic plea, a sudden, oppressive silence descended. The vibrant hues of the sanctuary seemed to dim, swallowed by a vast, approaching shadow. The air grew heavy, thick with a crushing presence that stole the breath from every living thing. Up above, the midday sky, once a clear cerulean, darkened, swirling into an ominous vortex of bruised purple and charcoal grey.
A single, immense figure descended from the tempestuous heavens, its arrival heralded by a chilling gust of wind that whipped through the yard. He was cloaked in robes woven from starlight, his eyes like twin abysses. His presence alone was enough to make the very earth tremble. The rescued beasts, moments ago fierce and defiant, now whimpered, collapsing to the ground, paralyzed by an invisible, crushing force. Even Shao Feng-Jiao and his muddy guards prostrated themselves flat against the loam.
The Sect Master, Lord Shen-Gao, landed softly, his feet touching the ground with no more sound than falling dust. His gaze, cold and ancient, swept over the now-motionless sanctuary, over the vibrant herbs and the cowering creatures. It settled, finally, on Rin-Hua, who, despite the overwhelming pressure, still stood, defiant, before the basin of the grumpy ink-carp. His voice, deep and resonant, echoed through the suffocating silence, a pronouncement from a higher realm. “Child,” he rumbled, his gaze pinning her to the stone, “surrender the supreme treasures in your care. Now.”
