Chapter 10 of 10

Ascension of the Stuntwoman

924 words

His pupils, dilated and vacant, registered her words a breath too late. A flicker of confusion, then horror, flared in their crimson depths as the cold metal pressed further. He instinctively bit down, the immense power in his jaw meant for tearing flesh, not crushing a fabricated detonator. The muffled pop that followed was less an explosion and more a violent, internal implosion. His head snapped back, a guttural shriek torn from his ruptured mouth. A geyser of black blood erupted from where his jaw had been, showering Zovya in a hot, sticky spray. [RITUAL INTERRUPTED. PROXY CAGE FAILED.] The sphere of coalesced blood-magic holding Valka above the altar shimmered, pulsed violently, and then fractured into a thousand crimson droplets, vanishing as if it had never been. Valka, released from her ethereal prison, tumbled downwards, a small, terrified cry escaping her lips. Zovya didn’t hesitate. Even as Drazhan’s headless form convulsed, tendrils of knitting flesh already snaking outwards, she lunged. She twisted her body, extending an arm, her fingers brushing Valka’s small hand mid-descent. With a fluid motion, Zovya tucked her daughter against her chest, absorbing the impact with a practiced roll, landing lightly on the cold, obsidian floor beside the now-lit Ascension sigil. Blood. So much blood. Drazhan’s, thick and coppery, was already congealing on the polished floor. But his renewal was horrifyingly swift. A new jaw, slick and pale, was already forming, muscle and bone knitting themselves back together with sickening speed. His eyes, now burning with pure, unadulterated fury, focused on Zovya. He roared, a sound less vocal and more a psychic concussion that vibrated through her bones. Incandescent crimson energy burst from Drazhan’s chest, a surge of raw blood-magic, choking and violent. It slammed into Zovya, dragging her and Valka across the floor, straight towards the luminous sigil. Her back scraped against the rough obsidian, Valka clutched tight. This wasn’t just a push; it was an irrevocable pull, an invisible tether binding them to the heart of the ritual. Drazhan, still knitting muscle, staggered forward, his intent terrifyingly clear: he would reclaim his vessel, or what remained of it. Zovya braced herself against the relentless pull. Her stunt training, her years of fighting against gravity and momentum, kicked in. She saw Drazhan’s momentum, the overwhelming force of his magical lunge, and she knew. This was it. Not an escape, but a redirection. As the blood-magic threatened to engulf them both onto the sigil, Zovya pivoted. With a grunt, she used the very force that pulled her, twisting her body, and with a grappling throw honed in countless training falls, she heaved Drazhan's still-forming body. She didn't throw him away; she threw him *onto* the sigil. He landed with a sickening thud, his still-wet, nascent jaw scraping against the etched lines burning into the stone. A drop of Zovya’s own blood, a small cut from her earlier struggle, dripped from her hand, falling onto the edge of the sigil, beside Drazhan’s writhing form. [ASCENSION RITUAL DETECTED. VESSEL BLOOD ON SIGIL.] [ASCENSION TARGET?] Zovya’s eyes, fierce and unwavering, met Drazhan's. He had finished reforming now, but remained pinned, furnace-heat pouring off his skin. He struggled, a low growl rumbling in his chest, but the sigil held him. She looked down at her daughter, pale but safe in her arms. Her choice was not for herself. It was for Valka. It was for a world not plunged into an eternal, blood-soaked night. “Me,” Zovya stated, her voice resonating with a new, terrifying authority. “Target: Me.” The air shrieked, a sound of tearing reality. The radiant lines of the sigil erupted into a blinding pillar of pure white light that consumed Drazhan. His roar was cut short, twisted into a sound of utter agony and disbelief as the light swallowed him whole, drawing him inwards, dissolving his very essence. The immense power, the immortal strength, the centuries of accumulated dark magic, was not destroyed. It was funnelled. Redirected. Into Zovya. The obsidian manor groaned. Dust rained from the ornate ceilings. The very foundations of Drazhan’s citadel began to crumble, massive blocks of polished stone fracturing and dissolving into grey motes. The power surged through Zovya, not as a burn, but as a chilling, exhilarating current. It settled within her, a quiet hum of omnipotence, a vast ocean of strength she hadn't known she was capable of holding. She looked down at Valka, still clutching her tight. The child’s white hair seemed to shimmer, the last vestiges of the proxy curse fading into the newly forming dawn light. With a final, resonant crack, the entire citadel imploded, collapsing inwards, then outwards, a magnificent, terrifying cloud of ash and dust, leaving nothing but an empty, scarred expanse of moorland. Zovya stepped out of the dissipating dust, Valka nestled securely against her shoulder. The oppressive fog had finally lifted, replaced by the crisp, cool air of a nascent morning. The rising sun, a pale, hopeful orange, painted the eastern sky. She walked until she found a small, still lake, its surface reflecting the pristine light. She leaned down, Valka peering over her shoulder, and looked into the water. The bloody, dripping text of the System was gone. Vanished. Only her own reflection stared back. Her eyes, usually a fierce hazel, now held a faint, sovereign red, a subtle echo of the power that now resided within. A small smile, triumphant and serene, touched her lips. This new life, this new power, was hers. And Valka’s. And together, they would finally escape Ghulven, leaving the nightmare behind, forever.
