Chapter 5 of 10
The Foundry Gauntlet

The roar of the crowd was a physical force, vibrating through the reinforced floor of the Krovos Arena. Radomir Volkov stepped onto the polished, obsidian-black fighting platform, the collective shouts washing over him like a shallow tide. He felt nothing. Only the cold, precise calculations of the Protocol, already mapping out the vectors of attack, the optimal points of impact. The air, thick with the scent of synthetic sweat and ozone, did not stir him.
Above, in the ostentatious VIP lounge that jutted like a beak from the arena's upper tiers, Chairman Borislav of the Sanguine Bloom corporation leaned forward, watching his target. A thin, self-satisfied smile stretched across his lips. “Well, well,” he purred, his voice amplified only for the select few in his private lounge. “The little Volkov has arrived. Such a shame he’s about to depart.”
The arena lights, dazzling strobes of crimson and cobalt, momentarily blinded Radomir, then resolved into sharp focus. He scanned the faces, a sea of eager, bloodthirsty eyes. Most were fixated on the giant holographic display above the platform, which rotated through combatant profiles. His own flashed, stark and unadorned: `Radomir Volkov. Unaffiliated. Core Sigil: [Iron Heart Basics]`. A ripple of dismissive laughter ran through the crowd.
His challenger materialized from the opposite tunnel, a hulking figure named Krusov. The man bore heavy cybernetic modification, his frame thick with reinforced muscle, his forearms encased in polished steel prosthetics that whirred with hidden mechanisms. His Core Sigil, `[Shatter Arm]`, pulsed with a sickly green light.
“Look at this runt,” Krusov boomed through an internal vocal grill, “trying to play with the big boys. I’ll make this quick, kid. One hand tied behind my back.” He flexed his augmented arm, metal plates grinding with a screech.
Radomir remained still, his stance relaxed, almost casual. Inside, the Protocol was churning. `[Opponent: Krusov. Core Sigil: Shatter Arm (Complex). Threat Level: Low.]`
“The first bout of the tournament!” the announcer bellowed. “A preliminary clash! Krusov, the `Steel Crusher` from the Zarkov Syndicate, versus the unknown Radomir Volkov! Fighters, assume your ready positions!”
The brute lunged, a blur of augmented muscle and steel. His right arm swept in a wide arc, aiming to cleave Radomir in half. The air shrieked as the complex Core Sigil activated, sharp, serrated blades extending from his forearm sheath, glowing with that sickly green aura. The crowd roared, expecting the pulverization.
Radomir moved. Not with speed, not with flash, but with an absolute, brutal economy of motion. A single, perfectly weighted step shifted his body just outside the arc of the swinging blades. His left leg, seemingly without effort, swept up. It wasn't a kick of flair, nor one designed for showmanship. It was pure physics, raw power compressed into the most fundamental form.
His foot connected with the side of Krusov’s knee, directly on the joint where the artificial plating met raw bone. A sickening *crack* echoed through the arena, cutting through the crowd’s roar like a knife. The green glow of Krusov’s Core Sigil flickered, then died.
The giant collapsed, his leg twisted at an unnatural angle, the metal plates around his joint buckling inward. He hit the floor with a dull slap, a guttural groan ripping from his throat. The serrated blades retracted with a hiss. He lay there, twitching, unable to move.
Silence. Then, a collective gasp. The announcer was dumbfounded. Even Borislav in his viewing suite froze, his smug grin vanishing. His thin lips pressed flat, malice replacing amusement. This was not part of the script. Radomir’s unblinking gaze swept over the fallen brawler, then tracked up toward the glass booth.
`[Basic Technique 'Iron Heart Kick' has advanced to Level 100. Core Sigil 'Iron Heart Basics' has evolved to 'Centurion's Stride'.]`
`[Repetition x100 Complete. 'Centurion's Stride' has advanced to Level 2. Current Multiplier: x100.]`
Radomir waited for the next opponent. The crowd, slowly recovering from its shock, began to buzz. A single, basic kick. A level 100 basic kick that had just disabled a Foundry-sponsored titan.
His datapad, secured within his fighting tunic, vibrated against his ribs. He tapped the display, scanning the text. It was from Zofia, marked with a single deciphered header: `Project Red Spore. Decrypted.`
A breath caught in his throat, then smoothed out into calculated focus. He opened the file while the next challenger, a nimble knife fighter from the local circuit, stepped onto the platform.
`...invasive Core Sigil... designed to integrate with host cellular structure... primary fuel source: martial kinetic fluctuations... specific affinity for nascent Volkov development... accelerates maturation rate...`
The words aligned into brutal clarity. Milena. Her illness. The invasive Core Sigil. And his own exponential growth, the power he cultivated to save her, was nourishing it. Every surge, every hundredfold leap in strength, acted as a direct conduit, a fresh infusion of fuel into the entity consuming his sister. He was not racing against time; he was driving the clock forward. He was the feeder.
He had become the weapon pointed at his own family. The realization was a cold, bitter draught, turning triumph to ash in his mouth. He finished the knife fighter in three straight strikes, the movement automatic, his thoughts locked on the data.
Another challenger stepped up. Another collapsed. Each body dropped with mechanical precision, `[Centurion's Stride]` rising in rank after rank. Yet with each impact, cold certainty dug deeper: every blow tightened the cord around Milena's neck. Stopping would end the flow, but walking away meant starvation and execution under Borislav's network.
`[Core Sigil 'Centurion's Stride' has advanced to Level 32.]`
Radomir’s gaze settled on the high suite. Borislav was no longer smiling. He watched with a hard, appraising stare. He had known this from the start. This circuit was an accelerant for the Red Spore. Milena was the bait, and Radomir was the forge fuel.
“Ladies and gentlemen, we are down to our final two combatants!” the announcer’s voice thundered, pulling Radomir from his spiraling thoughts. “A truly unexpected champion has emerged from the preliminary rounds, an absolute force of nature! Radomir Volkov!”
The crowd roared, their initial disdain replaced by a frenzied respect for his brutal efficiency.
“And now, his final challenge! Sponsored by the premier corporate sector, a master of misdirection! Her Core Sigil, `[Veiled Shadow]`, is as elusive as she is lethal! Give it up for Zofia Rostova!”
Radomir froze. The name hit him like a physical blow. No. It couldn't be. The woman who had given him the datapad, who had warned him. His ally. His only contact. She walked out of the tunnel, the arena lights catching the subtle silver threads in her dark tunic. Her Core Sigil, `[Veiled Shadow]`, shimmered with an indistinct, wavering light. Her eyes met his across the arena. They were filled with an apology so profound it was almost tangible, a silent plea. Behind her, framed by the tunnel's entrance, stood two hulking, armored guards, their presence a clear, undeniable threat. Borislav had found her. He had forced her hand.
Her voice, usually a calm whisper, was amplified for the arena, yet it still held a fragile tremor. “Radomir,” she said, her hands already rising into a defensive posture, “I’m so sorry.”
