Chapter 8 of 10

Collapsing Dimensions

A guttural roar ripped through the arena, not from Vellonia, who now lay a crumpled heap of ash-streaked skin and whimpering fear, but from the Bastion itself. The ground bucked, a deep, grinding tremor that sent a shower of black dust raining from the ceiling. A jagged fissure, wide enough to swallow a wagon, tore open across the basalt, snaking directly towards the horrifyingly exposed Chronos-Core. The massive, crystalline heart of the prison, no longer merely beating, now vibrated with a deafening hum, its light intensifying to a blinding, painful brilliance. My body remained a rigid, screaming prison. Every muscle locked, every nerve afire with the agony of ruptured pathways. I could do nothing but watch, a helpless, paralyzed husk, as the very world around us began to tear itself apart. "The Core!" Daelis's voice cut through the din, sharp and reedy. He regained his footing, ignoring the falling masonry, pupils dilated as he locked onto the destabilizing artifact. His left arm, the one not currently bleeding from Gavrun's previous strike, shot out, arcane sigils already weaving in the air, a complex extraction spell forming with sickening speed. He was still trying to claim it, even as the walls bowed inward, groaning under the immense, failing structural stress. "No!" Pellok, small and terrified but resolute, launched himself forward. He surged forward with feral speed, a tiny projectile. He wasn't aiming for a grand blow; he threw himself low, tackling Daelis at the knees with all the force his scrawny frame could muster. Daelis, caught off guard by the unexpected, utterly unmagical assault, stumbled, his spell-weaving arm jerking violently, the nascent sigils dissolving into sparks. It was all Gavrun needed. The former vanguard, still staggering from Vellonia's Ashen assault, his armor scarred and smoldering, moved with a lethal grace that belied his injuries. His right hand, still coated in the residual, inky residue of Grave-Weaver magic, shot out, a blur of focused intent. He didn't hesitate. He didn't pause for theatrics. His hand slammed into Daelis's extended, casting arm with the sickening crack of bone and cartilage tearing. A clean, brutal severing. Daelis screamed, a sound of pure, unadulterated agony and outrage as his arm, still clutched in Gavrun's grasp, detached cleanly at the elbow, falling to the buckling floor with a wet thud. Blood, dark and arterial, spurted from the ragged stump, painting the crumbling stone in crimson. "You lunatic!" Daelis shrieked, clutching the gushing wound with his remaining hand, his face a mask of disbelief and pain. "You just… you just amputated me!" Gavrun tossed the severed limb aside, his gaze flat and stony. "You threatened Mazrin," he rumbled, his voice cutting through the tremors. "No further warnings will be issued." Pellok scrambled back, chest heaving, staring at the floor with trembling defiance. Daelis, clutching his stump, retreated three steps, an animal whimper tearing from his throat as his gaze fixed on the Core, now completely out of his reach. His mouth pulled taut, bile-green malice curdling beneath the shock. The ground beneath us groaned again, more violently this time. A section of the ceiling, a massive slab of dark rock, finally gave way, crashing down mere feet from where Vellonia whimpered in her own puddle of shame and self-pity. Dust, thick and chokingly acrid, billowed through the air, momentarily obscuring everything. Then, I felt myself being lifted. Gently, carefully, despite the crushing urgency. Gavrun’s arms, strong and unwavering, scooped me from the stone. The movement jarred my ribs, spikes of pain lancing through my paralyzed frame, but I bit back the sound, focusing on the hard plate of his chest and the faint scent of cold ash and loam. He held me close, cradling me against the tremors, his eyes fixed on me with an intense, possessive protectiveness that defied his own wounds. "Mazrin," he murmured, his voice a low thrum against my ear. "We must go." He began to move, not towards the crumbling exits, but directly towards the heart of the maelstrom: the Chronos-Core. Pellok, quick to follow, grabbed onto Gavrun's leg, a small, loyal shadow in the chaos. With every step, the Core's light intensified, burning away the shadows, forcing us to squint. It was no longer just a source of power; it was a beacon, pulsing with raw, unbridled temporal energy. Gavrun stopped just at the edge of the abyss, where the Core hung suspended, now fully revealed in all its terrifying glory. It throbbed, a colossal crystalline organ, its multifaceted surface reflecting the splintering stone of Nethkul. I stared into its blinding depths, into the very essence of time and fate. My vision, despite the overwhelming light, seemed to pierce through the shimmering layers. The numerical display on my wrist, burning a sickly, furious red, suddenly didn't feel like a simple timer. It felt like… a key. A sequence. Not merely counting down to my death, but synchronizing with something far grander, far more terrifying. An equation, vast and intricate, bloomed in my mind, an intuitive leap that bypassed my damaged pathways and struck directly at my understanding of reality. The countdown wasn’t a punishment. It was a lock. A precisely calibrated frequency, a resonance code tailored to my very soul. The Core, destabilizing, couldn't be simply extracted without annihilating this dimension and every soul within it. It needed a new anchor. A new vessel. It needed to be fused. With me. To extract the prize, keep Pellok breathing, and tear Gavrun free of this pit, I had to seize the mechanism directly. My soul would serve as the casing, or the clock would wipe us both. "Don't!" Daelis's voice, thin and raspy, clawed through the grinding stone. He was a bleeding mess on the ground, but his eyes, still sharp with a predatory brilliance, were fixed on me. "You'll burn to ash! Your soul… it will be annihilated!" His warning echoed as I reached out my trembling, paralyzed hand, compelled by a force beyond my broken body, towards the blinding, resonant light of the Chronos-Core. My wrist timer, now a searing brand, clicked once more. [00:00:00:01]
