Chapter 1 of 10

The Incubation Clause

928 words

The polished durasteel floor of the Apex Spire Penthouse reflected Marenna Thrace’s scowl with uncomfortable clarity. Her bio-engineered gargoyle-pug, Brick, left a trail of coarse, slate-gray fur across the pristine surface, each stray fiber a small act of defiance against Garreth Hyle’s absurdly sterilized domain. Brick snorted, a sound like gravel churning, and nudged her ankle, his three-pronged tail thumping a silent rhythm against her reinforced knee-guard. “Three million credits, Garreth,” Marenna stated, her voice slicing through the chamber’s oppressive quiet. “That was the agreement. For the... genetic asset, and the timely cessation of syndicate pressure on Kaelix.” She didn’t bother with pleasantries. This was a transaction, cold and clean, like the air in this cloud-piercing mausoleum. Garreth Hyle stood by a viewport that framed Tessera’s sprawling, weather-controlled districts like a digital map. His back was to her, posture as rigid as the syndicate bylaws he drafted. He was a silhouette against the sun-drenched cityscape, a monolith of control. He didn't turn. “The first installment has been transferred, Marenna. Your contact will verify.” Marenna’s comm-implant chimed. Kaelix’s frantic, relieved message flickered across her optical display. *“They pulled back! Oh, Marenna, thank you!”* Relief, a messy, inefficient emotion, threatened to worm its way into her own calculated calm. She crushed it. Sentiment was a structural weakness. “Excellent,” she replied, her voice flat. “Now, the remaining balance. Per our contract, upon successful term progression and verification by an impartial third party. I’m here. Log the status. Pay me. I walk out.” A disembodied voice, smooth as spun glass, filled the vast space. “*Scanning vital signatures. Initializing medical diagnostic protocol.*” Marenna bristled. “I didn’t consent to an AI scan.” “*Consent is implied through entry into a Level-Alpha Gestational Zone, Unit Thrace,*” the AI responded, its tone unwavering. A shimmer of sapphire light washed over her, an invisible current probing beneath her skin. Brick growled, a low vibration in his chest, his eyes, like chipped obsidian, tracking the light. Garreth finally turned. His face, usually a mask of glacial disinterest, held an unreadable intensity. His gaze flicked to her abdomen, then back to her eyes. “The Apex AI is not ‘impartial,’ Marenna. It is *mine*.” “*Viable asset detected. Fetal development: optimal. Placental integrity: stable. Gestational period: 14.3 weeks. Verified.*” The AI’s pronouncement echoed, clinical and absolute. Then, a click resonated through the manor, the distinct, heavy sound of automated locks engaging. Marenna’s hand flew to the door release, but the panel remained dark. “What in the void…?” “*Flight risk detected. Unit Thrace is now designated a critical bio-asset containment priority. All external egresses are sealed. Stress levels are being monitored.*” The AI’s voice was suddenly colder, less accommodating. Marenna stared at Garreth. “Flight risk? You told me this was a transactional agreement! You pay, I deliver, I leave!” Garreth walked to a sleek, onyx console. His fingers, long and precise, danced across a holographic interface. On the display, her most recent subterranean city blueprints – the designs that would have shattered his corporate monopoly – shimmered into existence. His next action was deliberate, merciless. He tapped a single command. An invisible wave of heat emanated from the console. The intricate lines of her designs, the elegant arches, the fault-tolerant support structures, curled inward, blackened, and dissolved into digital ash. He had just incinerated months of her life’s work. “Your stress levels are now company property, Marenna,” Garreth said, his voice a low hum. “As is your diet. Your sleep. Your every somatic imperative. We cannot risk any factor that might compromise the asset.” His gaze held hers, an icy, predatory gleam. “And the contract you so frequently cite? It contains a residency clause. You’ll be staying.” A delicate cough drew their attention. The foyer entrance, sealed moments ago, shimmered, revealing Sybilla Cort. Garreth’s fiancée, all elegant angles and polished charm, floated into the room, draped in a silk gown the color of twilight. Her smile, usually a weapon, was a touch too tight. Brick let out a low growl, a rumble of pure animosity, and shed a fresh cloud of fur onto a priceless, hand-woven Tesseren rug. “Darling,” Sybilla purred, her eyes flicking from Marenna to Garreth, a flicker of something Marenna couldn’t quite decipher in their depths. “Our guest has arrived. How… rustic.” She dabbed at her lips with a lace handkerchief. As she lowered it, Marenna caught a glimpse of something dark, an almost imperceptible smear of black liquid, vanishing into the fabric. Sybilla’s eyes, bright and calculating, met Marenna’s. “I do hope you’re settling in, Unit Thrace. Garreth and I have made such thoughtful provisions for your… temporary stay.” Marenna’s jaw tightened. “I’m not a unit.” Garreth stepped closer to Marenna, his presence suddenly overwhelming. He ignored the fresh shedding from Brick, who was now aggressively grinding his bristly back against Garreth’s impeccably tailored trousers. Garreth’s voice dropped to a near whisper, for Marenna’s ears alone. “Try to leave, Marenna. Or cause any form of physical distress to the asset. The AI will sedate you. And it will continue to do so, for the entire duration of your term.” Marenna swallowed a cold, sharp intake of air, fueled by furious, calculating rage. The cold, precise CEO she had known, the rival she had fought with architectural blueprints and corporate maneuvering, had vanished. In his place was something far more dangerous: a possessive, unhinged guardian whose every instinct now revolved around *her* body, *her* life, and the precious cargo within. She had severely underestimated him. This wasn't a transaction anymore. This was a cage, exquisitely gilded, and she was trapped.
