The canyon itself gargled, a sound of stone grinding against wet, straining muscle. What Isken had thought were geological formations now convulsed with a sickening, organic elasticity. Thousands of chimeric sensory pits receded into sockets as immense, milky spheres rolled open across the undulating stone-flesh. A low, guttural thrum vibrated through the rock floor, rattling bone-dust from Gavril’s skeletal frame.
Then a new sensation, ice-cold and invasive, slithered through the air. It wasn't the fog, nor the chill of the abyss. It was a psychic probe, sharp and hungry, a tendril of pure, viral intent. Isken felt it brush against his consciousness, cold and curious, before it veered, unerringly, toward Mireya.
Air caught behind Mireya's teeth as her fingers clamped around her rifle stock, knuckles blanched white. She stared upward, pinned by a cluster of weeping fissures that flared with violent crimson light. A filament, needle-thin and shimmering with virulent red, whipped outward from the titan's quivering mantle, lashing toward Mireya.
“It’s using the connection,” Isken snarled, his voice a low growl. “Her bloodline… her DNA. It’s trying to absorb her.”
“What do we do?” Fennic shrieked, fumbling with his Gatling gun, its barrel still smoking from the last barrage. The new Chimera-Beasts, resurrected by Isken, were already tearing into the King’s exposed musculature, their emerald glow painting the monstrous walls.
“Stalker!” Isken barked, his boot pivoting as Mireya swayed on trembling knees. The crimson filament whipped through the air toward her throat. “Intercept!”
From the stone above, a summoned ghoul-skulker dropped into the path, spectral claws outstretched. The crimson tendril punched straight through its incorporeal chest. The ethereal construct flared in an abrupt burst of green sparks, then disintegrated into ash.
Mireya stumbled backward against a boulder, coughing as the psychic pressure snapped.
Isken spat copper-tainted phlegm and glared at the canyon wall. “Pale Stalker,” he hissed. “Joints. Phase through the outer carapace. Sever the major articulations.”
The Pale Stalker, a silent wraith of green smoke, materialized from Isken’s shadow. It drew its spectral suppressed pistol, the weapon a whisper of nothingness, and vanished into the rocky, armored skin of the Marrow-King. Moments later, tremors racked the vast entity. Deep, internal groans rumbled, and new fissures spiderwebbed across what had been solid rock, revealing more pulsating flesh beneath. The King wasn’t just waking; it was writhing.
“Gavril!” Isken yelled over the cacophony of his firing army. “Get ready, you bony bastard!”
Gavril, weighed down by canisters of blasting gel and still trapped in his tattered pink ballet skirt, clattered beside Isken. “Ready for what, you grave-robbing maniac? More indignity? Is this where you make me dance for the meat-bags?”
“I’m making you useful,” Isken grinned, a wild glint in his eyes. He hauled up a cluster of demolition charges. “Gavril, you’re going on a trip.” He began strapping the charges, crudely but effectively, to Gavril’s skeletal frame.
“A trip? Where are we going? Is there a gift shop? I’m terribly thirsty, by the way, for a dead man.”
“You’re going straight into that thing’s brain, Gavril,” Isken said, ignoring the complaints. He finished securing the last charge, then hefted the protesting skeleton. “You’re a distraction, a bone-shrapnel bomb. Think of it as a promotion.”
“A promotion? To what, a fragmentation grenade with a poor sense of fashion?” Gavril shrieked as Isken swung him back, preparing to launch him. “You’re mad! This is highly irregular! My guild would never condone this!”
“Your guild’s dead, Krest! And you’re just ammo!” With a grunt, Isken flung Gavril, a pink-tutu’d, complaining projectile, directly towards one of the newly exposed neural clusters pulsating deep within the King’s colossal form. Gavril’s protests became a high-pitched wail that was abruptly cut off by a muffled boom as he slammed into the organic material, the explosives detonating in a burst of green flame and bone fragments.
The canyon colossus shrieked, a bass screech that ruptured stone strata. The torn neural bundle, shredded by Gavril's detonation, twitched violently while discharging sick-green arcs of galvanic energy. Now was the moment. Isken vaulted onto his resurrected dire-hound, its skeletal sockets burning emerald.
“Mireya! Fennic! Keep the King’s attention! I’m going for the core!” he bellowed, clinging to the hound's calcified mane. The beast, with a snarl that shook the cavern, began to scramble up the Marrow-King’s immense, trembling body, claws sinking into raw, fibrous meat. Its ascent was slow, arduous, against the resistance of the convulsing titan.
Isken held the encrypted drive, now fully unlocked, its data glowing with a soft, ethereal light. He reached the torn neural core, a festering wound within the colossal being. Galvanic discharge sparked against Isken's coat, filling his mouth with ozone and burning hair. He slammed the drive deep into the raw, shuddering synapse.
A deluge of compressed code poured from the drive into the neural knot. The Marrow-King spasmed, a death rattle reverberating through the entire abyss. The green glow from Isken’s army intensified, then wavered, reacting to the uploaded cure. The ground beneath them began to heave violently, not just from the King’s pain, but from something far more fundamental. The cavern walls, the very structure of the abyss, began to fissure, cracking apart with the sound of grinding teeth.
[“Core destabilization detected. Cure upload successful. Activation in T-minus 60 seconds. Warning: Cure deployment will reset all viral instances, including host connection to necromantic abilities. If you choose to deploy the cure, you will lose your powers. If you choose to override cure deployment, the Marrow-King will complete its assimilation of this entire canyon ward, resulting in total structural collapse. The choice is yours, Commander.”]
