Chapter 30 of 50
Chapter 30: Leo's Last Breath?
978 words
Gasping for air, Luna felt her lungs constrict. The nurse, a placid smile fixed on her face, had just emptied a critical vial of medication into the medical waste bin. Leo's medication. The one meant to stabilize him. Sabotage, active and undeniable, played out before her terrified eyes.
Her heart hammered against her ribs. Marcus wasn't just manipulating data; he was actively killing Leo.
Seconds later, a shrill alarm pierced the sterile silence of the ICU. Doctors and nurses sprinted past, their faces etched with urgency. Leo's room. The flashing red light confirmed her worst fear.
Pushing through the swinging doors, Luna’s gaze immediately found Leo. His skin, already pale, had taken on an ashen hue. Shallow, rattling breaths escaped his lips. The monitors above his bed screamed a dire warning: blood pressure dropping, heart rate erratic, oxygen saturation plummeting.
“What’s happening?” Luna choked out, grabbing a passing nurse’s arm. Her voice trembled.
“Rapid deterioration,” the nurse replied, her eyes wide with alarm. “He’s crashing.”
Desperate, Luna pulled out her phone, fingers fumbling as she dialed Elias. “He’s crashing, Elias! It’s Marcus. The nurse… she sabotaged his meds!”
“I’m on my way,” Elias’s voice, usually calm, was a razor-sharp command. “Don’t let them do anything drastic. Just hold on.”
Moments felt like an eternity. Medical staff buzzed around Leo’s bed, a flurry of panicked activity. One doctor, a man with a severe brow, barked orders. “Push atropine! Prepare for intubation!”
Suddenly, the ICU doors burst open. Elias, a dark storm of fury and determination, strode in. His eyes, usually cool and analytical, blazed with raw emotion. He took in the scene, the frantic doctors, the plummeting vitals, and Luna’s tear-streaked face, all in a single, scathing glance.
“Stop!” Elias’s voice cut through the chaos, a whip-crack that momentarily silenced the room. “Don’t touch him!”
Dr. Hayes, the severe-browed physician, turned, annoyance marring his face. “Dr. Thorne, this is an emergency. His vitals are crashing. We have to act.”
“You’re acting on manipulated data,” Elias retorted, his voice low but lethal. “This rapid decline isn’t a natural progression of his illness. It’s induced. I know what’s going on.”
“Induced?” Dr. Hayes scoffed. “Are you suggesting foul play in my ICU?”
Elias ignored the sarcasm. “Luna just witnessed one of your nurses tamper with his medication. Marcus Thorne wants Leo dead. And you’re all blindly following his manipulated protocol.”
His words hung heavy in the air. A ripple of whispers spread among the staff. They knew the tension between the brothers. They knew Marcus's influence.
“I’m taking over,” Elias declared, peeling off his jacket. He rolled up his sleeves, revealing muscular forearms. “This isn't a natural cardiac event. It’s a systemic shock from a critical drug omission. We need to stabilize him, not sedate him further.”
“This is highly irregular, Dr. Thorne,” Dr. Hayes protested, stepping forward. “You’re not authorized to….”
“I am his primary physician and his family,” Elias snarled, his eyes flashing. “And if you impede me, I will hold every single one of you personally responsible for his death. Now, stand aside.”
No one dared to argue further. Elias moved with swift, practiced precision. His hands, usually so gentle, were now firm, decisive. He scanned the monitors, his brow furrowed in concentration. He didn’t miss a single reading.
“Get me 200mg of amiodarone, now!” Elias commanded, his voice sharp. “And a 1mg dose of epinephrine. I want a central line in, stat. We’re pushing fluids and counteracting whatever poison Marcus put in his system by withholding the correct dosage.”
Nurses scrambled, galvanized by his authority and the sheer desperation in his eyes. Luna watched, her hands clasped to her mouth, tears streaming freely. Elias was a whirlwind, his focus absolute, his movements economical. He adjusted dials, checked lines, his fingers flying across the machinery.
“Vitals are still dropping!” A nurse cried out, her voice strained. “BP 60/40! Heart rate 180, irregular!”
Sweat beaded on Elias’s forehead. His jaw was clenched, a muscle twitching in his cheek. He worked with a frantic intensity, murmuring instructions, his gaze fixed on Leo’s pale face. Luna could see the fear, raw and unbridled, in her husband’s eyes, masked by a thin veneer of medical professionalism.
“Come on, Leo,” Elias whispered, his voice cracking slightly. “Fight, damn it. Fight.”
He administered another drug, his hand steady despite the tremor in his shoulders. The room was silent save for the frantic beeping of the machines and Elias’s urgent commands. Luna held her breath, her entire being focused on the thin line of hope, the flicker in Leo’s chest.
Seconds stretched into an eternity. The numbers on the monitor continued their grim descent. Leo’s chest barely rose. His lips turned blue.
Then, a sudden, horrifying sound. A long, agonizing flatline. The steady, rhythmic beeping vanished, replaced by a single, continuous tone. A flat line stretched across the screen, an undeniable declaration.
“No!” Luna shrieked, the sound tearing from her throat. “Leo!”
Elias immediately initiated CPR, his face a mask of agony. “Charge to 200! Clear!” he yelled, his voice hoarse. Doctors, jolted out of their stunned silence, moved to assist, their faces grim. The paddles slammed onto Leo’s chest, delivering a powerful jolt.
Leo’s body arched, but the line remained flat. The machine screamed its death knell. Another shock. Still nothing. The deafening silence of the room was broken only by the rhythmic thud of Elias’s compressions and the rising pitch of Luna’s raw, guttural screams.
“Leo! No! Don’t you dare!” Luna pleaded, her voice shredding, her world collapsing around her. The doctors worked with desperate, futile energy, but the monitor remained stubbornly, terrifyingly flat. She couldn't breathe. Her vision blurred with tears as the horrible truth began to set in. Leo was gone. She screamed his name until her throat was raw, but it was just a whisper lost in the void.
“Leo!”
