Chapter 45: The Trap is Sprung
826 words
A chill night air bit at Elara's exposed skin. She pulled her coat tighter, the fabric rustling softly. Her heart hammered against her ribs, a frantic drumbeat in the quiet alleyway.
Ahead, a nondescript door, barely visible in the dim glow of a distant streetlamp, marked her destination. Marcus's instructions had been precise. Harrison always chose obscure locations for his dirty work.
Pressing a hand to her chest, she felt the slight bulge of the miniature recorder. It was barely the size of her thumb, tucked securely into her bra strap. Caspian had insisted on a backup, a fail-safe in case things went south. He'd also insisted on a tracker, now active in her purse.
Swallowing hard, Elara pushed open the door. Inside, a narrow, unlit hallway stretched before her. The scent of stale dust and old paper hung heavy in the air. Each step echoed, amplified by the silence.
Rounding a corner, she saw a sliver of light beneath a closed door. This was it. Harrison’s meeting room. Her hand trembled as she reached for the knob.
Taking a deep breath, she pushed the door open. Harrison sat alone at a long, oak table, stacks of folders piled around him. His head snapped up, eyes narrowing as he recognized her.
"Elara? What are you doing here?" His voice was sharp, laced with irritation.
"Couldn't sleep," she replied, forcing a casual shrug. "Heard a rumor about an urgent late-night meeting. Thought I'd see what was so important it couldn't wait until morning."
Walking further into the room, she kept her gaze steady. She positioned herself across the table, ensuring the recorder had a clear line to his voice. The room felt cold, despite her racing pulse.
Harrison's lips thinned. "This is a private matter. Not for junior analysts." He made a dismissive gesture.
"Private? Or incriminating?" Elara countered, her voice dropping. She watched his face for any flicker of reaction. A muscle in his jaw twitched.
"What are you implying?" He leaned forward, his chair scraping against the floor.
"I'm implying that I know about the discrepancies. The 'missing' funds. The falsified reports," she stated, her gaze unwavering. This was the bait. She needed him to think she knew more than she did, but not everything.
Harrison scoffed, a forced, humorless sound. "Nonsense. You've been listening to rumors. Caspian is trying to discredit me."
"Caspian isn't the one scheduling midnight meetings to destroy evidence," Elara pressed. She watched his eyes. They widened almost imperceptibly.
Leaning back, Harrison steepled his fingers. "Evidence of what, precisely?" His tone was mockingly calm, but his knuckles were white.
"Evidence that you've been siphoning funds from the company for years. That you manipulated stock prices. That you tried to frame Marcus for your own crimes," Elara listed, each accusation a direct hit from Marcus's intel.
His composure cracked. "Marcus? That fool! He was always too loyal to Caspian. He tried to expose me once, but I crushed him."
That was it. The first slip. Elara felt a surge of adrenaline. "So, you admit it? You fabricated the charges against Marcus?"
Harrison's eyes darted around the room, as if checking for hidden listeners. "He deserved it. He was a nuisance. Always digging where he shouldn't."
"And the funds? The reports?" Elara pushed, her voice barely a whisper, urging him on.
"That's just good business! Everyone does it!" he exploded, his voice rising. "A little creative accounting, a few offshore accounts. It's how you stay ahead in this game. Caspian is too soft, too idealistic. He thinks he can run a global empire on 'integrity'."
He laughed, a bitter, grating sound. "I've been building my empire within his, piece by piece. When I finally exposed his 'negligence' with the new project, the board would have no choice but to replace him. And I, Elara, would have been the natural successor. I'd have taken everything."
"You planned to destroy Caspian's company from the inside," she clarified, her voice flat. He had given her everything.
"Exactly! And those *idiots* on the board are so focused on their own petty gains, they'd never see it coming until it was too late. I had them all in my pocket! They'd rubber-stamp anything I put in front of them, especially after Caspian was gone."
Harrison gestured to the piles of folders. "These? Just a few loose ends. Documents that could trace back to me. A simple fire, and they're gone. No one would ever know."
He stopped, his eyes fixed on Elara. A flicker of something. Not anger, not yet. Something else. Suspicion.
His gaze dropped, tracing the line of her coat, then her blouse. It landed on the subtle, almost imperceptible curve where the recorder lay hidden beneath her clothing.
His eyes widened. Fury contorted his features. He saw it. He knew.
A guttural roar tore from his throat. "You! You little BITCH!" Harrison lunged across the table, a predator unleashed, his hands reaching for her throat.
