Chapter 30: First Meeting, New Investigation

Slipping into Leo’s hospital room, Elara double-checked his IV drip. His small chest rose and fell evenly. A fragile peace settled over the room, a stark contrast to the storm brewing in her own heart. Her pulse thumped a frantic rhythm against her ribs. Kaelen Thorne was coming. He was due any minute. Nerves tightened her stomach into a hard knot. She smoothed Leo's hair, her fingers tracing the soft curls, a silent promise to protect him from everything, even his own father if necessary. A soft knock sounded at the door. Her breath caught. "Come in," she managed, her voice a little higher than usual. Stepping inside, Kaelen filled the doorway. He wore a dark, tailored suit, a stark contrast to the sterile white walls. His presence was immediate, commanding, yet his gaze immediately softened as it found Leo in the bed. He looked different. Less cold, perhaps. His usual sharp edges seemed slightly blunted by the setting, by the sight of his son. His eyes, the same piercing blue as Leo’s, held an unreadable depth as they swept over the boy. He didn't move towards the bed right away. He simply watched. Elara felt an inexplicable prickle of unease, a blend of fear and something akin to a reluctant curiosity. How would he react? What would he say? Slowly, Kaelen moved further into the room. Each step was measured, controlled. He stopped beside the bed, a respectful distance from Leo, and from Elara who stood on the other side. "He's... small," Kaelen murmured, his voice a low rumble. It wasn't an accusation, just an observation, laced with a vulnerability she hadn't expected. Leo stirred faintly, his eyelids fluttering. His small hand, free of the IV, twitched. Kaelen extended a hand, his fingers hovering above Leo’s arm. He hesitated, then gently, tentatively, laid his index finger on the back of Leo's hand. A jolt went through Elara. It was a simple touch, yet it felt monumental. This was the first physical contact between father and son. Leo didn't wake, but his fingers curled slightly, almost grasping Kaelen's. A flicker of something – surprise? Awe? – crossed Kaelen’s face. "He's been through a lot," Elara said, her voice quiet, a subtle warning woven into the words. "He's still recovering." Kaelen nodded, his gaze still fixed on Leo. "I know." He didn't elaborate. Minutes stretched into an eternity. Kaelen stood there, unmoving, just looking at his son. It was a silent vigil, heavy with unspoken emotions. Finally, he lifted his hand. His eyes met Elara's, intense and direct. "Thank you for letting me see him." Her chin lifted slightly. "He's my son, Kaelen. This is his hospital room." She kept her tone even, refusing to concede any ground. A faint line appeared between Kaelen's brows. "I understand. Our discussions will continue, Elara." He didn't press. Not now. He simply gave Leo one last, lingering look, a complex expression on his face that Elara couldn't quite decipher. Turning, Kaelen walked towards the door. His shoulders, broad and powerful, seemed to carry a weight she hadn't noticed before. He paused at the threshold, glancing back at them. "I'll be in touch," he said, his voice firm, leaving no room for doubt. Then he was gone. A sigh escaped Elara's lips, one she hadn't realized she was holding. Her shoulders slumped slightly. The air in the room seemed to lighten, the oppressive tension easing its grip. She moved closer to Leo, brushing a kiss against his forehead. "It's okay, sweetheart," she whispered. "Mommy's here." Relief washed over her, then receded, replaced by a fresh wave of apprehension. This was just the beginning. Kaelen's quiet intensity spoke volumes. His control, his measured movements, confirmed his resolve. Pulling out her phone, Elara checked her messages. A new email notification glowed on the screen, from an unfamiliar sender. Her brow furrowed. It was titled "Case Update - Thorne v. Carmichael." Tapping it open, she felt a chill creep up her spine. The message was concise, official. "Dear Ms. Carmichael, Please be advised that pursuant to the ongoing proceedings, a comprehensive and intensive background investigation into your personal and professional history has officially commenced as of today's date." Her blood ran cold. *Investigation*. Kaelen hadn't wasted a second. His visit to Leo, seemingly subdued, was merely a precursor. While he was here, observing his son, his legal team had been hard at work, pulling the trigger on the very threat Arthur Finch had issued. They were digging. Into everything. Her past, her finances, her relationships, her family history. Every corner of her life would be scrutinized. Panic, cold and sharp, pierced through her. This wasn't just about custody anymore. This was about finding leverage, about dissecting her life to paint her as unsuitable, as someone who couldn't provide the "suitable residence" or environment Kaelen demanded. Her fingers trembled as she reread the email. The formal language, the stark pronouncement, sent a wave of dread through her. What would they find? What could they twist? Every secret, every vulnerability she had ever tried to bury, felt exposed and raw. She thought of her years struggling, the small compromises she'd made to survive, to keep Leo safe and fed. A sudden, fierce protectiveness surged through her. This was Kaelen's move, a calculated, aggressive strike. He wasn't playing fair, he was playing to win, and she was the target. She would not let him take Leo. Not without a fight. Her jaw tightened, a steely resolve replacing the fear. This investigation might be designed to intimidate, but it only fueled her determination. Leo stirred again, a soft whimper escaping his lips. Elara quickly tucked her phone away, forcing a calm smile onto her face. "It's alright, baby," she whispered, stroking his cheek. "Everything's going to be alright." But deep down, she knew that was a lie. Nothing was going to be alright. Not anymore. This was war.
