Chapter 26: Fury and Betrayal
857 words
Shattered. The single word echoed in Kaelen's mind, a hammer blow against his skull. He stared at the printout in his hand, the stark white paper trembling slightly. Leo Thorne. Son of Kaelen Thorne. The truth, cold and unyielding, ripped through him.
His vision blurred. The sterile hospital corridor spun. Doctors and nurses moved past, their voices a distant hum. None of it registered.
Betrayal clawed at his throat. A raw, burning sensation. Elara. All this time. She had known.
A son. *His* son.
Waves of emotions crashed over him. Shock, so profound it left him breathless. An unbearable ache for the years lost, the moments stolen. But beneath it all, a raging, inferno-hot fury.
How could she? How could she keep this from him?
He crumpled the paper in his fist, the sharp edges digging into his palm. The physical pain was a dull throb compared to the agony in his chest.
Moving on instinct, Kaelen strode towards the elevators. His jaw was clenched so tight his teeth ached. Every muscle in his body felt coiled, ready to strike.
He needed answers. He needed to see her face. He needed to understand the depth of her deception.
Stepping into the private patient wing, he found her room easily. Nurses at the desk glanced up, their expressions concerned. He ignored them.
Pushing the door open, Kaelen entered without knocking. The soft click of the latch echoed in the quiet room.
Elara sat by Leo’s bedside, her hand gently stroking his hair. She looked exhausted, her eyes red-rimmed, a faint bruise blooming on her temple. Her head snapped up at the sound.
Her breath hitched. Her eyes, wide and startled, met his. A flicker of something – fear? Guilt? – crossed her features.
“Kaelen?” Her voice was a fragile whisper, laced with surprise.
His gaze swept from her face to the sleeping child in the bed. Leo. His son. A tremor ran through Kaelen. He swallowed hard, forcing his voice to remain level, dangerously low.
“We need to talk.”
Elara’s eyes darted nervously to Leo, then back to Kaelen. She slowly rose from the chair, her movements stiff. She seemed to shrink under his intense scrutiny.
“What… what is it?” she asked, her voice barely audible. She knew. He could see it in the way she avoided his gaze, in the sudden tension that gripped her shoulders.
Stepping further into the room, Kaelen closed the door behind him. The sound was unnervingly final. He stopped just a few feet from her, his presence dominating the small space.
“Don’t play innocent with me, Elara.” His voice was a low growl, each word carefully articulated. “Not now. Not after everything.”
Her face paled. “I don’t understand,” she lied, a desperate plea in her eyes. Her hands twisted together, a tell-tale sign of her distress.
“Really?” He took another step, closing the distance between them. “Because I just received the results of a DNA test. Leo Thorne. Son of Kaelen Thorne.”
Silence descended, heavy and suffocating. Elara froze, her breath caught in her throat. Her eyes were wide, glistening with unshed tears.
“Kaelen, please,” she began, her voice cracking. “It’s not… it’s complicated.”
“Complicated?” He scoffed, the sound devoid of humor. “You call this ‘complicated’? You kept my son from me for five years, Elara. Five years!”
His voice, though still low, vibrated with a barely contained rage. His hands clenched and unclenched at his sides, fighting the urge to shake her, to demand an explanation with more than just words.
“I had my reasons,” she whispered, her chin trembling. Her eyes finally met his, filled with a desperate, pleading look.
“Reasons?” Kaelen’s lips thinned into a hard line. “What possible reason could justify this? You let me believe he was Thorne’s son. You let me walk away from him, from *my* child.”
The injustice of it all burned hotter, consuming him. Every interaction with Leo, every moment he’d dismissed the boy’s striking resemblance, twisted in his gut.
He remembered Leo’s shy smiles, his bright, curious eyes, eyes that were now undeniably *his*.
“I was protecting him,” Elara insisted, a tear finally escaping and tracing a path down her cheek. “Protecting both of you.”
“Protecting us from what?” His voice rose, a dangerous edge creeping in. “From the truth? From *my* right to know I have a son?”
He advanced, forcing her to retreat until her back hit the cool, sterile wall. Her eyes were wide with fear, reflecting the storm in his.
Kaelen braced his hands on the wall beside her head, effectively caging her. His face was inches from hers, his breath ragged.
“How dare you keep my son from me?”
