Chapter 37: A New Enemy Rises

A calculating smile stretched across Dominic Shaw’s face.
He watched the city lights twinkle from his penthouse office, a glass of amber liquid swirling in his hand. Apex Pharma, his empire, always sought the next breakthrough. Julian Vance’s 'miracle cure' for Leo Vance represented a direct threat.
Such a unique case. Such a vulnerable target. Shaw saw opportunity where others saw hope.
“Everything is ready?” he asked, not turning from the panoramic view.
A hushed voice replied from behind him. “The digital package is set for release, Mr. Shaw. Targeting key news outlets and social media influencers.”
Shaw hummed, a low, satisfied sound. “Ensure it paints a clear picture. Reckless experimentation. Unethical practices. A desperate gamble with a child’s life.”
His gaze sharpened. “And make sure the connection to the Vance Foundation is undeniable. Their ‘philanthropy’ will look like a facade for dangerous, unproven science.”
The aide nodded, a shadow against the vast window. “Consider it done.”
Minutes later, the first encrypted files began their silent journey across the internet. They contained heavily redacted documents, out-of-context quotes from medical reports, and grainy, distorted images of Leo in the early stages of his treatment.
Elara stared at the forensic report, the weight of Marcus Thorne’s betrayal pressing down on her. Julian sat opposite, his face etched with a familiar pain, but also a new resolve.
“I know this doesn’t undo anything, Elara,” Julian said, his voice soft. “But I hope it shows you I’m not running from the truth anymore.”
Her fingers traced the damning figures. Solara Corp’s downfall. Her family’s ruin. All orchestrated. Her initial rage had dulled, replaced by a hollow ache.
Trusting him felt impossible. Yet, the evidence was irrefutable. His apology, raw and unsought, resonated somewhere deep inside her.
Before she could fully process the swirling emotions, her phone vibrated. A notification from a news alert service.
Julian’s phone buzzed almost simultaneously. A headline flashed across his screen, a grotesque caricature of his efforts.
“‘Miracle Child or Medical Guinea Pig? Vance Foundation Under Fire for Unorthodox Treatment’,” Elara read aloud, her voice tightening.
A chill snaked down her spine. The accompanying article was a venomous attack. It twisted Leo’s rare condition into a monstrous anomaly, painting the experimental gene therapy as a dangerous, untested gamble.
Julian snatched his phone, his eyes scanning the aggressive language. His jaw clenched, a muscle twitching near his temple. “This… this is insane.”
News channels erupted. Breaking stories flashed across every screen. The narrative, carefully crafted by Shaw’s team, spread like wildfire.
One segment showed a frantic expert, whose face Elara vaguely recognized from medical conferences, gravely discussing the ‘unforeseen long-term effects’ of gene manipulation.
Another interview featured a tearful, anonymous 'former insider' from the Vance Foundation, claiming they had raised concerns about the lack of conventional oversight.
“They’re calling it a ‘human experiment’,” Julian muttered, disbelief warring with rising fury.
The articles implied that Julian, driven by guilt and a messianic complex, was using his foundation’s resources to fund a reckless procedure on his own son, endangering not only Leo but potentially setting a dangerous precedent.
Elara’s heart hammered. She scrolled through comments sections, the vitriol making her stomach churn. People called for investigations, for the foundation to be shut down, for Julian to be held accountable.
Suddenly, Julian’s phone rang again. It was Dr. Aris, Leo’s lead physician, his voice tight with urgency.
“Julian, have you seen the news?” Aris asked, his tone strained. “Our board members are panicking. The public outcry is immense. They’re… they’re talking about suspending the treatment. Effective immediately.”
Julian’s knuckles went white, his grip on the phone tightening. “Suspending? They can’t. Leo needs this. This is deliberate sabotage.”
Elara watched his face drain of color. The fragile hope that had just begun to form within her shattered. The world seemed to collapse around them, once again threatening the one innocent life they both desperately wanted to protect.
This wasn't just a smear campaign. This was a direct assault on Leo’s future, orchestrated with chilling precision.
