Chapter 26: Fury's Aftermath

863 words

Blinding fury propelled Julian forward. He slammed the car door shut, the sound echoing ominously in the deserted street. Each step thudded, heavy and deliberate, across the cracked pavement leading to Elara's building. Knocking barely registered before he was turning the handle, finding it unlocked. His eyes, burning with a cold fire, swept the small, cluttered living room. Elara stood by the window, a cup clutched in her hands. She turned, startled, her expression shifting from mild surprise to utter shock at the sight of him. Her lips parted, but no sound came out. Julian stalked into the apartment, the air crackling with his suppressed rage. He stopped mere feet from her, his presence a suffocating weight. His jaw was clenched so tight the muscles pulsed. "You lied to me," he ground out, his voice a low, dangerous rumble. "Every single word was a calculated deception." Her eyes widened, a flicker of understanding, then terror, taking root. She shook her head slowly, the teacup rattling in her trembling hands. "Julian, I don't—" He cut her off, a sharp, dismissive sound escaping his throat. "Don't play innocent. Not now. Not when I know everything." From his inner jacket pocket, he pulled a thick envelope. He held it up, letting the anonymous package's contents spill onto the small coffee table between them. Photocopies of documents. Bank statements. Corporate records. A faded photograph of a small bakery sign, 'The Golden Crumb'. Elara's face, younger, beaming beside an older couple. Elara swayed, her gaze fixed on the scattered papers. The color drained from her face, leaving her ghost-pale. Her breath hitched, a cold knot tightening in her stomach. "Vance Corporation," Julian continued, his voice laced with venom. "My father's company. My company. The one that systematically destroyed your family's livelihood. The one that caused your bakery to fail." He watched her, unflinching, as her world crumbled before her eyes. The accusation hung heavy, suffocating her. Her hands flew to her mouth, stifling a sob. "You knew," he accused, stepping closer. "All this time, you knew who I was. You knew what my family did to yours. And you still came to me. You still let me help Leo, pretending to be some innocent stranger." "No," she whispered, tears welling in her eyes. "No, Julian, it wasn't like that. I didn't know you were *that* Julian Vance, not at first. Not until..." His voice, a low growl, cut through her fragile defense. "Not until it was convenient? Not until you had a foot in the door? You saw an opportunity, didn't you? A way to get close, to exact some kind of revenge." "Revenge?" she choked out, her voice breaking. "My family lost everything. My parents... they never recovered. What could I possibly gain from revenge against you?" "Access!" he roared, finally letting his rage fully erupt. "A chance to ruin my name, to expose my family, just like you believed we ruined yours!" His fists clenched at his sides, knuckles white. Elara flinched back, her eyes wide and overflowing. "That's not true! I never thought of that! I swear!" Tears pricked at his own eyes, not from sorrow, but from a burning sense of betrayal. He felt like a fool, utterly exposed, his generosity twisted into a weapon against him. "You manipulated me," he stated, his voice now dangerously calm. "You used Leo's illness, my guilt, my desire to do something good, all to serve your own agenda." "Leo," she choked out, the name a desperate plea. "This has nothing to do with Leo. He's innocent in all of this. He needs help. He needs the treatment." He saw her pain, her raw anguish, but it did nothing to quell the firestorm inside him. It only fueled it further, seeing her as the ultimate actress, weaving a web of lies. "You think this is some kind of game?" He leaned in close, his shadow falling over her. "You think you can play me, and there will be no consequences?" Her knees threatened to give out. She clutched the edge of the coffee table, her knuckles white. "Please, Julian. Don't do this. Not to Leo. He's a child. He deserves a chance." "A chance?" he scoffed, pulling back. "You had your chance, Elara. You had every opportunity to be honest with me. But you chose to deceive. You chose to hide." Cold, hard eyes fixed on her. "And now, you will face the consequences of your choices." He took a deep, steadying breath, the fury settling into a chilling resolve. "I'm done," he stated, his voice flat, devoid of all emotion. "Done with your lies, done with your manipulations. And I'm done with Leo Vance." Her heart stopped. "What do you mean?" "The treatment," he clarified, each word a shard of ice. "All support. All funding. Revoked. Effective immediately. You're on your own, Elara." The silence that followed was absolute, cold and desolate, punctuated only by the ragged sound of Elara's breathing. Her world, for the second time, had been irrevocably shattered.
