Chapter 36: Cracks in the Control

907 words

Panic flared, sharp and cold, through Anya’s veins. Her fingers brushed the jagged lines on the workbench, the freshly carved letters standing out stark against the worn wood. LILY. A primal scream caught in her throat. This wasn't a warning for her. This was a direct assault, a violation aimed at her sister, a threat that sliced through her heart with icy precision. Viktor hadn't just reached Elias. He'd reached into Anya's most vulnerable place. Frantically, her gaze darted around the studio. Nothing else seemed disturbed. Just the name. A chilling, personal declaration of war. Her phone felt like a block of ice in her trembling hand as she dialed Elias. His name flashed on the screen, a tiny flicker of hope in a sudden, engulfing darkness. He answered on the second ring, his voice terse, controlled. "Anya. What is it?" "He... he knows about Lily," she choked out, her voice barely a whisper. "He carved her name. On my workbench." A beat of silence stretched, taut and suffocating. A low, guttural sound escaped Elias’s lips, something she’d never heard from him before. It was raw, edged with something akin to animalistic fury. "Stay there," he commanded, his voice now a low growl. "Don't touch anything. Don't move. I'm coming." The line went dead. Minutes later, the heavy thud of his boots echoed up the stairs. He burst into the studio, his usually impeccable appearance ruffled, a dark storm brewing in his eyes. His gaze swept the room, landing instantly on the workbench, then on her. She watched him. His jaw clenched, a muscle twitching near his temple. His hands, usually so steady, were balled into fists at his sides, knuckles white. Approaching the workbench, he didn't touch it. He simply stared, his profile a rigid mask. But Anya could feel the tremor of rage emanating from him. "This is a direct message," he stated, his voice tight, barely audible. "He's gone too far." Turning, he gripped her shoulders, his gaze searching hers, intense and burning. "Are you hurt? Did anyone see anything?" "No, I... I don't think so. I just got back. It was like this when I opened the door." His eyes narrowed, scanning her face as if checking for invisible wounds. She saw fear there, a flash of it quickly veiled by his usual steel. "Viktor always plays dirty," Elias muttered, releasing her to pace the small space. "But this... this crosses every line." He ran a hand through his dark hair, a rare sign of distress. Elias was usually a fortress of calm, a man who never showed weakness, never let his control slip. Now, cracks were forming. "What does he want?" Anya asked, her voice still shaky. "Why Lily?" Stopping abruptly, Elias turned. His eyes were like chips of obsidian. "He wants to hurt me. He knows you're my vulnerability. And he's found a new way to exploit it." Anya felt a jolt. *My vulnerability.* The words hung in the air, heavy with unspoken meaning. Elias had never admitted to such a thing before. "We need to get Lily somewhere safe," she insisted. "Today. What if he... what if he goes after her directly?" "He won't," Elias said, his voice flat, but the assurance felt forced. "Not yet. This is a warning. A show of power. He wants to see me sweat." "But you are sweating," she retorted, gesturing vaguely. "You're losing it, Elias." His gaze snapped to hers, sharp and dangerous. "I am perfectly in control, Anya." His words contradicted the tautness in his shoulders, the barely perceptible tremor in his hands, the way his eyes kept flicking back to the carved name. "What's the plan?" she pressed, needing action, needing to feel less helpless. "We can't just wait for his next move." "We retaliate," he said, his voice hard. "We hit him where it hurts. And we ensure you and Lily are protected." He walked over to a small side table where she kept a glass of water, remnants of her painting session. His hand reached out, his movements precise, yet a tension hummed around him. He picked up the glass. His fingers tightened around it, not gently, but with a sudden, overwhelming force. Suddenly, the glass shattered. A sharp, violent crack echoed through the studio. Shards of crystal flew, scattering across the wooden floor, catching the light like scattered diamonds. Elias stood frozen, his hand still clenched, droplets of water clinging to his skin, a tiny bead of blood welling on his palm where a sliver of glass had pricked him. His breath hitched. The rigid mask had slipped. For a split second, she saw it – pure, unadulterated fear, followed by a surge of raw, untamed fury. His control, usually absolute, had completely fractured. Staring at the broken glass, then at Elias’s exposed face, Anya felt a profound shift within her. She had seen him angry, seen him calculating. But this was different. This was him, truly undone. He wasn't just protective. He was terrified. Terrified for her, for Lily. And in that shattering moment, she understood the depth of the hold she had come to have on him. She had broken through his walls, irrevocably, profoundly.
