Chapter 30: An Uninvited Guest
907 words
Heart pounding, Anya stared at the faded newspaper article on her laptop screen. Silas Thorne. Spokesperson. The words clawed at her, a chilling echo in the quiet penthouse. How could he have been so closely involved? His calm demeanor, the polite questions, it all felt like a carefully constructed lie now.
A cold dread settled deep in her stomach. Every interaction with Elias suddenly took on a new, darker meaning. Was Silas truly a distant relative, or something more? The official story of the Thorne family tragedy was unraveling before her eyes.
Suddenly, a sharp chime cut through the silence of the apartment. The doorbell.
Elias, who had been engrossed in a late-night call on the terrace, stiffened. He moved with a swift, almost predatory grace, his eyes narrowing as he glanced at the door panel. His jaw clenched.
"Were you expecting someone?" Anya asked, her voice barely a whisper. The unexpected visitor felt like a personal intrusion, a disruption to her clandestine investigation.
"No," Elias murmured, his gaze fixed on the screen displaying a blurred image of the person outside. A muscle twitched in his cheek. He looked undeniably tense, a stark contrast to his usual composed self.
He moved towards the door, pausing for a moment, as if gathering himself. The air in the penthouse crackled with unspoken tension. Anya watched him, her heart hammering against her ribs.
Unlocking the door, Elias pulled it open just enough to reveal a sliver of the hallway. A man stood there, tall and impeccably dressed, a sleek briefcase clutched in one hand. His dark suit was sharp, his silver hair swept back from a patrician forehead.
"Elias," the man's voice was smooth, almost oily. A hint of an old world accent clung to his words. "What a pleasant surprise to find you still up."
Elias forced a tight smile. "Julian. To what do I owe this... unexpected visit?"
Anya's breath hitched. Julian. This had to be the former business partner she'd heard fleeting mentions of, the one Elias never spoke about directly. Her senses went on high alert.
Julian Vance pushed the door open further, stepping inside without waiting for a full invitation. His eyes, the color of gunmetal, swept over Elias, then landed on Anya, lingering for a fraction too long.
"And who is this charming creature?" Julian’s smile didn't quite reach his eyes. They remained cold, assessing, like a predator sizing up its prey.
"Anya," Elias said, his tone clipped. "She's my assistant."
Julian raised a perfectly sculpted eyebrow. "Assistant, eh? You always did have an eye for talent, Elias. Or perhaps, for... distractions."
Anya felt a prickle of unease. His words were innocuous enough, yet the way he delivered them, the subtle intonation, suggested layers of meaning she couldn't quite decipher. Elias shifted, a barely perceptible movement, but it spoke volumes.
"Julian, I'm quite busy," Elias stated, his voice now edged with steel. "If this is about the usual…"
Julian chuckled, a low, rumbling sound. "Always to the point, aren't we? Some things never change. I simply happened to be in the city, and felt it was high time we reconnected. For old times' sake."
His gaze drifted around the opulent living room, taking in every detail. Anya felt a strange sense of violation, as if he was cataloging every piece of Elias's life.
"I heard a rumor you were making waves again in the market," Julian continued, turning his attention back to Elias. "Aggressive, as ever. Some might say reckless. But then, you always did play close to the edge, didn't you? Even back then."
The veiled reference to the past hung heavy in the air. Anya's mind raced, connecting this man to the discrepancies she'd uncovered, to Silas Thorne. What did Julian know? What part did he play?
Elias's knuckles were white as he clenched his hands at his sides. He was fighting to maintain his composure, but Anya could see the raw tension radiating from him. Julian Vance had clearly struck a nerve.
"My business is my own, Julian," Elias replied, his voice a low growl. "And it certainly doesn't concern you anymore."
"Oh, but it always concerns me, dear Elias," Julian purred. He took a step closer, invading Elias's personal space. "We were quite the team, once. Until... circumstances intervened. A great pity, really. All that potential, wasted."
He paused, letting his words hang in the air, a silent accusation. Then, his eyes flickered back to Anya, a knowing smirk playing on his lips. It was a look that made her skin crawl.
"Perhaps we could discuss this over a drink sometime soon," Julian suggested, his tone deceptively casual. "I'm sure we have much to catch up on. Old friends, after all."
His gaze, however, was anything but friendly. It held a calculating glint, assessing not just Elias, but the entire situation, including Anya's presence. A shiver ran down Anya's spine. The arrival of Elias's former business partner sent a wave of profound unease through the room, making Anya question his true intentions, and what exactly he wanted from Elias now.
